JFK - If an assassination can ever be a good thing..
As great as JFK was his clout was very minimal...Unlike his VP who was leader in the Senate. ..knew all the Senators and more importantly had the good ole boy touch and a pocket load of colleagues secrets....He also had the most important thing for a politician...respect !!...
What the USA lost in Dallas it gained in ....
Civil rights legislation...medicare...medicaid....greater funding for schools in poor areas....work finding schemes..."The great society"
All of which Kennedy would have struggled to bring in...
If like me you think that the Generals would have conned any President into invading Nam....Then there is a case for LBJ being one of the greatest Presidents of all time along with Jackson, Polk, FDR and Lincoln...
JFK's assassination was one of America's darkest days but it did have its compensations..

An interesting proposition, Truss but I feel the US people would much rather have shown their immense "respect" for LBJ (perhaps the sort of respect that the wife of John Glenn showed when he wanted to visit her at home while her husband was in space and was left fuming in his car while Mrs Glenn told an aide that "If that polecat so much as sets foot on my front lawn I'll have him arrested for trespass". Yep, that's respect for ya..!!) by actually electing him to office where he could take the Presidential Oath of Office in the customary way, rather than a the rush job on Air Force One, conducted by the first judge they could whistle up while JFK's blood and brains were still congealing on Jackie Kennedy's pink frock.
I was only a nipper when JFK was killed. I remember the hue and cry at the time and even then, the common adult populace of the Isle of Wight were muttering that "bain't that bloody Oswald done no shooting." It really was that transparently obvious that there was more to it than a lone gunman.
Be that as it may, LBJ did achieve some good things and I accept your opinion that Kennedy might have struggled to get such things through but we'll never know, will we..?
