THE BEST EVER DEBUT ALBUM
Culture Cup 2.0 round 5
Round 4 of the Culture Cup 2.0 comes to an end and thank the heavens for that. As is standard for 2.0, there were some beauties and some utter sh*te picked in this round. The big winner was The Boss who (after he had put down his Niall Quinn autobiography and chosen his film) picked up maximum points for One Flew Over The Cuckoos Nest. It’s a quality film so no complaints from me. Trebs scooped up a healthy 8 points for Silence Of The Lambs which is also a tremendous film so again, no complaints here. Michaels got a lovely present of 8 points for his pick of Forrest Gump. That’s right folks, Forrest f*cking Gump. C&R also claimed 8 points with The Godfather. GrumpyG*lfer picked up 6 points for To Kill A Mockingbird which I also voted for. Cracking film. Weeman also picked up 6 points for Raging Bull. So Forrest f*cking Gump is better than Raging Bull and To Kill A Mockingbird. Forrest f*cking Gump.
Lots of posters managed to score a big fat headed zero, including Jeff for On The Waterfront and his arch rivalNicola Sturgeon superfly who, although he did get one vote, won’t be picking up any points as he failed to understand a very simple question and his pick of Lawrence Of Arabia fell outside the criteria. Jules will be disappointed to pick up some points for Annie Hall, but Galted will be devastated that no votes appeared for Amadeus. He saw Rupert Grint once. In a play. L*l. He also saw Laura Dern in a film. Double l*l out loud. Galted is a really funny guy. Dresses like a utter spazz but doesn’t let that hold him back in life. A solid 4 points for Hero keeps our resident champ at the top of the league but he can feel the hot breath of a few men down his neck now. He’ll enjoy that, no doubt. The only points Stella has managed to accrue have come from a book I picked for him. Perhaps the biggest surprise was Union Cane who picked up zero votes for his first choice of The Iron Lady.
Here is the updated league table:
1) Hero 30 pts
2) Paul 24 pts
3) Trebs 24 pts
4) C&R 20 pts
5) The Boss 19 pts
6) Harrier 16 pts

A few could do well here - I will predict the following will be top 5 (in no order):
Oasis, Stone Roses, GnR, Led Zep and Sex Pistols

Forrest Gump is a good film. Top 10. I always cry when he meets his nipper for the first time.

Early lead for Jeff Buckley. Lovely stuff. I voted for that as it was one of my alternatives. I was listening to "Last Goodbye" earlier today and it really is a brilliant song.

Appetite for Destruction is so over rated as an album, the Americans only liked it because it marked an end to Glam Metal, there is nothing special about it in the slightest.
The Slim Shady LP isn't Eminem's debut album, it was his mainstream breakthrough.
A better list than I was expecting, can only assume Dave's pick is Nola, top choice, doesn't get much better than Anselmo on vocals with Pep on guitar, Stone the Crow is the highlight.

So it is.
Right, the person (you know who you are) who picked it won't be getting any points. Do your own research, folks.

SerialDAVE gave me a delightful rundown via PM of who made up DOWN and where they had come from previously.
I am not ashamed to say, I had only heard of PANTERA (even then, I couldn't tell you a single song). The rest of it just read like the titles of horror movies.

You should listen to 'Good Friends And A Bottle Of Pills' by Pantera Tino, the most disturbing song there is, no doubt Dave took it a bit too literally.

Re: Culture Cup 2.0 round 5
Tino knows my feelings on Definitely Maybe, and if he followed my instructions then everyone who picked it knows my feelings too. Stone Roses album is a little overrated for me. Some gold on that, but some absolute crud too.
In no way should Eminem count, Infinite is his debut studio album.
On that list, The Strokes, KOL, Arctic Monkeys, Stone Roses and my guilty pleasure of that Linkin Park album would probably be my top 5.
Big respect to whoever picked NWA, though. I think I had BIG on my list of choices I sent to Tino.

You made the mistake of thinking anyone at the NME does an ounce of research before bunging together any old rubbish, it's a magazine that once voted The Smiths third best album as it's overall greatest. It's a crock of sh!t that should have closed down 20 years ago, no longer cool and the graveyard for journalists who failed elsewhere.

Re: Culture Cup 2.0 round 5
This is a difficult one - so many of the nominated choices are not the artist's best album. Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen, Guns N Roses, Kings of Leon, Led Zeppelin all went on to produce better albums. You could argue the same of a number of the other choices too.
I like the selection of NWA, but if I'd been going rap, I think Nas' Illmatic is the better debut, even if it didn't have the same cultural impact.

The way I always look at it between Definitely Maybe and The Stone Roses is the high spots are higher on The Roses and the low points are lower on Oasis. Definitely Maybe has nothing that comes anywhere near resurrection, made of stone or waterfall and the Roses has nothing as plain ordinary as Up in the Sky or Married with Children. The lyrics on Definitely Maybe are also nowhere near as good, as lets be honest most of Noel’s lyrics are borderline drivel at best.

That was my thoughts with the Who. They are one of my favourite bands ever, but in comparison to the likes of Who's Next or Quadrophenia My Generation is relatively poor.

Gone With The Wind is a great film! Not close to the best film featuring an Oscar winner, but when all the better choices have been taken, and when illegal entries are permitted, what can you do?
