Boxing venues
Evening all,
If you were a boxer and had a choice of venues which would it be and why? Would your choice be for the atmosphere, the fights that had taken place before hand and the legends that had fought there or would it be your home town one?
Think I would go for the Palace. Lots of great fights there over the years and was a real hub for Vegas fights at one time. I feel it's a shame that it now gets over looked for the MGM and Manderlay Bay.
Cheers

Pride Park - Think it would be great to box in your footy clubs stadium
M.E.N arena (or whatever it's called now) - Boxing in your home town in front of all your friends and family.

Re: Boxing venues
Don't know what the facilities are like at Caesars Palace so Idon't know If I'd want to box there..
As a fan I'd love to be at one of those important outdoor fights from the turn of the century where history was made in front of the afternoon sun......Where by the end of the day legacies were made and broken as the sun went down....
If I could watch one fight and be at a stadium it would be the specially erected one in Carson City for Corbett v Fitzsimmons......The great Gentleman vs the top 10 ATG Fitz as they played cat and mouse with eachother....

I would like to box in Croke Park. Irish fans are the most passionate and make the most noise.

He is far away from my weight class. Obviously he would box my head off, but still!

Re: Boxing venues
I guess most people would like to fight in their hometowns.
My favourite venues (that I've attended) are:
1. MEN Arena
2. York Hall
3. Belfast Slipways (Ok, that was a temporary arena!).
4. Leeds Arena
5. Magna Centre
And the worst:
1. Peterlee Sports Centre
2. Upton Park
3. Wigan Sports Centre
4. Newcastle Arena
5. Echo Arena

Re: Boxing venues
Ah yes York Hall. Lots of fighters have mentioned how much they loved to fight there.
The SSE Arena in Belfast is class too. I have been to a number of fights there. Also Ulster Hall and the kings hall. Unfortunately I have never travelled outside of Ireland for any fights. Have a couple of mates going to Frampton vs Quigg. I couldn't get a ticket.

Love Belfast. Shame Frampton's outgrown those venues as I'd love to get in at the Ulster Hall.

Ulster hall is a good atmosphere. Not very big, but plenty of noise.

MEN Arena is too big. Same with any of the football stadiums people have mentioned. Awful for boxing.hazharrison wrote:My favourite venues (that I've attended) are:

Trent (Capital) FM Arena you always get a good view.

Always found the MEN to be great for boxing - big venue but the seating is great (good view from anywhere).

Name just says it all! Must also double up as the worst place for a night out on that list!

Did Froch fight Dirrell there? I was at that fight.

I attended a Hatton/Calzaghe card up here - the infamous Tocker Pudwill card!

Can't remember who Hatton fought - Joe somebody.
I recall our row hollering at a load of Alex Arthur supporters who refused to sit down. It was that memorable.

Thought the MEN was perfect when watched Quigg/Martinez. Brilliant atmosphere too.

I was at that one too - Calzaghe was supposed to fight Thomas Tate and Hatton against some unbeaten Brazilian - instead we got Tocker Pudwill and Joe Hutchinson.
Peterlee ? Who was fighting there Haz ? been to the Rainton Meadows a few times - view is always good.
The 02 is the best all round venue I've been - cracking seats and arena. Wembley for the Froch/Groves fight was one of the worst organised once the main event got on the way - everyone just stood on seats and I ended up walking right past the £300 seats and watched it standing up - the stewards were woeful.
Cheers, Rodders

I watched Hall vs Napa one time and then Ashley Theophane another (at Peterlee). Rough old place.
Yeah, like Rainton. Always a bit dicey hailing a taxi afterwards, though!

That's the one. MEN isn't too bad, just a bit big. The football stadiums I was saying were awful.hazharrison wrote:Scottrf wrote:MEN Arena is too big. Same with any of the football stadiums people have mentioned. Awful for boxing.hazharrison wrote:My favourite venues (that I've attended) are:

Re: Boxing venues
I saw Kell Brook v Carson Jones 2 and Luke Campbell's debut at Craven Park stadium in Hull. That was a bad venue. Vue was terrible and the crowd was fairly ropey too.

Re: Boxing venues
Favourite so is definitely The Odyssey (SSE Arena) in Belfast atmosphere is outstanding. Pity its not a bit bigger as can't see many more Frampton fights happening there.
Also like the Ulster Hall.
Worst:
The Devenish - It's basically a hotel/bar in Belfast that hosts some small hall shows. Not in the greatest area to be honest.
Wembley - Great for watching football - Terrible for Boxing.
