What position are you?
Positions. What are/were you?
Quite simply, let's just try and see how many of each position we've got here. I'm bored, and I'm counting on all of you to distract me from exams. As I said, nothing serious, I'm just interested to see how many of each we've got. Cheers.

Re: Positions. What are/were you?
I picked waterboy although to be honest, I would much rather have had an option of watergirl
Never played the game myself, they didn't start teaching girls rugby in school till I was about to start 6th form and had developed a complete hatred against my PE teacher!

Re: Positions. What are/were you?
I have played such diverse positions as Tighthead, Loosehead, Hooker, Wing(!) and No8. All were at school, and I played in only the front row positions for low-level school teams.
The No8 and wing excursions took place during inter-house leagues for non-school-team players. Ironically, when I played No8 I was joint captain of the side and we won the league. At the time (aged 15) I stood a lofty 5ft 6 inches...
I have not played since 1989...

Started out on the wing then as age got the better moved to inside centre then finally onto blindisde.
Have ventured up to 2nd row once but that was enough forward for me.

My position through most of school was second row although after a non rugby related knee problem caused me to miss a season when I returned everyone had grown other than me and I was no longer one of the tallest so I got moved to flanker.

I put myself down as a winger, but in reality I was a utility back - useless in every position

I seemed to spend all of my time being too tall for the front row, too short for the second row, and too slow for the back row ...

Re: Positions. What are/were you?
well nice to be here, HELLO TO EVERYONE
i have played every position in the forwards, started off when i was 6 as hooker, then to prop then to 2nd row and eventually i now find myself as a blindside flanker, which is may favourite on of the lot, although i dont mind playing 8.

Re: Positions. What are/were you?
Evening!
I started as a Flanker (wing forward in those days). Then people in the pack got bigger somehow over the years. So I moved to IC where I now generally play. Sometimes I nip inside to 10, but just for fun.
Got two lads. My 12 year old is a Hooker and Prop. My 14 year old splits time between Openside and Fly Half.

Started out as a wing, then slowly moved in towards the fatboys, at OC , IC then at 10, with a short venture to 15.

Re: Positions. What are/were you?
I've not played since leaving school really except the odd game here and there for mates teams. At school I started out as scrum half as I was one of the smaller lads, but after losing a few players injured in one game I ended up at hooker. Played there for a bit and really enjoyed it as despite my size I have more of a forwards mentality, before ending up at full back and then retiring upon leaving school at 18.

Ireland
Played Loosehead prop mainly from age of 11 to 21
Occasionally filled in at tighthead for school/club
England
Lost my 'prop' bulk playing soccer/running etc when I first came to England then played rugby (mid 90's) for a few seasons in Kent League, basically wherever the team needed me, blindside flanker mostly(even played centre once!!).....but never as effective as I was at being a prop!
Injury and old age have pretty much put an end to my contact sport days so i am a watcher rather than a player these days.

Started out at centre for the underage levels.
Played most of my senior rugby accross the back row.
Playing vets now and limited to playing 6 as the legs are not there anymore.
My 2 boys are playing u11 and u12 at IC and FH.

I played left wing at school. I reckon I could have run the show at ten if I'd had the chance, but our PE teacher had his favourites and I wasn't among them!

Hmmmm, either we have no members at 8 - or more likely they keep hitting their keyboards with their heads and selecting the wrong position.
Seven for me incidentally, a devastatingly average one at that.

FB - Great Boot & positional awareness and speed that was a cross between Tindall and Ryan Jones. At half time in one match our coach said I turned like a double decker bus when I had the ball

Re: Positions. What are/were you?
Started at Full back but I thought i was supposed to be like a goal keeper in football, got moved to wing but I couldnt run, moved to centre but I couldnt tackle, they stuck me at flanker but i kept giving penalties away, they moved me to hooker but i couldnt throw stright into the lineout, so they put me at tight head prop!
All this is true

second row and no8,mostly second row,had a decent run, played until about 29,my work then took me away from home quite a bit, so that was that, only fond memories left and a few lifelong friendships.

Re: Positions. What are/were you?
I used to play touch rugby with my brothers (who were both older and therefore always bigger than me ). This was very much in the days when girls didn't play rugby.
Organised a "match" between a group of girls at uni against the local student nurses. I decided I was going to play FH because I had organsied it and it seemed that the FH had the most fun. Game descended into an hilarious form of chaos which everyone enjoyed.
And then we went to the pub (Kiely's in Donnybrook, if anyone ever heard of it). You see, even in those far off days (this was about the time fergus slattery gothis first cap for Ireland) we KNEW how rugby players did it ...

Re: Positions. What are/were you?
First five for me after earlier runs on the openside, halfback and centre. Unfortunately my age and global positioning in Auckland during the 80's put me smack in the middle of the Fox's, Kirwans, Mccahills and Brooke eras. Played with and against (and got on the p&**s with), many of the them at club and age level though.
Was lucky to be coached and discuss the game at length over the years at Otahuhu with Mac Herewini and Waka Nathan, our then most famous All Black. Mealamu is up there with him now...oh and that reminds me... in Sydney after the Bledisloe cup in 1987 (won just after the World cup with Fitzy scoring out on the wing).. spent the entire evening talking to Fred Allen about rugby through the years. Truly memorable. A great man.
Very disheartened about the defragmentation of Auckland Rugby since I left for Wellington in 2000.

Taylorman,
Are you saying that you were playing loosie and up popped Zinny to block your path?
You moved to halfback and then Kirky moved north?
Thought you would move out one and then up jumped Fox?
One more and there was McCahill?
I imagine by the time you got to centre you saw smokin Jo comin into his prime and a bloke called Bunce about to transfer to harbour and you thought "Fxxx this". Time to retire!
Only Joking!!!!

Re: Positions. What are/were you?
didn't play top level club rugby, but at school played eigthman, then at Edenvale Rugby club played flank, and then transferred to loose head.
My favorite position was flanker. you get more involved in the game, being prop really stuffed up my knees.

I was on the right wing, playing for the 3rd team. Apart from a couple of try saving tackles I was pretty hopeless. Haven't played since school.

Re: Positions. What are/were you?
Stand off for school (captain) and fullback for club (captain) and county. Wouldn't be big enough for either in today's game probably but technique got me through in those happy days.

Best match I ever played they it was our clubs U16 vs U17 but fowards and backs had to swap positions there is no sweeter site than a prop playing on the wing

Started on the wing and played 12 and 13 a lot after that.I much preferred 12 as I was never the quickest and found defending much easier there.
Played fullback a few times and was pretty solid defensively but completely lost in attack,I'd say I only ever got the ball from opposition kicks when I played there.

I started off at hooker, then eight. Eventully found myself at tighthead prop, before losing a bit of flab and finding my true home at openside.
I've posted a few horror stories on 606 about my brief journey to the wing ... never again.
