With two thirds of the field earning points from the final standings it's no suprise that eighteen of the twenty players in the points scoring positions were picks; Peter Malnati and Fabian Gomez were the non picks and both had high finishes.
By virtue of a 1-2 finish from Jordan Spieth and Patrick Reed 1GrumpyGolfer was just about able to hold off Davie and McLaren who both outscored him but didn't have enough to overhaul him. McLaren had all of his picks score points while LadyPutt, Owen10ozzy, and SirBenson each had five picks score points; Owen didn't have quite the quality of LadyPutt or SirBenson who's picks included Spieth and Reed respectively. Beninho, Davie, EmmDee57, Eyetoldyouso, I'm Never Wrong, Pedro, Raycastleunited, and SetupDetermines all had four picks score points. There was a wide range in quality in their picks and Davie was the only one with Spieth. 1GrumpyGolfer, BlueCoverman, BobtheJob, Kwinigolfer, and Super_Realist each had three picks score points.
Jason Day had the low round, not with a 62 but a 65 was still impressive enough on a day when everyone beat par. BlueCoverman, Owen10ozzy, Pedro, and Raycastleunited earned points from Day.

After being confused by the mild weather in NorthEast USA so far this winter I have not embarked upon hibernation and am now suffering the shock of this cold snap. With much befuddlement [fanfare] the Fantasy League is back [fanfare]. Welcome to the warmup event for the start of the 2016 Fantasy League [clap, whoop, whistle, etc.].
Not only is the League back but we have new rules designed to delight and confuse. Gone are the bonuses and rewards for poor play, in come bonuses for good play in round two (but only in a no cut event), more events other than WGC's will get a weighted two rating, four sessions with fewer events, and some OWGR like ranking system (still to be determined).
Anyway let's get back to the golf. The PGA Tour kickoffs 2016 with golf in Hawaii and opening up is the Hyundai Tournament of Champions. A total of 36 players won PGA Tour events in 2015 allowing them to tee it up at Kapalua. Four of them declined the invitation for one reason or another; the absentees are Rory McIlroy, Justin Rose, Jim Furyk, and Shane Lowry. Jordan Speith and Jason Day renew hostilities at the peak of the World Golf Rankings as the headliners in Category A. Patrick Reed qualified for the event courtesy of his victory in the 2015 Tournament of Champions and is the defending champion. Previous winners include the Johnsons, Zach and Dustin, who won this in 2014 and 2013 respectively and Davis Love III who won it back in 1993!
Due to the limited field size the number of picks is scaled back to two from each category plus reserve. This is also a no cut event so the usual cut bonuses are not in effect but additional points are available in round two.

Everyone please notify others of changes in field before tournament starts and invalid or incomplete picks from participants.

RULES
Picking players: Unless stated, pick a total of 6 players as follows:
Pick 2 players from each category, plus a reserve per category.
Event winner: The person with the most total points at the completion of each event will be declared the winner. In case of a tie, those involved will match-off each picks' final position score in descending order. i.e. Player A's best finish vs. Player B's best finish, Player A's 2nd best finish vs. Player B's 2nd best finish, etc... until one's pick finishes better than the other(s).
If there is a tie after all 6 picks have been matched against each other, those involved will be declared co-winners.
Player Withdrawals: If you pick a player who withdraws during a tournament, that player will be eligible for points for all completed rounds and making the cut if they withdraw after the cut. It must be apparent that the player completed their round for them to be eligible for either the low round, worse round, top 5, or top 10 low round scores. If a player withdraws before starting the tournament then your reserve will be put in that player's place. It is up to you to check that your players are in the starting field.
Holidays / Absences: If you will be absent for an upcoming event (e.g holidays) you may post the numbers on the most recent fantasy league event and the respective tournament(s) that apply or PM them to me. Example: Pick 3 players and 1 reserve from each category and the relative event number or name: Players 4, 5, and 8, reserve 9 from Category A, players 1, 3, and 7, reserve 5 from Category B, players 1, 2 and 17, reserve 12 from Category C, Event #12.
Failure to submit picks: If you do not submit picks you will be awarded zero points.
Deadlines: Picks must ideally be submitted before the first drive is struck on the first day of the tournament. However, late picks submitted after the tournament has begun must be for players who have yet to start (or are not showing a score on europeantour.com, PGATour.com, etc.), and these will not be valid unless they are seconded by any other league member.
All fantasy league disputes and discrepancies will be considered by the League Judge: LadyPutt. All decisions made by the League Judge are final.

Re: Fantasy League 2016 - Winter/Spring Session - Warmup Event - Tournament of Champions
In one week last year (or it may have been two) I picked by the numbers. They did well for me, although not winning. I stuck by those numbers for the rest of the season and it pretty well ran downhill. So I'm not going to do the numbers game - unless I am away - and see how my judgement fares. I expect it will be just as bad, or worse. Anyway Grumps thanks for doing this and hope you had a good break.

Cutting it very fine there Owen. Kaufman would have tee'd off but not probably finished his first hole.

I literally saw the tournament was on sky sports at 11 and it reminded me that this was likely starting up again! If Kaufmann was late then I'll take Padraig no complaints.

The last two players on the course went into the last hole tied for the lead with three others and then those two moved ahead into first and second spot. Patrick Reed's eagle saw him take a one shot lead over his Ryder Cup partner Jordan Spieth who made birdie. Reed's round of 65 was the lowest and that earned points for 1GrumpyGolfer, Beninho, BobtheJob, Eyetoldyouso, Kwinigolfer, Pedro, SetupDetermines, and SirBenson. 1GrumpyGolfer also had Spieth in his picks so he moved ahead of most of the bunch with Reed. Kwinigolfer had one, Brandt Snedeker, of the two picks that shot 67 that rounded out the Top 5 Low Round scores and he's tied for the lead. Davie had Spieth and Snedeker and he joins the chasing pack. BlueCoverman, LadyPutt, McLaren, and Super_Realist all picked Spieth to get off the mark while Owen10ozzy picked the other player to shoot 67, Danny Lee, to join the Spieth group.

Surprisingly only six Fantasy Leaguers picked Jordan Spieth and thanks to his birdie on 18, for a 64, the low round score was his. This time five picks were among the Top 5 Low Round scores, which was 67 for the second day in a row, and almost everyone picked up points in round 2.
McLaren fared the best with three of his picks including Spieth picked up points. 1GrumpyGolfer, Davie, I'm Never Wrong, LadyPutt, SirBenson, and Super_Realist each had two picks score points; but I'm Never Wrong and SirBenson didn't have Spieth. BlueCoverman had Spieth and tops the list of points scores for those with one pick scoring.

The low score keeps improving day by day so, will someone shoot 62 on Sunday. The rate Jordan Spieth is going it's not that fanciful. The number of Fantasy Leaguers who pick the low round scorer are diminishing, this time just three, BobtheJob, Owen10ozzy, and SetupDetermines earn the extra bonus points from Brooks Koepka's round of 63.
With almost half of the field featuring in the Top 10 Low round scores significant numbers of bonus points were handed out in round 3 as all Fantasy Leaguers had at least two picks shoot 69 or lower. SirBenson had five of his six picks fo just that; Padraig Harrington was the one to miss out. 1GrumpyGolfer, BlueCoverman, Davie, Eyetoldyouso, McLaren, Pedro, and Raycastleunited all had four of their picks score. BobtheJob, Kwinigolfer, LadyPutt, SetupDetermines, and Super_Realist each had three picks score. Beninho, EmmDee57, I'm Never Wrong, and Owen10ozzy each had two picks score points.
Nineteen picks are in points scoring positions so plenty of points will be dished out after the final round is over. Has Spieth wrapped this up or will one of the chasing pack come out on top?

Re: Fantasy League 2016 - Winter/Spring Session - Warmup Event - Tournament of Champions
Thanks Kwini. Just wondering what people thought of the points in round 2? Nine more folks got points under the new format.
These are the updated pieces to the format/rules/scoring system:
Splitting season into 4 sessions (Winter/Spring, Spring/Summer, Summer/Autumn, Autumn/Winter) of approximately ten events
Points for worst round score and last place finish have been eliminated
Top 5 Low Round scores will be awarded in round two for no cut events and multiple course events
An increased numbers of events, not just WGC's, will get a weighted two rating
Multiple course events include the likes of the Farmers Insurance at Torrey Pines or the Alfred Dunhill at St Andrews, Kingsbarns, and Carnoustie.
Anything other thoughts/ideas before we kick this thing off for real? I'm thinking that the Fantasy League will kick off in Hawaii as the Johannesburg Open has approximately 1,000 players in it.

Sounds good to me Grumps.
Will the WGC matchplay be a counting event this year?

Go for it Grumps. I am up to my useless standard, so I don't think your changes will affect me.
Appreciate your efforts.
I have a suggestion or two......
Rules for Mac:- Speith can only be selected twice in any one session.
2 selections must be from outside the top three players listed in each section.

Sounds good to me Grumps, just make sure it's simple enough to ensure it's not too complicated to manage.

Re: Fantasy League 2016 - Winter/Spring Session - Warmup Event - Tournament of Champions
Tricky one, Mac, the Matchplay traditionally starts on a Wednesday and because of that all the preparation work gets squeezed. Previously I would have you pick the winners of the 32 matches and you would ride your winner as far as they went picking up points for each win. Even with less time to make picks it was relatively easy.
With the 16 groups I'd love for you to be able to pick the winner of each match in the groups and then select your group winner, if it's not obvious who it would be. If you were right with your group winner you would ride them as far as they went picking up more points for a win. With the draw not taking place until Monday it would put a lot of pressure on publishing and selecting match winners. To cut a long story short; I don't know, yet. We could discuss further closer to the time.

Excellent point. Picking in the top 3 in each section is just boring, unimaginative and cynical, and to think Mac once accused me of disrespect to Grumpy for choosing 'randomly'.

Good stuff Grumps. As it was a warm up I tried an experiment with my picks - didn't work.
All your suggestions sound good to me. Main thing is I think we should avoid any complicated rules that create a significant burden on you to administer. You do a great job already.
I thought 3 categories was enough... but looks like I'm never wrong wants 6 categories. Maybe you should employ I'm never wrong and super realist as your assistants to keep track of everyone's picks and verify sub categories?

We all have the freedom to choose who we want, so feel free to copy my picks if you want.

Of course Mac, but it's not really a reason to be boring and predictable.

???? No way did I say I want extra categories. I just think that Mac should put a bit more effort into it. His choices are boring and unimaginative. It was just my way of pointing it out. Do you not think so?
I have always said that whatever Grumpy decides to do is OK by me. He is running the game, his rules.

Re: Fantasy League 2016 - Winter/Spring Session - Warmup Event - Tournament of Champions
Talk about bitter. Is it better to go for "boring" picks that propel you to second in the league or random picks which don't?
I don't have the arrogance to assume I can rate a players chances of winning more accurately than the OWGR or PGAT standings.

Re: Fantasy League 2016 - Winter/Spring Session - Warmup Event - Tournament of Champions
Yes Mac, it's better to pick players which MIGHT spring a surprise or where you might have done a little research on, i.e. improving stats, equipment changes, coach changes, moving to short putter, type of course, length of course, previous performance on that course, weather, heat, humidity, injury, amount of travel, etc, that gives you a march on the other players that are taking part who just go route one like you do, picking that leftfield player, who skins the field and propels you to random wins gives much more satisfaction than picking the top 3 in each event, but then again, you've always been a glory hunter with everything you do, so why are we surprised?
You might as well just send all your events in right now and then come back in December and see how you did.

Super
I think you will find I do often take recent or current seasons form into account. There are often not many left field choices left in category 3 as you can pick players in the 100's of OWGR or the 500's.

Re: Fantasy League 2016 - Winter/Spring Session - Warmup Event - Tournament of Champions
and isn't that more interesting than picking 1,2,3 from every section?
I don't take these things enormously seriously, but if I was only picking 1,2,3 why bother at all? What fun is there in that?
I liked looking into seeing the likes of Kjeldsen return to form, then people like Broberg coming to the fore.

Tbh I find picking players in cat 1 & 2 harder than 3. Trends, form etc is much easier to assess in cat 3.

Super
I have never picked 1,2,3 from every section. I just don't see the value in trying to make unfounded predictions. The case to pick 3 from the top 5 in every category is usually pretty strong.
