Whither Boudjellal?
Don't really know what's up but my twitter timeline is full of speculation that Boudjellal will step down at the end of the season, and a guy called Lucien Simon is being tipped to be taking over at Toulon.
Unclear whether Boudjellal is retaining control, or selling up. Well, unclear to me, because I don't trust my French.

Re: Whither Boudjellal?
More information in todays print edition it seems. As far as I can tell Mourad has said he will step down as president at the end of the season but has denied that Lucien Simon will take over. No mention in that segment as to whether Mourad s selling up or not, just states he will not be President next year and that he is choosing his successor.

He's knackered. He's running it as owner and Chief Executive. He needs a break.
Re: Whither Boudjellal?
He's buying the Dragons. I thought everyone knew that?

Yep he feels like he's done his time. Not sure he will find a buyer though so might stay in the background.

An article in English, albeit not up to date with all the talk in France.

Re: Whither Boudjellal?
Wasn't there some talk that Toulon was thinking of doing something like creating a team in the US?
If that had a degree of truth in it, and if Boudjellal was the central character behind the thinking - maybe he just thinks he might now want to move on completely and bring his brand of success to the US where they might have less vigilance on alleged links to drugstores?

Now now Fly, surely everybody has a couple of pre-signed blank perscriptions at the local drug store in case one needed to pick up a little something. Harmless stuff really.
Sounds like Mourad is burnt out from driving the club on single handedly. Kind of like when Elwood try to do too many roles at Connacht. It could only last so long.
He has a passion for his club which should be admired. If he steps back as President, does he keep CEO? If he steps back altogether does he let the profits each year back into the club? Also, will he invest more of his money into the club?
Some interesting times ahead.

Re: Whither Boudjellal?
From that article it sounds like - as with many club owners that he is bleeding too much cash into it.
Finally decided that his coffers aren't bottomless and doesn't feel that his squad are as committed to the club as he is.
However, if Toulon were top of the table and smashing all comers then I don't think there would be a story - Mourad seems to be a rather reactionary fellow, and this could be his was of incentivising his squad.

I thought Toulon was self funding and he hadnt put any money into it over the last few years?

That was my understanding also. Good sponsorship, merchandise sales, TV deals and sell outs were supposed to be providing all the cash for them to operate.

Re: Whither Boudjellal?
Well he mentioned in the article that his fortune wasn't bottomless - that to me suggests that there is a financial strain on running the club.

Re: Whither Boudjellal?
Gavin Mortimer's tweets suggest Toulon will be sold. He wrote this recently for Rugby World.

...Is Boudjellal just playing games? Many sceptics in France believe so, and say he will never relinquish the stake he acquired a decade ago. What about all the players he is chasing for next season, they say? Chris Ashton has allegedly already agreed terms; Israel Dagg is poised to do the same; Ma’a Nonu has been discussing an extension with his club president, as has Bryan Habana. Hardly the behaviour of a man about to bail.
But, according to Midi Olympique, Boudjellal will recruit heavily in the coming months so that his legacy is a world-class squad. That will mean reflected glory for him if they win titles in the seasons to come, while also putting pressure on his successor to meet the stars’ salaries.
That’s why he’s playing hardball with Gerard Barba and Lucien Simon, the two men tipped to become the next owners of Toulon. According to reports, the three men and their legal teams have met three times in recent weeks and a fourth discussion is scheduled for this Thursday...
