Surrey CCC 2019 Discussion Thread
After over 10000 views and 310+ articles spread over seven pages (which you have to scroll thro one by one on an i-phone) I've decided it's time we moved on from the 2016 thread to this year. Here we go...

No news on Stoneman, unless our inside reporter Guildford has any!

Re: Surrey CCC 2019 Discussion Thread
Borthwick rejoining Durham is reported as ''likely'' by Will Macpherson in tonight's London Standard. Macpherson is right more often than he's wrong.
I hadn't heard any whisper of this before today. I haven't heard anything about Stoneman either. However, the two are buddies and so it's not impossible one would want to follow the other. Stoneman being dropped (and he was dropped) for the current Bob Willis match and him not often being in the t20 side might encourage him to want away.
My take below.
Borthwick hasn't been a flop but equally hasn't delivered as much as wanted or expected. Stoneman had a great first season with us and deservedly won an England call up but has too often been disappointing since then. However, if either of them are to go, we will desperately need to recruit some batsmen over the winter. We don't have enough in the squad as it is.

This is absolutely disgraceful one friendly and a reduced t20 game for the year.
At least Dick Turpin wore a mask.

Hi JimBob - I'll comment when I get the Club's letter to members. Cheers.

Hi again JimBob - I've now had a read of the letter. I accept the Club have obviously incurred some expenditure this season and have also battled hard to get cricket back on. However, what they are refunding seems low. I say ''seems'' - and this is what particularly hacks me off - as the Club haven't given any proper explanation as to why the percentage figure of 25 has been chosen. Why not 33%? Or 50%? Just possibly (although I doubt it) 25% is on the generous side and 20% might have been more appropriate. However, as I say, without a proper explanation there is no way of knowing.
The Club like to pride themselves as being transparent and open. They've fallen down badly here.
Assuming you are planning to renew, one thing I would flag is that you might want to hold off paying your 2021 membership until either the Covid virus has gone away (which doesn't look likely too soon) or the Club say what they will do with our 2021 membership fees if we again see next to no cricket. The Club had no way of foreseeing the pandemic this year; however, it's unfortunately a clear possibility for next year and the Club should face up to that and communicate what might happen. The vouchers for the odd pie and a pint at the Oval that they're planning to give us a ''thank you for renewing'' will be worth zilch if we can't get in the ground!
I won't be renewing until I know more. If you pay by direct debit, you might want to consider cancelling it but that's your call.

Even though Borthwick didn't (fully) live up to expectations and even though we've signed Evans, we still need to strengthen the batting.

I wouldn’t say it’s a smash hit, but more a solid addition. He’s been a solid operator for a while now, more consistent than his younger, quicker days. Should enjoy early season conditions

He's highly regarded at the Oval. Looks like Surrey's top six for the Championship opener at Bristol will be the same as here with Smith keeping Jacks and Evans on the sidelines.
PS JimBob - good to catch a glimpse of you lurking in the shadows and no doubt ready to fully reappear on Wednesday.

I'm assuming Rikki Clarke is not in contention. Not sure if he's got an injury or is just out of favour. I understand he wasn't a happy chap at the end of last season.

Interesting note re: Clarke, Guildford. Did wonder if he might be "phased out" this year with the addition of Overton late last year...

Re: Surrey CCC 2019 Discussion Thread
In the current second XI Championship game at Guildford (not allowed to attend even though I would be outside and more isolated than almost anywhere else!!), Surrey are 46/5 in reply to Yorks' 344 all out.
Patel made 2 and a couple of duck eggs for Jacks and Evans. Of the batsmen, JimBob's boy Nico Reifer top scored with 18 although that has been equalled by Extras! Another JimBob protege Ben Geddess now at the crease.

Apart from Geddes who has just scored another 50

He probably stayed at the Oval a couple of years too long for his benefit and ours but good luck to the guy. He always seemed to try his best and bought Bat Girl 1 a glass of champagne within minutes of meeting her!

I've nothing against him personally! Just think he's been very over rated for a while now, but good luck to him in the future!

Not seen the article but just heard that Will Macpherson reported this in the Standard. Macpherson usually knows how many beans make five!
Stoneman was most prolific for us in his first two years when he won his England call up but his departure now is still a big loss. Not only still a usually reliable county opener but a player who is unlikely to be lost to the Hundred or any of the world wide T20 tournaments for chunks of the season. Smart signing in all the circumstances by Middlesex.

Slightly odd one that.
As goochie says, C de G is a decent player. We're able to sign him now as Roach is crocked but he's in no way a direct replacement. I suspect we tried first of all to sign C de G's fellow Kiwi Jamieson again but he wasn't available.
Incredibly and ludicrously, Sam Curran might be rested on ECB orders for the Gloucs match coming up this week, according to Will Macpherson in today's Standard. C de G would be an ideal and probably superior replacement for Sam.
Dan Worrall is also here now after family issues in Australia. He's a far lesser bowler than Roach but could well come into the side with Taylor pulling up injured last time out and Topley not often playing two matches on the reel.
The other bowler possibly in contention at Gloucs is Virdi. He's not injured as far as I know and not playing in the current stiffs' game which suggests he's with the first team squad.

He was though classed as ''you're welcome to him'' by Gloucs supporters at the Oval late last season after his signing had been announced.

You would have to assume Amla is retiring (?) - will be 40 next season. Patel should be re-signed either way, a very handy cricketer who's developed well, would be a massive shame to see him leave.
