board design
Rugby section redesign
Doing this from my mobile so apologies for any typos or mistakes!
We recently redesigned the board to the format you now see, which in my opinion is much, much better than the old subsection format we had.
We have had a few people ask for the subsections to be removed completely. What is everyones thoughts on this?
Basically, only the pub thread and any annoucements will be permantly at the top. Every other article will be in the main section.
It is up to you which you want. Please vote below - I will leave the poll open over the weekend.
Thanks

Is that true? I'm sure that when I go in to the International or Club section - which I forget to do most of the time - there are articles that haven't appeared on the main rugby board.

Re: Rugby section redesign
Right now, it's the off-season. There's going to be a slight paucity of news and it probably doesn't merit sub-sections
When the new season starts in August, I expect you are going to need a subsection for the Rugby World Cup.

Re: Rugby section redesign
Lucky - I think he means we'll have a little sub section for the pub and announcements, everything else will then be on the main bit, no international of club section for us to click into at all.

Re: Rugby section redesign
I think for boards such as football subsectioning is necessary due to the sheer weight of new articles. On the original 606 at least the volume was quite hefty.
I think most rugby posters are used to just a single section because the rate of new articles was slow enough to be able to keep up.
I don't bother looking at subsections too often to be honest.

Hobo - this whole consulting the users business is all terribly democractic and sensible. You'll never get a job at the BBC!

If that's what the proposal is, Dreamer, I'm all for it.

Re: Rugby section redesign
yeh, I agree with greybeard, the way forward for this website is for the football section to have it's own team sections, and perhaps this forum could be more like the old scrum v board and have a Welsh, English, Scottish, Irish boards or Magners, Aviva, T14, S14 sections to it,

Re: Rugby section redesign
Just means more pointless web browsing to have sections. Much easier to all keep it on one, the traffics nothing like enough to justify sections which will only increase duplicate threads since I assume youll have a "general" one anyway.

Re: Rugby section redesign
I personally don't see much wrong with the current setup.
When the new season starts having things split up won't do any harm.

Re: Rugby section redesign
My main point is that I don't want to miss a good rugby article because it's tucked away in a subsection. All new posts should appear on the general rugby page.

Re: Rugby section redesign
Good articles only ever got “swept away” on old 606 when some other big news broke (usually something to do with Henson), but from now on we can merge duplicate threads so nothing should be swept away anymore. I’m all about removing the subsections!

Re: Rugby section redesign
Old chestnuts keep coming back here which is part of the charm. The deadwood will drop off the bottom. There are not enough articles for the sections. I say merge them now, but open a section for the WC, 6n, lions as and when

Re: Rugby section redesign
Sounds logical to eliminate the sub-sections for the moment. Only create new sub-sections for the extraordinary events like the RWC and Lions. Frankly, I can't imagine any other reason for a sub-section beyond those.

Re: Rugby section redesign
I'd say there's not even a need for RWC subsections. Once the WC or 6N or whatever rolls around it's all we'll be talking about anyway.

The risk then is though that decent articles fall off tge bottom. You can't make everything a sticky.

Re: Rugby section redesign
But the point is the rate of new articles being created is quite slow. If the rate increases then you know you need subsections, but until that happens it's complicating things needlessly.
My 2c anyway, but I've been banging the single-section forum drum since I arrived

I like the way it is now. I don't particularly want to have to look the whole way down the page to find an article just because I haven't been on for a couple of hours.

I'd like the sub sections if those articles appeared on the main Rugby Union page as well.

Re: Rugby section redesign
I voted for "leave it the way it is" It's working. Only 2 x Gavin Henson articles, show Rugby-kind has evolved a smidgeon. This merging of simular articles, by the Mods, is a great idea. See how it pans out and then make adjustments later - by popular request.
The RWC and The Lions would need their own sections. They go mad when coming up to them.

yes, they do, but as we wouldn't be talking about anything else, they would also be the de facto 'general' section, anyway.

One section for rugby will suffice I think.

That would be fine. As it is its just pointless. Most articles are being posted in teh main section, with a the odd one appearing in the sub sections which have very low traffic.
If you want to browse everything its just irritating.

Re: Rugby section redesign
Okay - although the vote was very close, I have decided to drop the subsections altogether for the time being.
I might change this should the board get too article heavy.
I will review it as it goes along and may introduce them back in for the beginning of the next season and world cup.
I would ask you all to look out for any similar article when creating a new one.
And apologies to the mods who I asked this morning to move threads into the right sections! Instead, can we all look at merging them!
Lets give this a go.

Oops, I'd just moved half a dozen or so
I think one stand-alone section will work through to RWC time anyway
