If Only They Had Power......

Was watching the Brian Rose fight at the weekend, and thinking, he fought Carson Jones in every way, boxing on the backfoot, getting in close and mixing it up, and not afraid to stand toe to toe for a proper dust up.

Got me thinking that if Brian Rose had any decent power he may have been a contender.

Can you think of any other fighters thorughout time that made you think "If only they had power"?

Always thought Ian Napa had some lovely skills, if he had a bit more of a dig on him suspect he would have gone further in the sport.

Cheers Rowley, I was thinking about Paulie Malignaggi, and Irelands own Bernard Dunne (Although Bernie did have that suspect chin) he was a beautiful boxer nonetheless....

Wayne McCullogh immediately spings to mind. With his workrate and chin, he'd have been a monster.

Floyd Mayweather?

Floyd had power in the lower weight divisons. If he had similar power now, he would be more dominant for sure.

Definitely agree with McCullough. A fighter with his chin and stamina would be a nightmare if he had concussive power.

Ali? Yes he had a good punch and stopped a lot of opponents, but imagine he had the power of a Frazier or Foreman along with his own skill set. Scary thought!

If Tony Bellew had the power that he claimed to have he'd have been some fighter.

Ward springs to mind. I'm sure he's not carrying feathers but he's worth a mention.

Martin Murray might have had a bit more success against Golovkin if he had a harder dig.

To be fair to Carson Jones, his best work has come at 147. The decision to hold a rematch at 158 lbs. was for Rose's benefit. Jones is no mug, regardless of his record. I thought he fought well. I expected Rose to crumble late, so good for him.

Gave up on Jones after a draw with Dean Byrne.....

A journeyman at welter is going to be no good at 158....Been living off his performance against a comatose Brook for too long.

I think Andrade showed us all how good Rose is.........I felt embarrassed for him.

Pointless rematch.

Thing is you can't really apply the "If he had power he'd have been an ATG" - part of the reason those guys who are feather-fisted fight the way they do is because they have to be slick. Suddenly giving them Pacquiao power would naturally change the way they fight and may have simply been better slick fighters with no dig than fighters with a bit of a dig.

But for the sake of the thread:

Mayweather. If he'd carried power up he may be more fondly remembered with a highlight KO reel.

Calderon. Wouldn't have mattered much anyway as people like Truss don't watch the little guys.

As evidenced by his woeful displays in the prediction league.

I dont understand how he holds so many opinions on modern fighters yet never watches them fight?

If Billy Conn could hit nobody touches him, great boxer and mover to start with,add power and your talking the complete package.

Conn’s power is a bit of a puzzler. He went pro relatively young and on the back of zero amateur fights so learnt his trade in the pros. Think his power was starting to develop at light heavy but by the time he was really starting to learn how to punch and had developed his fully matured power he moved up to heavyweight where any development was obviously masked. Not arguing he was a power puncher by any stretch but think he had a bit more of a dig than he got credit for. As Truss has alluded to Joe Louis certainly had little patience for the theory that Conn could not punch.

Sad thing about Conn is he was a 170 pounder that dominated the 175 pounders.......If there had been a 168 division back then I imagine he'd be more than a footnote in history...

I like the Tony Bellew one, just because I actually like him, mouthy piece of work, but bet hes a sound guy outside the ring. I was so hoping he would be a wrecking machine but sadly no to be.

some of the more famous light hitters put on a show with their defensive masstery. Would pep. locche etc have been so compelling if they were bangers too? Would have been fun to see locche clown around and then spark someone when he'd tired of showboating

Truss losses sometimes mean nothing. Look at Salido or Kominsky for that fact. 2 guys who you just cant count out

Paulie is the one for me. Calderon is also a good shout as well.

Wars would be more exciting if he had that power going for him.

Calderon, floyd, Whitaker, would have been very different boxers with pop. Probably not as successful.

I agree that he must have had a dig, but had he had KO power, would be hard to see who would have beat him at Lightheavy, beautifully skilled boxer.

Bit of a Michael Nunn of his day.....We all know that Nunn had plenty of power ...Parker,Kalambay, Roldan ..when he wanted to !!...

Conn just had to keep boxing and he just got a bit too clever, must have kicked himself 1000 times after that fight.
