We've got to beat Samoa first, before we start worrying about the Rugby Championship.

Re: TRC Round 1: New Zealand v Argentina, 17 July
Yes, for those people that haven't been following the weekend's results the problem with the Samoa game is that two NZ teams are facing off in the Super Rugby final a couple of days later and won't be released for the midweek international.
This in the Herald:
This in the Herald:
The All Blacks will call in reinforcements for next week's test against Samoa to cover for the loss of 17 players thanks to the all-New Zealand Super Rugby final between the Hurricanes and Highlanders.
The absence of 12 Hurricanes and five Highlanders will leave the selectors short in several areas for the historic match in Apia on Wednesday, July 8. They are especially thin at lock, midfield, wing and fullback.
At least three players are likely to be called in. One could be two-test Crusaders lock Dominic Bird, with Chiefs duo James Lowe, a wing or fullback, and midfielder Charles Ngatai, possibly in the mix. Neither Lowe nor Ngatai has played a test, but with Charles Piutau and Israel Dagg returning from injuries, Lowe or another outside back could find himself on the reserves bench at least.
Blues midfielder George Moala, already in the squad as injury cover, is likely to be on the bench to cover for the absence of Ma'a Nonu, Conrad Smith and Malakai Fekitoa. If so, it will be Moala's first test, with Sonny Bill Williams and Ryan Crotty likely to start.
Crusaders halfback Andy Ellis is likely to be involved in his first test since the 2011 World Cup final, with Chiefs player Brad Weber providing cover in what will be his debut test. Ellis, who will probably start, finds himself back in the frame with Tawera Kerr-Barlow injured and Aaron Smith and TJ Perenara involved in this Saturday's final.
Ellis' teammate, prop Nepo Laulala, who has trained in Auckland during the week because of Charlie Faumuina's neck injury, will probably be on the bench.
If Dan Carter starts at No 10, Colin Slade is a possibility to play on one wing. It might add to what will look like a pick-and-mix line-up, but Slade is reliable under the high ball, is a good defender, and offers another goalkicking option.
An afternoon kick-off in front of a packed and partisan crowd at Apia Park will be a baptism of fire for many of the younger members of the squad, but there is a confidence among the selectors that they are well prepared.
"We've been planning for this," selector Grant Fox told Newstalk ZB yesterday. "We knew this was a potential outcome so there has already been a fair degree of chat on this. We can take 29 to Samoa so we obviously have to work out a playing XV, a bench of eight and cover elsewhere to make sure that if anything happens in the short time up there with injuries at training etc that we can get that covered."
Asked what sort of challenge his men faced against a Samoa squad already based in Apia and ready to play the All Blacks in a test at home for the first time, Fox replied: "We know what we're getting into. It's the first test of the year for us but I wouldn't underestimate where our boys will get to either. Everyone is talking up what Samoa will bring and that's a given, we understand that, but let's not forget about our group and what the occasion will mean to us and what we'll bring to it."
Possible match-day squad
15. Israel Dagg, 14. Charles Piutau, 13. Ryan Crotty, 12. Sonny Bill Williams, 11. Colin Slade, 10. Dan Carter, 9. Andy Ellis, 8. Kieran Read, 7. Richie McCaw (c), 6. Jerome Kaino, 5. Sam Whitelock, 4. Brodie Retallick, 3. Owen Franks, 2. Keven Mealamu, 1. Wyatt Crockett. Reserves: Tony Woodcock, Nepo Laulala, Hika Elliot, Luke Romano, Liam Messam, Brad Weber, George Moala, James Lowe.

Re: TRC Round 1: New Zealand v Argentina, 17 July
I guess the one positive about a Highlanders vs Hurricanes final from an All Blacks point of view is that there is no first choice forward playing in either pack
Might have been useful to look at a few of the backs (Naholo, Milner Skudder etc) in a game like this though

This could be get very ugly for Argentina. I wouldn't be surprised if NZ put 40-50 on them.

Argentina's front row looks awesome, as it so often does. Like the look of their 8, although I remember seeing him as a flanker previously. Cordero looked a real talent too

Argentina are awful. They're trying to run everything and don't have the skills to do it. They're making silly mistakes and moving away from their strengths.
Not sure they deserve their place in this tournament at all. It was better when it was just the Tri Nations.

Impressive performance from NZ, their offloading was a joy to behold at times. Interesting to see Hansen complaining of "boring line out drives", perhaps he should concentrate more on defending them as it was a major weakness (the only real weakness I might add) in their performance. Fantastic scrum showing from NZ.

Yes nice to see the NZ scrum operate well. Interesting to note how most of the scrums we're well contested and stayed up mostly. Though a bit of twisting and turning in the second half. Perenara had a good game as did Franks. The backline will be a lot better with the return of the 3 Smiths and Savea.

Guttered for Naholo, he played well last night. Yeah I'm with you Tman, Jane is just not registering this year. Piutau played well enough last night and Moala handled himself well against Samoa. Piutau for me. Oops, just watching Maori ABs v NZ Babarians and Jane has just limped off. The dude is having rotten luck.

Hold it a sec, mate. You can't simply write that a girl like that is in a tv series about a women's prison without any dirty details. A women's prison???? My juvenile mind is already forming unseemly visions which are could be both pleasurable and painful.......Taylorman wrote:doctor_grey wrote:Mate, who's the talent in the pixx? Re: TRC Round 1: New Zealand v Argentina, 17 July
Poor enough performance from Argentina. They only scored from a few mauls really but it was their first game. They'll be disappointed by the scrum.
Good performance from the ABs. They can afford to rest players and still win comfortably.
I didn't get to see too much super rugby this year but one thing about Jane is his big game mentality. He was one of the stars of the last world cup. When many NZ players were feeling the pressure he stepped up.

I agree with this, what impresses me a bout Piutau is that I cant work out whether he's a right or left wing?

True, didn't realise he'd started four times on each wing until I just read it in the news. He's a solid performer in the ABs and industrious so he gets my vote. I recall he had a great debut or maybe it was just in his early games where he got right in amongst it so he has the right temperament.
Do you guys think Naholo was a realistic chance to make the RWC squad before his injury? I'm probably wrong, but I thought he was going to be the bolter that actually would have become a starter. Don't think the AB coaches/selectors work like this in general but he just looked so comfortable on debut against the Argies that he could have done it.

Re: TRC Round 1: New Zealand v Argentina, 17 July
Most definitely a realistic chance, his problem is however that Ben Smith covers as a wing and would always be ahead of him.
Fekitoa covers wing as well as being a mid fielder, and hes a head of him.
Slade provides extra cover to Carter and Barrett, but also covers wing so hes ahead of him.
Piutau covers both wings (and hopefully not fullback) and hes ahead of him.
The thing that Naholo did have over all the above sadly was that he was the form winger.

Highlights for anyone who missed the game:
Strangely deflating game.
Great looking Pumas side on paper - they just crippled themselves with all of those mistakes.
