weekend very wet and windy.
Hi all,
I played on Saturday when we got to the course it was raining so we said we would go out and play.
it was a 15 hole comp. But the more holes we played the wetter it got. It got to the point where you were
trying to hold the golf club tighter and tighter as it got wetter. Even my new wet gear was starting to leak.
(I know how the USA team felt in Wales in the Ryder cup).
So after 9 we decided we go not go any further as the clubs felt as if they would fly out of your hands and be a danger
to anyone that was crazy enough to be out in the rain.
For the nine holes I had 15 points and one of my partners off 9 had about 21 which was very good score.
Not sure we should have come in as course did not close officially as I think they were probably looking for the revenue
which is really needed due to a bad December.
Question should the course have closed or should we have continued to finished out the round?

Should the course have been closed? Depends entirely on the course, a links can withstand continuous torrential rain and still be playable.
Was there any standing water on the greens? Did the fairways start to flood to the point where you couldn't take relief from casual water?

The course is normally only closed if the conditions are harming the course long term if played on, or there is a health and safety issue for the players.

There was water on fairways but could just about find some areas where it was not too bad. All the cups were full of water
with some surface water on the greens would say this got worse later on, some bunkers looked unplayable.

Re: weekend very wet and windy.
Played in our monthly medal on Sunday, it was just starting to rain, as we stood on the first tee.
Now I have never ever walked of the course, when playing in a comp, but Sunday was the first, after 14 holes of torrential downpour, I had, had enough, my waterproofs were not waterproof to the rain on Sunday, my clothes were so wet, that I could not have went into the clubhouse, but had to spent 30mins in the car driving home.
I am now looking for new waterproof trousers and jacket, and I think I might need new golf shoes as it might be September before they dry out.
PS
About the score, well I had my playing partners card, that ended up one soggy mess totally unreadable. :crying:

I know how you feel from last week, it just so hard to play in the that type of weather but at least you gave it a go.
Played this week on Saturday 15 holes competition had 30points so not too bad made a few mistakes
So all in all there is room for improvement.
Oldparwin there is always next week.

What is it with 15 hole comps at your club? Do you have 3 holes out of action for winter maintenance or something?

It's certainly one way to say you've shot in the 60's if you have a good round. :606laugh:

Casually stroll into the clubhouse. "Any good today mate?" "Not bad, hit a couple of skanky ones but still managed to get it round in 64"

I think it has got to do with day light hours in the winter maybe trying to get more people in playing in the competition.
The next few weeks it should return to full 18 as the days get longer.

Oh right, that's a novel way to get people playing during the winter. Wouldn't work for us, the 15th is a long way from the clubhouse :606laugh:

Would work great at my club as 15th green isn't too far from the clubhouse and 16, 17 (and to a lesser extent) 18 can be real card-wreckers!

Re: weekend very wet and windy.
We have an annual match against the County 1st team - yesterday! Rained for 3 hours before we teed off, and never let up till we had finished dinner and were on the way home! Soaked (in fact soaked doesn't do it justice, felt like we'd been waterboarded) but great fun and always good to play with top quality ams. It's a good format - 2 low club handicaps vs County player and a higher club handicap - 4BBB off scratch. Been going now for over 40 years, and always a pity when it pours down, but it is February!!!!
We lost!!
