Hearn on PPV
From Boxing News:
What merits a pay-per-view (PPV) fight, because the ones you [Matchroom] put on are incredibly random?
Stuart Massie, Facebook
I think the great debate about PPV is so overhyped. We are now in October and there have been two PPVs [on Sky Sports Box Office] this year. One was Floyd Mayweather-Manny Pacquiao in May, and the other was our May 30 card where if you’re telling me you didn’t get value for money that night, well, quite frankly, I don’t believe you. Every now and again we get a chance to put a show on and create fights that cannot be made without PPV.
When you look at the May 30 card there is no way I could ever have brought Jorge Linares over to fight Kevin Mitchell on a normal Saturday night Fight Night. There is no way
I could have brought Evengy Gradovich over to fight Lee Selby, so add those to Anthony Joshua-Kevin Johnson, and Kell Brook-Frankie Gavin and, for me, that is 100 per cent a PPV card. But in answer to what is a PPV fight? The numbers will tell you. The Tony Bellew-Nathan Cleverly rematch [November 2014] did more buys than Carl Froch-Mikkel Kessler II [May 2013], but it also had on the card [James] DeGale, [Scott] Quigg, Joshua. All I know is, that the fights I’ve put on PPV, I could not, in a million years, put all those fights on a normal Saturday Fight Night.

When you can't afford Jorge Linares ...
You know the future is PPV.

Amazed Clev-Bellew 2 did more buys than Kessler-Froch 2. I'm struggling with that one.

Re: Hearn on PPV
They built it up as a grudge match and people are suckers for those.....
I didn't buy the PPV.........But I guess Hearn is hoping the ignorance of the sporting fan will come through when people are getting in eachothers faces....
Maybe Kessler didn't resonate with the sports fan..

Never brought the clev v bellew 2 as i knew if people brought that pile of rubbish it would be the start of us fans getting ripped off with at least 3 ppvs a year and mostly rubbish in between

Re: Hearn on PPV
Because suckers like me who are meant to know better bought it
On a side note is the Brook fight still on PPV?
If so probably going to be the lowest PPV numbers in history, I don't have Sky any more so I won't get sucked into the hype either

Re: Hearn on PPV
To be honest I don't begrudge the price a couple of bottles of Chablis to watch some Boxing...
But I won't pay for shows that I regard as being on a par as normal SKY boxing events..
Principle and all that...

Re: Hearn on PPV
What he doesn't address is the lack of decent boxing in between. He doesn't have to stack cards and wait for a PPV window. I'm not sure he has enough fighters who sell tickets, so he must bunch them together to sell arenas. Also Sky obviously aren't paying enough to cover good fights on their own merit.
Anyway Hearns a good promoter, but he's absolutely full of it. You can't be one without the other I'm afraid

Re: Hearn on PPV
Hearn has pushing that spin for a while. Its BS. He could do these fights without ppv, its just more profitable to Matchroom to have ppv.
Of course he got have got Linares to fight Mitchell over here if he was willing to pay. Linares has fought all over the place. Matchroom just wouldnt have been able to make as good a profit.
He could have comfortably put on the fights Matchroom have made so far this year without any need for ppv. Why isnt he putting together fights that are worthy of headlining a ppv?

Re: Hearn on PPV
I'd be interested to know how many on here will be buying the upcoming ppv. Anyone?
Can't for the life of me see how that card can be justified as a ppv. It's awful. Only thing I can think of is there will be more added to it or some sort of surprise in the next week. I just can't see it as it's not ppv worthy.
I'll normally watch any boxing that's on tv and if it's boxing on ppv or x factor then I'll generally just pay the ppv price but i can't with this one.

Re: Hearn on PPV
When I saw the headline I thought Eddie himself was on Ppv. Logically the next step... Paying to watch him sell punnets of strawberries... Or perhaps putting one of his explanations of why something is Ppv, on sky box office 'listen to eddie's latest justification of ppv, it's the one we've all been waiting for' just £19.99

I certainly won't be buying it, i can't see much being added to the existing card either as its only 3 weeks away

Re: Hearn on PPV
I do usually buy PPV, even just for sole control of the tele for the evening. But since Wlad v Fury was off it and the lack of any announcement regarding the rest of the card. I will not be getting this one.

Re: Hearn on PPV
You'd have to be a big kel brook fan to buy this as it stands... And if you're one of those, you'll be at the fight.
Let's see what rabbits Eddie tries to pull out of the hat.
I won't be buying.

Re: Hearn on PPV
Its not PPV anymore, but the fury fight still is:
October 24 - Brook v Chaves, Eubank Jr v Jeter, McDonnell v Parodi
Kell Brook looks for his 36th straight win, defending his IBF welterweight title for the third time in front of a passionate home crowd at the Sheffield Arena. Chris Eubank Jr is hoping to emulate his legendary father as he makes his Sky debut against American Tony Jeter. The full fight night is live on Sky Sports 1
November 28 - Klitschko v Fury, DeGale v Bute
The autumn's finale sees Klitschko v Fury from Dusseldorf, live on Sky Sports Box Office. Plus James DeGale defends his world title in Canada against Lucian Bute on Sky Sports

Not sure if Fury is a PPV attraction in his own right, better be one hell of a card to command the PPV fee

I'd pay to watch Wlad - Fury...
Biggest prize in sports..and I think Fury has a chance..
Bute is crap so I'm not interested in that..

Thank god Brook is no longer PPV, it will be interesting to see if Sky have AJ v Whyte as ppv as the cards are so close together

Re: Hearn on PPV
Reckon this turns out to be good news all round....
They were definitely planning to have both the Brook/Fury shows and Joshua/Whyte as PPVs.
There's no way they can have 2 PPVs in 3 weekends right before Christmas.
Is there?
