World Cup Matches
I thought I'd start a match thread for the minnows.
Georgia 10-3 Tonga
Tonga had a try disallowed at the end of the first half due to a forward pass. Looked harsh.

He should have waited and used the TMO but blew his whistle too early.

Re: World Cup Matches
Very true - the scrum-half's pass was lateral, and the try should have stood.
Got to love Will Helu in this match - every time he get's mentioned I think...

Re: World Cup Matches
You'd feel pretty gutted for Tonga if they come away empty handed after this long siege.

Guys just one thing, Chris Pollock the touch judge called the forward pass not Owens.

Well that was an extremely hard earned try. Phase after phase, minute after minute. Both teams working so hard.

Re: World Cup Matches
Sorry if this is the wrong place for this but as a casual fan watching the game last night, can someone explain what the yellow card the Fijian number 9 received was for? Itv didn't explain it at all!
Also what results in a penalty and what results in a scrum
Thanks in advance, a casual fan

Re: World Cup Matches
I believe that Matawalu tried to get under the ball to stop it being grounded, but he came in from an offside position.
See Law 17.4c- Offside at the Maul
http://laws.worldrugby.org/?law=17
Because the referees view was that that prevented a try being scored, he awarded a penalty try.

Players joining the maul. Players joining a maul must do so from behind the foot of the hindmost team-mate in the maul. The player may join alongside this player. If the player joins the maul from the opponents’ side, or in front of the hindmost team-mate, the player is offside.
Sanction: Penalty kick on the offending team’s offside line
Because the referees view was that that prevented a try being scored, he awarded a penalty try.

Re: World Cup Matches
Great win for Georgia and good to see Gorgodze at his rampaging best! They should finish 3rd in this pool. Will be interesting to see how their scrum fare against Argentina.

Hard to describe, but a scrum is a way of restarting the game after something like a forward pass or knock on, I.e. after something deemed not cynical or foul play, and usually caused by a mistake by the team in possession. A penalty on the other hand is the result of a law break/foul play such as offside, high tackle, slowing down the ball at the ruck, etc. Just to confuse things though you can opt for a scrum if you have been awarded a penalty, usually if you think you've got a chance of scoring from it. Not sure that description helps?!

I can see Argentina struggling in this one as their strength in the forwards goes right into Georgia's strength too. This should be quite a forwards battle anyway.

Re: World Cup Matches
Only 3rd win for them in a RWC, 93% in tackles success. Awesome.
Good start of the competition with all teams giving it all so far.

Re: World Cup Matches
Good win for Georgia. Sets up a good game vs Argentina and possibly a chance to qualify. I have been impressed with what I have seen with Georgia at and since the last World Cup. Just a shame these teams don't get a chance to play against the established top 10 teams more often.whocares wrote:Great win for Georgia and good to see Gorgodze at his rampaging best! Re: World Cup Matches
It is plain that preconceived ideas of the Teams involved could be very wrong,England won
with a bonus point against Fiji but had to fight for it.
Georgia perhaps surprisingly beat Tonga but the TMO in both matchs was very tedious.
