WHAT IS THE BEST COMBINATION OF FILM, ALBUM & AUTHOR?
Culture Cup 2.0 Final Round Extravaganza
First topic message reminder :
Round 6 is all over and this takes us to the end of the regular season. We now enter the realms of the ‘Double Point Extravaganza Final Round’. Excited? Me too.
So how did round 6 end up? The big winner was a small man. You dancing? You asking? Yes we are, dancingweeman, yes we are. A maximum points haul for the weeman with Moneyball by Michael Lewis. I’ve never read it but if it’s half as good as Liar’s Poker then it’s probably a worthy winner. Fat Head Adam scooped up a solid 8 points for Fever Pitch which caused some angst amongst many posters, particularly SerialDAVE who wrote a poetically angry post besmirching the book and anyone who voted for it. I’ve never read it but at least 8 people picked it either as a top choice or one of their reserves.Elton John Seany picked up 6 points for Tyler Hamilton’s effort which, by most accounts, is a decent book. Our reigning champ Hero kept up his consistency with 5 points for The Damned Utd. Jeff and John Gordon Sinclair superfly both picked up 4 points apiece which means ‘Fly keeps his slender 1 point lead over his great rival. A role reversal of when they play sword fights in the showers as Jeff normally edges that battle. A whole host of posters picked up a big fat zero: Harrier, Shah Abu-bakr, Stella (justice for Definitely Maybe performing so well last time out), Nakatomi, SerialDAVE, Jules, Union, Dagless and (again) G-Unit. Don’t worry chaps, I’m sure that’s more a reflection on the uncultured people of 606v2 than anything else. Better luck next time. The league table is updated but with double points on offer for the last round, it could all change.
Here is the updated league table:
1) Hero 35 pts
2) Paul 33 pts
3) Trebs 32 pts
4) Fat Head Adam 29 pts
5) C&R 28 pts
6) The Boss 28 pts
7) Ziggler 26 pts
8) weeman 26 pts
9) GrumpyG*lfer 25 pts
10) Michaels 22 pts
11) Harrier 19 pts
12) Beadle 19 pts
13) Azzy 18 pts
14) superfly 13 pts
15) Stella 12 pts
16) Shah Abu-bakr 12 pts
17) Jeff 12 pts
18) Nakatomi 11 pts
19) SerialDAVE 9 pts
20) Jules 8 pts
21) Union Cane 7 pts
22) Dagless 7 pts
23) Ray Mears big fat zero pts
Round 7 is the final round so please vote for the BEST COMBINATION OF FILM, ALBUM & AUTHOR? Don’t get carried away by one part of a choice. Go for the combination of the three.
Remember, IT’S OPEN FOR ALL OF 606v2 TO VOTE.
Thanks.

Re: Culture Cup 2.0 Final Round Extravaganza
This one was really hard. Lots of options where I could support two of the three. In the end I went for: The Godfather/ The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill – Lauryn Hill/Alexander Dumas. Lauryn Hill's album is brilliant, but not the greatest of all time.
I'm just shocked by the number of people who have gone for Roald Dahl as the greatest author of all time. Greatest children's author, undoubtedly, and his short stories are wickedly funny. But as much as I love his work, surely anyone with a reading age greater than 10 must have an author they prefer.

Actually, kudos to whoever nominated Lauryn Hill. I've just been listening to it on Spotify and I'd forgotten just how good it is. Can't believe she hasn't released a proper album since.

I'd say there's a lot more skill in the works of Dahl than there are in any other author on this list. Most of those listed are there for one or two hits, whereas Dahl has produced countless classics that defy the shifts in generational traits to remain beloved children's books regardless of the times.
With the BFG about to get a huge film adaptation (directed by Spielberg and co-produced by Disney and Dreamworks amongst others) I think Dahl will get another resurgence soon. And he will consistently get those as his books are so perfect for film and stage adaptation.

If they made "the Magic Faraway Tree" into a film you could shove Dahl up your hole

Humour, yes. Imagination, probably. Skill, I'm not so sure.
And I'm not sure it's fair to say that Dahl's work has defied generational shifts when compared with a list that includes Dostoyevsky, Dickens, Dumas.
Anyway, I'm probably just being a snob. Like I say, I think he's a great author. I'm just surprised that he would have so many nominations over adult authors.

Cure also a fantastic group, after that it goes a bit leftfield, which ironically is a shame as Leftfield were better than the two rather odd choices you gave.

I have actually voted for you this round Dave, Reign in Blood is the best album on here aside from my one which will get no voted despite musically sh1tting on every other band mentioned. Who the hell votes for the Smiths instead of Cream, Johnny Marr and Morrissey aren't fit to wipe Claptons arse for him.
Ahhh so you've read about Melechesh without listening to them, black metal they definitely are not despite their rather absurd self description as being 'Sumerian Black thrashing Metal'. A hybrid of thrash and death they might well be but they lack the obvious Satan worshipping lyrics and murdering to be asscociated with Black Metal.
I might vote for Taylor Swift now but Cool Hand Luke is the greatest of great anti-establishment films.

... Sergeant Pepper's isn't even the best Beatles album (Rubber Soul if you must ask) and Tolkien should be dismissed entirely because of the Tom Bombadil section in Lord of the Rings and also because of the endless bloody songs littered throughout the book.

Quite a difficult topic on which to vote as I haven't read/heard quite a few so I concocted a devilishly clever ratings system. Turns out my favourite combination is True Romance/London Calling/Dickens. I hope it's not superfly's choice.

Nope, downloaded their discography, had it on in the car this week and VERY quickly dismissed the bloody lot. Irrespective of their lyrical content they are musical closer to black metal than death or thrash in my view. Will stick to NILE and MAAT thank you. Melechesh...not for me I'm afraid.Hammersmith harrier wrote:DAVE667 wrote:Just listened to the new SLAYER single...excellent. Well, Rob Halford from JUDAS PRIEST wouldn't argue with you on that one...would also suggest David Drayman from DISTURBED (p!ss awful nu-metal band who won't f*ck off and die) could be of that persuasion. Genuinely don't know how many gay men are in metal bands, Sean but am pleased you're taking such a keen interest.
