Yes of course it is. Especially now with all the alphabet titles around.

When you have got a fighter like Kell Brook winning world titles at the weight it says it all. Beating Mayweather is the biggest thing a Welterweight can do

It's bigger than being a multi weight world titlist.

Marquez is a multiweight champ. What will he be remembered more for? His titles? Or being the guy that Manny could never quite figure out?
Not quite relating to the op's question but still somewhat relevant.

I've seen that he's been stripped by the wbo and obviously he doesn't care about that with one fight left.
He is bigger than a world championship for me. I think it's a legitimate question though that some may have a different view on.

It is a legitimate question but in this day and age, belts are not what they used to be. Of course becoming a champion is every boxers dream.
Still being champ doesn't mean you will be remembered long after your career has ended.
Loads of people know Buster Douglas. Not as the heavyweight champion of the world. He is known as the guy that handed Tyson his rear end!

Shouldn't think there is anything better than being introduced anywhere you go as a former World champion........
However in the short term a Mayweather win is bigger..It's a ticket to ride!!....Unfortunately however he is 37/38 and though his age doesn't seem to be an issue now .....It will be when he loses...If he loses...
"Wouldn't have beat a young Floyd"
floyd has any sense he picks a patsy next and then leaves before he gives a chance to the bitter types to puke on everything he's done......Like they try to do now..

Beating Floyd is the pinnacle in the sport and announces yourself as an undisputed number 1 (even running him close does that). Whilst the belts are nice and shiny, everyone in the welterweights knows who's no.1 regardless of whether he holds the belts or not (same goes for Rigo btw)

Not sure you become number 1 If you beat Floyd, Derby...........
Hagler took over the number 1 spot when Honey beat Curry and rightly so....
Number 1 needs longevity and impressive wins.......Not just one good night....
Unless of course it was Manny in a rematch.....As he's proven..

The first time you put the gloves on as a kid, you dream of becoming a world champion. With Mayweather though I think even to be offered a fight with him would beat being offered a world title shot. Not sure who the last fighter that you could say that about is. Oscar? Tysons first fight after jail maybe? Not many others.

At present, beating Mayweather would give you more recognition, attention and money for your next few fights than winning one of the alphabet titles.
In saying that, becoming world champs is the pinnacle of every boxer's dreams and if you were asked to have either of the below I think most would pick 2.
1- Beat Floyd but never became a world champion or;
2- Become a world champ but lose to Floyd

I agree with that. Khan more than less turned down a world title shot at Alexander to wait out a shot at Floyd. Khan had been a champ before at light welterweight but it would still have been big for him. More leverage too.
