Wawrinka injured, ends 2017 season
The Stanimal will not defend his US Open title due to knee surgery.
I'm sure we'll all join in wishing one of the most likeable characters on the tour a speedy recovery.
Crazy for the big 5 at the USO - no Djokovic and now Wawrinka. (Thanks NNB for pointing out Murray has not pulled out of the USO yet.)
Cilic is out of Montreal. Kyrgios retired at Washington.

He added: "After talking with my team and doctor I had to make a difficult decision to undergo a medical intervention on my knee. This was the only solution to make sure I will be able to compete at the top level for many more years.
"This is obviously extremely disappointing, but I am already looking ahead and planning my recovery. I love this sport and I will work hard to get back to my top level and play many more years."
Interesting the use of "many" I wonder if that really his plan (I guess it is). Alternatively is that he just wants to say that so people (mainly media) will stop pestering him with retirement questions.
I did wonder, 32, injury at that age, already sacrified family for tennis before, why keep doing it. Legacy so secure.
Perhaps it's the money for himself and other family. He's isn't in the mega mega rich status perhaps that already has enough money and wants to ensure a very good standard of living for the rest of his life.

Well we don't know yet whether Murray is going to be pulling out of the USO - maybe you have been influenced by all the noise I have created over his hip issue. The latest news is Murray is doing some sort of aquatics aerobics as well as hitting a ball against a wall. Aquatics aerobics is a treatment sportspeople (and horses) use when they have either joint issues (such as the hips) or want to do some hard aerobic work without risking joints.reckoner wrote:... You're right, a casual scan of the latest on this made me think he was out for the season like Nole. Thanks, I'll edit my original post.

Well, he's still young and playing better than ever before after leaving his wife. Probably wants to step out of Federer's shadow and win a couple more before he hangs up his racquet. Or perhaps it just keeps the new girlfriend impressed.

Take a bow, Magnus (for making Wawrinka, what he is).

The last time I checked some guy 4 years older than Stan won 2 slams this year.
So, yeah. Stan is young.

Talking about withdrawals (and age), Rafa Eyes No. 1 In Montreal After Murray Withdrawal.
FedAl continue marching where others seem to be tottering. A well-managed calendar is good for both of them.

I suppose the silver lining in the way 2017 has played out is we finally get the possibility of Federer v Nadal at the US Open.

The following is an elite athlete deciding to take hip surgery (medical intervention?) and the rest of the year out in an attempt to help extend his sporting career.
