Zverev looked so good against Paire, he looked like the one who had played years on tour although he is just 19. Very impressed with the poise of this guy although he did throw his racquet after an error on break point early in the second.

Zverev v. Monfils should be really enjoyable. Zverev has to use the initiative and go first ball hitting on Gael. That is all Zverev should do from no on for the rest of his career with that power and long levers. Very nice result for the youngster to get to the semis here and if he can go one step further it bodes really well for his development.

Very impressed with Gael, he seems to be playing much more focused and professional tennis right now and is really being more aggressive in court positioning than he has been in the past. Took care of Zverev who really never threatened him on serve.

A final thought for Ivo Karlovic - a forgotten hero that I honestly can't stand, but must begrudgingly respect:

Its very hard to watch a Karlovic or Isner for me, too few rallies and too many routine holds. We are seeing this surface play really quick, my gut instincts are that courts are a bit quicker now than they have been in the past. Maybe its the heat but the US hardcourts really seem to be favoring the big servers so far.

Two of the current best  returners H2H's are Andy Murray 7 -0 against Karlovic  and Novak Djokovic 2-1.

Andy against John Isner is 6-0 and against Milos Raonic 7-3,while Novak is 8-2 against Isner and 7-0 against Raonic

Proves that to beat these big servers you really have to be a good returner!

I read your Karlovic report - an interesting read OK

A minor suggestion - maybe you could modify the design slightly by putting the menu / margin on the right side rather than the left side - so one doesn't need to scroll right to get all the text of the article onto the screen.

Excellent win for Monfils, who moves up to 9th in the race. Hopefully he can get past Goffin and Raonic and pick up SF points in Canada.

As for Ivo, he got to 75 *54 up in the final and lost serve for the first time in the tournament. That defeat will hurt.

I thought that Monfils should have had it easier in this match but Ivo's serve basically puts him at 50/50 with almost anyone on a fast court, almost. And Washington, they say on the US broadcast that they have sped up the surface and that it was very hot this last week, was very quick. But Monfils was very slop in the two games he got broken early. Feel for Ivo, glad he came back after his meningitis. I still can't find this style of tennis compelling though, had to struggle through a match that scoreline wise should be entertaining.

Great post SL, fully agree. What I find interesting is how quick Washington was this week or how it was playing. I only watched a couple of matches but there were so many aces and easy holds. And you would have bet your house on Karlovic consolidating his break when serving for the match in the second set.

I wasn't aware that was a problem, but to be honest, I think it has something to do with the size of your screen and how the page is rendered by your browser, because I can't recreate it on Chrome, Safari or Firefox. Have you experienced this on bigger screens as well?
