I really hope he can get back to his best. I'd love to see that forehand firing again.

Excellent news. I guess if he still has problems this time he may well call it a day. I'm sure he'll be just looking for pain-free play to start with, with the results not important.

Really hope to see him back to his best - or at least something very close. The current Tour needs Delpo more than ever .... no doubt about that..... !!
Won't be easy after such a prolonged absence. There must surely be a cumulative effect each time he puts himself through the tough rehab process necessary to get back to any sort of competitive standard.

Great news.
Delpo and Soderling, if only they could of stayed healthy, they would crush Djoko left and right and leave him with 3-4 GS.

Re: Attention all Delpo Fans
No doubt the main thing is for him to get through the match pain-free, or fairly pain-free. The result is immaterial compared with how he FEELS. If he wins but feels awful it's hardly a good result.
He's always appeared to be a popular guy - not just with the fans but with the other players. Here's hoping....

The big man won! Quite handily too: 6-1 6-4.
Early days of course but an encouraging result.

Re: Attention all Delpo Fans
Excellent news. Post-match interview with JMDP makes no mention of any discomfort although he says his backhand needs some work.
Got a very winnable match up next and could go deep into this tournament.

Re: Attention all Delpo Fans
I always wonder about expecting too much when they've been out for this long. But obviously he will have practised lots etc.
Looking at the draw, he should really make the final. But obviously things don't work like that.
I am a big fan though, so hope he can get back to top form.

Re: Attention all Delpo Fans
JMDP says he's still only slicing his backhand although it's difficult to say whether that's down to a lack of confidence or continuing wrist problems. Still, at least he's out there again.

Re: Attention all Delpo Fans
The JMDP BH slice is quite the shot. The damage he did with it at IW 2013. He took out Murray and Djokovic and that BH slice took them by surprise.

Re: Attention all Delpo Fans
Has anyone seen any of his matches? I have read that he is only really using the slice backhand, but the forehand and serve are still there.
Will he have enough to beat Chardy?

No, he's been using DHBHs in his matches!

Re: Attention all Delpo Fans
Not exactly correct Lydian.... quote
Against Top 30 players, you can’t keep hitting slice backhands, so I tried to hit more two-handed backhands than yesterday. I’m still working on improving my backhand and staying with it in competition. It’s part of the recovery for my wrist.”
After yet another good win against Chardy
Onwards and upwards Delpo

Re: Attention all Delpo Fans
Don't know why you pulled me up on that point as I've actually watched his matches and said "he's been using them"...which he has. Guest82 said he was only using slice BHs which wasn't the case.
Yes he's not using DHBHs all the time, less than slice, and clearly the plan is to increase their frequency over time. But hey he's just beaten a very decent Top30 player in Chardy 63 62 so shows his level clearly has huge potential and his current slice/DHBH approach can more then be just workable. After all Steffi Graf won 22 GS with mainly a sliced BH...it's an underrated shot and hard to attack if done well, and JMDP has developed a more than useful shot there.
His ranking has gone from 1042 to 420!!

Re: Attention all Delpo Fans
It was not my intention to be confrontational Lydian only that JHDP had said after his previous match that he was using the slice more than he would have wanted, but yesterday it seemed he was using the DHBH a little more .. no more than that

Re: Attention all Delpo Fans
No worries HN, my reply wasn't worded well to be honest. Dark days for us Rafa fans...
I read this also about JMDP after his Chardy match:
Del Potro, once ranked No. 4 in the world but now No. 1,041 because of an 11-month layoff following two surgeries on his left wrist last year, will play unseeded American Sam Querrey in the semifinals.
In a sign of his growing confidence, del Potro relied more heavily on his two-handed backhand rather than the more dependable one-handed slice he used in his first two matches. Though admittedly fatigued, the 27-year-old Argentine dominated the court, moving fluidly and setting up his hallmark forehand down-the-line winners.
''He put me on the defensive and against these top 30 players you cannot use slice all the time,'' said del Potro, who also admitted to feeling less jittery than he did in his previous matches. ''I actually prefer to feel nervous to how I feel right now which is just tired.''

Re: Attention all Delpo Fans
Yep good show by Delpo after ages out of the game.
Bodes well for IW next up...if he can get a WC given his ranking which isn't good enough to get in Challengers yet!

Great to have him back. Particularly if Raonic is the future as DP looks like an extrovert version of Federer compared to the boreatronic Canadian

Oh I think you are being a bit harsh on Raonic banbrotam. He has worked hard to become pretty handy with his touch and feel around the net and he has pretty good movement around the court as well.
