Anthony Kendrick (@Antonthology) and Nick Davie (@Nick_Davie) return for the latest episode of The 72 Show. In this show, we focus on the FA Cup and Transfer Deadline Day.
We start by discussing Sutton United and Lincoln City, the two remaining non-league sides. They both continued their FA Cup runs with victories over Championship sides Leeds and Brighton. Both sides put out weakened teams which gives rise to the argument that the FA Cup magic is not only gone for the Premier League sides but to some FL72 sides as well. Other FA Cup results included Milwall beating Watford, Oxford United beating Newcastle and Wolverhampton Wanderers' incredible 2-1 victory at Anfield.
The draw brought up the tie that Sutton United wanted, a home game against Arsenal. There is talk that the game may be moved but would this be the right thing? The other ties from the fifth round on TV are Burnley vs Lincoln, Wolves vs Chelsea, Fulham vs Tottenham and Blackburn vs Man Utd.
We then move on to discuss Transfer Deadline Day, along with the other major January transfers. Scott Hogan joined Aston Villa from Brentford when he was linked to Premier League clubs and German side RB Leipzig. He was joined by Henri Lansbury who joins from Nottingham Forest, who have brough in Zach Clough, Ross McCormack and Joao Teixera. Wigan also had a busy deadline day, with former Man Utd academy manager Warren Joyce signing Ryan Tunnicliffe, James Weir, Alex Bruce and Gabriel Obertan. Omar Bogle also comes in after scoring 19 goals for Grimsby this season.
Our transfer round-up also includes the controversy of Matty Taylor joining Bristol Rovers from Bristol City, along with Theo Robinson moving to Southend from Lincoln City. Shola Ameobi is on trial at Notts County and Leyton Orient's Ulrich Nnomo is not allowed by FIFA rules to join Paris FC on loan despite all parties being happy for the transfer to go ahead.
To finish the show we cover some of the other stories from the football league, including Nigel Clough staying at Burton Albion, Scunthorpe moving to the top of League One after winning their last three games, and Notts County's player-manager Kevin Nolan.
