Re: Prime Tyson v prime Tua
Can't agree that he's all wrong for Frazier- don't get me wrong, I think Tyson is the pick, but if he survives the early onslaught Joe was a way better inside fighter than Mike, and given that neither boxes off the back foot , this fight in going to be fought at close range. To quote Holyfield again, Mike was so used to having the space in front of him as mot of his opponents moved back away, but you step to him and climbed that space he didn't like it- If Thomas can have success fighting Mike up close, the so can Joe. And I'd take Holy's complimentary comments with a pinch of salt-. The truth was that even in his prime his head movement dropped off during the course of his longer fights. But even that taken into account he still starts as good as even money or better against everyone except Ali.

Frazier couldn't fight going backwards.......Tyson was 218 of solid muscle, stronger and force.....He was quicker too with a better defence...
As with Louis-Tyson I can't see how Frazier plants his feet !!.....
Obviously he'd have a punchers chance............Like you couldn't rule out Bruno, Sanders or Carnera against Tyson....
Foreman is the only pressure fighter in heavy history for me with a chance against Mike......Because he was big enough to stand his ground..
But it's opinions and I thought Biggs would beat Tyson.......30 years ago and my brother still takes the p**s everytime we talk on the phone..
As with Louis-Tyson I can't see how Frazier plants his feet !!.....

Yes you could....twice. Frank didn't have the reflexes or hand speed to make his big punches count against Tyson. The shot he wobbled Mike with in their first fight was one he started throwing about three fights earlier and Mike just happened to be in the way when it arrived.TRUSSMAN66 wrote:Frazier couldn't fight going backwards.......Tyson was 218 of solid muscle, stronger and force.....He was quicker too with a better defence...

The only thing for sure is that Tyson's the most over-hyped fighter in history. When he wasn't bullying hand picked tomato cans he got beat.

Do you really believe that mate? Or are you on the wind up?
Tyson beat some quality operaters in the 80's. He just made them look bad because he was that good himself.

I do honestly believe he is the most over hyped fighter in history. Is it even debatable?
For the 'best HW ever' he didn't really have a single great win.. Foreman, Holyfield, Tua....basically any fighter he couldn't bully would have had a great chance.

Spent years in prison before he fought Holyfield. I think he would of beat him if they had of fought before he was convicted.
Foreman has a good chance of beating Tyson but I wouldn't rule Mike out.
You can definitely make an argument for Big George and Evander but I really doubt Tua could beat Mike.

Obviously in general the 3 of them are much better than Tua, but if there's one HW that's not going to take a backward step it's Tua, and if Tyson gets pushed backwards he loses. It would be a hooking contest in the middle of the ring which with Tua's strength power and chin would be suicide for Mike. Tua could be out-boxed easily, but Tyson wasn't the guy to do it.

Re: Prime Tyson v prime Tua
Tyson had great lateral movement, was great at switching from body to head. He threw crisp punches from awkward angles.
How often did Tyson fight a fighter his size?
I might be wrong but I think Tyson had more than enough skill to beat a fighter of Tua's caliber.

Just because Tua wasn't stopped, doesn't mean Tyson couldn't out point him.
I say a Rooney trained Tyson could use good movement when necessary.
I think you really are looking at too many of his losses. Buster Douglas fought a great fight and was 6'4 with a fantastic reach. He used a very effective jab to keep Tyson off balance.
This is the real blue print to beat Mike.
Evander used a different strategy but Tyson wasn't the same boxer anymore. I understand Evander was older but Tyson lost something and he could hardly be the same after prison. It wasn't like he was staying in shape or sharpening his skills in prison.

Because Tua's considerably stronger and tougher than Tyson. Tua could probably take Tyson's best, I doubt the reverse is true.

Could Tyson do 12 rounds under constant pressure? I think if Rooney was still trainer, much like the Foreman fight, it wouldn't have happened.

Tua was relentless but Tyson wasn't that easy to hit clean in the early days.
It Is probably why everyone mentions the time Frank stumbled him. It was not common to see Tyson hurt.

I'd agree there, but he was difficult to hit for four rounds or five rounds then he stopped his head movement as it slowed him down. Tyson is stronger in midrange and may have to play it on the back foot. He's shown that he's capable of it before so its likely he takes Tua by points. However I reckon he takes some sort of a beating with it despite winning

Is Tyson the best four round fighter in history? He must be a candidate because I do agree he was definitely more ferocious in the early going.
Tua definitely can hurt him, no doubt. Still can't see Tyson losing but wtf I've been wrong loads.

He only ever had three fights that went the twelve round distance so you're talking a very small pool of fights whilst every time he lost was within schedule.

Only time he folded late was Douglas pre-incarceration and some people think he beat douglas in 8...

Douglas was fascinating that night. Used to hate watching that fight because I loved Tyson as a kid.

Tua was outboxed by virutally any heavyweight he faced that had any reasonable boxing ability. Tyson would have been easily able to outbox him.

Only Lewis, and to a certain extent Byrd, out-boxed Tua. They were both excellent technicians who boxed off the back foot for virtually the entire fight. Maybe Tyson could box well going backwards but I never saw any evidence of it, ever. For me Tua bulldozes Tyson back and breaks his heart.

Re: Prime Tyson v prime Tua
Tyson can box. He has a variety of punches and good movement.
Why would a short Mike Tyson box on the backfoot against taller fighters? Tua is sams size. Perhaps he could box backwards if required. Anyway he doesn't need to box moving back to beat Tua.
He could do what Pacquiao does. Stay in the pocket with Tua, unleash combos, then move and attack at different angles. He has a couple of inches reach advantage and is far quicker.
I doubt Mike at his peak would attack head on. To be honest If Tua walked onto a couple of tysons full power counters, he would be floored. I think the fact that Tyson doesn't have to punch upwards, would help him generate more power in his over hand right.

Tyson could have boxed rings around Tua. How many times did he need come from behind knockouts to beat mediocre heavyweights like Tua did? He was leagues ahead of Tua.

Normally when a thread gets nearly 100 responses it's because you're all falling out and generally insulting each other. I check in on this one and discover it is because some people are actually treating a debate about whether David Tua could beat Mike Tyson seriously!
My only surprise should be my ability to be surprised by things on here.
