2017 and 2018 World Snooker Championship Thread
First topic message reminder :
I am surprised no topic up here yet for the World Championship so here goes a few days too late.
Mark Selby looks like a good bet for a third world title. Where will the main challenge come from? Perhaps Judd Trump, John Higgins, Ding Junhui and Ronnie O'Sullivan.
Selby looked very good in his opening match as did Higgins. O'Sullivan's mental demons have resurfaced again in time for The Crucible and will need to improve to win again.
Thoughts?

And it is Williams who takes the frame to level it up at 14-14 as they head to their mid-session interval.

If Williams takes this next frame he will lead for the first time in the match. How would Hawkins react to that?

Hawkins holds his nerve and takes the 29th frame and goes back ahead 15-14.

Both have had their surprising misses but some fabulous safety exchanges at the moment.

The Hawk picks out a plant and has a chance to take the frame.

Wow after playing a great pot on the black Hawkins misses an easy red but gets away with it. Advantage Hawkins with a 30+ lead as we move into another safety exchange.

Hawkins underhits a red and leaves Williams in with a chance to get back into the frame.

Williams misses a sitter of a blue off its spot. Hawkins in again with a chance to go two up with three to play.

A cracking positional shot off the black and Williams on the brink of taking the frame.

And Williams takes the frame to level it up at 15-15. A late night thriller at The Crucible.

Williams looking the stronger just now and builds a lead of almost 30 points before playing safe. Questions being asked of The Hawk's temperament and nerve now.

Williams in again and he's edging closer to taking the frame and going into the lead in the match for the first time at 16-15. But runs out of position on a colour with a lead of 47 points. He plays safe and is in the boxseat.

A marathon 31st frame is clinched by Mark Williams. He lead in the match for the first time. He needs one more frame to reach his 4th World Final.

After Hawkins win over Ding, I thought that maybe this was Hawkins opportunity to shine. He is 39 and it is not clear how many opportunities he will get.

And Williams reciprocates by overcutting a pink on 19. Can Hawkins take this chance to force a deciding frame.

But runs out of position and snookers himself on the reds. Big mistake. He is in trouble here. He does lead by 28 with three reds left on the table.

A long red missed by Hawkins. A great chance for Williams here but as Angles says that is an awful shot. He can't get onto a colour and he has to play a snooker.

He hits the red but goes in off. Another four points away and leads by 9. Williams wobbles a long red in the jaws. Hawkins breathes again.

Good hit from Hawkins though and Williams misses it to give away 4 points. A final frame decider looms closer.

Sounds very tense. Not clear who is going to win. Hawkins has yet to win a triple crown tournament - is he one of the best snooker players yet to win one?

Williams slack safety knocks the red close to the pocket. Chance Hawkins. Pots the red but no position on a colour. However, he looks a good bet to take the frame.

Another safety exchange on this green. And the next chance falls to Mark Williams. And he nails the long green and pots the brown.

Pots the blue and pink is tight on the cushion is it a double or safety. A double it is but misses but runs relatively safe.

Ding has won three triple crown tournaments (2 x UK + 1 x Masters). Maybe Judd Trump outranks Hawkins in terms of best player not to win one of these - but he is only 28. Maybe there are a few around Barry Hawkins (e.g. Joe Perry).

And pots it and he pots the black to reach the final. Superb match. Well played Mark Williams. You have to feel for The Hawk. Classic match that ends ten minutes to midnight.

I was thinking more of best not to win the biggest title - the world title. That is what they all strive for.
