What Did You Score?
Leading on from the Club Championships thread......
When another golfer asks you what you scored do you say your gross or nett score?

Always gross - if a stableford I would add also what poiints I think I've score for that hole
4 for 4 always raises eyebrows

Strange but this seems to vary in different areas where I have lived.
In Scotland and Suffolk golfers nearly always said gross but in Wiltshire and Surrey it was mainly nett.

Re: What Did You Score?
I'm between Surrey and Wiltshire and I've never heard nett scores announced except in modified form in stableford comps - something like....
"5 for 4 for two" (meaning gross 5, nett 4 for 2 points)
"5 for 4 for two" (meaning gross 5, nett 4 for 2 points)

Re: What Did You Score?
Bit of confusion here I think.
I am meaning golfers asking you in the clubhouse etc. what you scored for your round of 18 holes, not for each hole.

Re: What Did You Score?
Always gross score for me but the my gross and net are one and the same so I guess my answers irrelevant. Having said that I have noticed when playing in the states the guys I've played with tend to talk in nett scores compared to uk gross!

Re: What Did You Score?
We usually talk in gross, unless (like in my last medal round) your gross is SO Gross that disappearing home to watch the footie is a far better option than being met with consternation in the clubhouse :run2:

Re: What Did You Score?
When I was off 5 or 6 it always used to be gross. Nowadays with twice the handicap (at a much harder course) I find most of my golf is stableford, so it's how many points, but for the odd medal round sadly I do need to quote nett scores these days to make it sound vaguely respectable.

Re: What Did You Score?
depends who your talking to. generally the higher handicappers in our group will talk nett. single figures or those trying to push into single figures seem to talk gross. i just try and fit in with what makes other people comfortable.

Re: What Did You Score?
I heard a funny conversation the other day in the clubhouse between a 3 handicap and an 18 hcap
18: "What did you shoot?"
3: "69"
18: (with panicked look on face at the thought he might have been beaten) "What nett, yeah?"
3: "No gross, nett 66"
18: "Phew! I thought you had done me, I shot 65!"
3: "Well done, but I think I just beat you by a mere 14 shots!!!"

Re: What Did You Score?
Playing with the wife (Golf) I find it hard listening to her say to me that she scored 2 points etc. So now I just say 'that was an 8 how many points for that, another 4 is it?'

Re: What Did You Score?
Gross even though net always sounds better. If I've had a really good round I'll suffix it with "gross" just to make sure people know what I meant e.g. 69....GRRROSS!! Conversely if I've had an absolute stinker and I need to talk it off my chest I may say net but specifically suffix it with "Net" e.g. 87 NETT!! usually preceded by a few descriptive adjectives
