Depressing that this won't be on telly but to start the thread of, apparently Big Naka has won Fijian Players' Player of the Year Award & Pacific Island Players' Player of the Year Award:
Considering some of the players in that Fiji team now, that's some going.
Well done big feller. I hope that we smash Nathan Bomrys' piggy bank to keep you here.
It's going to take that...

After the year he has had, it is well deserved! Did he not sign a 3 year extension late last season?

I hope to sh!t that Dunbar is properly fixed this time because these long term injuries are killing us.
I would imagine that sticking with Mike Cusack will be seen in retrospect to be at best an indulgence and at worst a mistake. We could badly use an international quality tighthead at the moment who doesn't need 3 months off after each game.
Don't get me wrong, I have nothing but sympathy for Mike because whatever he has is clearly debillitating but we're in the rarified air of professional athletes here for god's sake. If your body doesn't work, what value are you?

Harsh but fair GC.
When you look at the workload that Nel gets through at Edinburgh and compare that to Big Mike, it neatly reinforces the stereotype of the Edinburgh citizen putting his all into his work for the greater good of society whilst the Weegie just signs on for the bare minimum and puts his feet up.....

And it's one of the reasons why Nelly will be very highly sought after when his contract expires. Solomons needs to cash in his premium bonds in order to keep that particular dream team together.

Is Brown fit? If so I'd start him with Cusack and Reid. The sooner that trio gets playing together and up to speed the better.

I think we may see the academy kid on the bench for the next 2 games and we can probably just about get away with that. We need better than that for the euro games though and some cover for any more injuries. At least the Georgian will get some game time and will know the calls!
It would be embarrassing if we could not get a team out due to lack of hookers

Just saw this week's Warriors TV: they have a feature with the Legend that is Dan parks and in his highlights clip they manage to show him making a tackle AND sprinting to the line to score an intercept try. Mind you he was being chased by a prop. Who was actually reeling him in.

All joking aside Dan Parks was a great servant to Glasgow and Scotland. Unlike Duncar Weir, Parks did actually control the game with his kicking and had a fantastic range with the boot. His goal kicking was superb, and just look at his points tally for club and country.
I remember back in the day having plenty of arguments with folk on here who were calling for World Class Phil and a very green and unproven Jackson (who was very much second fiddle to Parks at Glasgow back then) to take over, but the fact was that back then Parks was the best option we had. In his second stint for Scotland he was often the best player we had on the park. His limitations were plain for all to see, and he wouldn't be a good option for us now with the outside backs we have, but his limitations were more than matched by those of his rivals back in the day.

Re: Glasgow Warriors v Benetton Treviso, 27 November
fES , agree with most of your comments re Parks. The Calcutta Cup game when Robinson brought him back and exposed him horribly was a step too far. He won The Warriors many games with his kicking (esp v Edinburgh) and also fecked up and Irish slam in Dublin (along with J Beattie ). Defensively it was normally Bernie Stortoni who covered for him - a tactic that Sean Lineen/Shade Munro developed and worked perfectly (Stortoni came into the defensive line from FB and Desperate Dan went absent to 15). This worked only for offensive set pieces naturally enough.

Actually stronger than I expected. I suspect that had we beaten Saints there might have been a few more people rested.

Yes indeed. A few out there have a point (s) to prove. Seems strange that Junior is not at least benched with Tommy Seymour rested. No wing cover. Glad to see Sam Johnson get his Glasgow career going at last.

That pack should be good enough, although I would be happier if Cap'n Jonny was rested. Hopefully, he'll do 40 then put his feet up. Ditto the front row: as soon as we're comfortably ahead bench them en masse. And just to labour the point; give Pudding the full 80 to get his match fitness back but replace asap.

That is a stronger team than I was expecting as well and it means a few of them will surely be standing down next week against Leinster, who you would imagine will be going for this one as they are more or less out of Europe already.
I think there must be an element of getting some of them back in the saddle. I hope this is the right thing to do. Using the bench early must surely be the plan.

Well I at least expected him to give sound anti-ageing advice, but I've wasted so much money at the Clarins counter at Frasers and I still look like George Clooney's stunt-double after a scene involving fire and motorcycle crashes.funnyExiledScot wrote:21st Century Schizoid Man wrote:Need a big game from Hart, who apart from 20 mins v Cardiff has done the square sum of feck all since arriving.

Winning when you don't play well is meant to be a good thing. Truth is its not very inspiring really that we still have not got out of our malaise.
You get the feeling that the WC really has taken a lot out of Glasgow. I hope that we can hang in there till our form returns, it will eventually!

I have, they don't have much of a pack and what happened doesn't really surprise me. Scrapping a win in rainy condition against the bottom placed team is probably where they are.

Re: Glasgow Warriors v Benetton Treviso, 27 November
Hart and Finn Russell do not work. How long does it take Toonie and co. to get this. Hart is glacially slow. Finn needs fast quick ball to spark things. Tonight Strauss, Weir and Ali Price won us that game with a MoM from Adam Ashe- this was all in the last 8 mins FFS.
I do not get this much. Why go to all the bother of signing a giant destructive winger like Big Tacky and not give him THE FECKIN BALL. Feckin unbelievable tbh!
And btw if Treviso had a decent 10 they would have won it by some margin.

Sounds like Mike Blair has quickly become Glasgow's most important player - who would have thought it!
Hart must be the only Edinburgh player to move to Glasgow and become worse, which was a shame because he was an ok player at Edinburgh. Maybe because our glacial style of play suited him!

Our problems lie in the RWC players looking jaded and in trying to adapt to our new forwards coach. They are still stuck with Shade Munro's coaching - personally I reckon it worked but Toonie maybe thought it was too linked to the Sean Lineen regime and he wanted a change in direction. Leinster will destroy us if we play like that and they are not playing that well.

Toonie didn't do his job properly which was recruiting a decent tighthead, either from the SH or from the NH and there were some options.
There is not much the forwards coach can do when Puafisi is your 1st choice tighthead.

GC - you have it. We have not got it going this season at all. Toonie seems calm about it but maybe he needs to give some of our "stars" a huge feckin reality check. Finn R is playing like he believes in his own publicity ffs! I am dreading the next few weeks and I think The Luvvies may give us a man shaming at The Library and Scotstoun. We badly need Henry Pyrgos back to help Mike Blair, then bring on Ali Price. Hart is just a very poor rugby player and feel Toonie was conned into taking him.
The two glimmers of encouragement from last night were the performance of Adam Ashe and Dunky Weir exploding into the game. He really won us that with his energy.

Unfortunately for Glasgow they've not got long to try to regain their mojo - Leinster first up then two must win Euro games!
For those that didn't see the Edinburgh game last night, we man shamed the Dragons up front but were utterly inept in attack again. We stumbled our way to 4 tries despite them receiving 4 yellow cards and down to 12 men at one point.
Glasgow in full flow would have put 7 or 8 tries past that Dragons team

RD, thats generous but we are suffering from a post WC blues and the dreadful business in Paris. I know that the players should be professional but they are only human . FFS I am - just !!! Strange but things are not the same as last season. Even the atmosphere at Scotstoun is muted. Feel sorry for Johnny Gray as 3 games in to his captaincy things are going ,well, mental.

Re: Glasgow Warriors v Benetton Treviso, 27 November
First of all everyone just needs to calm down, if at the start of the season, when you consider the players away for the world cup, we'd been offered fifth place 6 points off the top after 8 games most people would have taken it I'd imagine. Then when you add in what the players have been through, the heart breaking nature of the world cup exit and then the trauma of Paris I think everyone needs to relax a bit.
That said the recruitment over the summer was very poor the only signing that has added a dimension to the side was "Big T" and maybe Mike Blair. At the end of last season the onus should have been progressing on the European stage, the key to that was to look on improving the existing starting XV not just papering over cracks left by departing players; they should have looked to sign a top class hooker and a top class tighthead instead they've signed a hooker who can't throw and a tighthead who can't scrum. They signed Grayson Hart to replace Niko Matawalu and the less said about that the better, Mike Blair is a player who I believe would have been signed anyway as the murmurings around his signing suggested a coaching role of sorts in the future. That said when you have players like Jonny Gray, Nakarawa, Strauss, Russell, Bennett, Dunbar, Seymour and Hogg you're never going to be bad team but they can probably afford just about one poor year with these guys before they start looking elsewhere, if this season fails to pick up then recruitment next year will have to be outstanding, interestingly Nel's contract is up at the end of this year...

Numbers, you are talking sense here...BUT
The next few weeks; between now and the Northhampton match will define our season.
Worst case scenario;
Ladyboys home...lose
Scaahletts home and away... do a Cardiff and lose both, out of Europe
Annual Slaughter Of The Effeminates... Nel, Chinhook and Dickinson manshame us out of both matches and even making the play offs looks a forlorn hope
Northampton away, well we could hold the End Of Season Dinner Dance that weekend.
Best Case Scenario
A narrow win. (Though a LBP would be acceptable at the mo)
Home win against Scaahletts which eliminates them from Europe and they field their seconds against us at Parc Y Scarlets, letting us scrape a 6-3 win.
Solomans finally rests his knackered front row and our backs get the ball, Big T scores a hat trick in the first leg and Meatball kicks all the points in a 51-0 win in the second.
Riding on a tidal wave of confidence and feel good rugby we stuff Northampton and Dan Carter buys himself out of his contract at Racing rather than face Rob Harley.
I wonder which way the dice will fall
