the greatest musical artist from Hero's 160 subjectively chosen musical artists of the last 100 years
I'm contemplating running a tournament in which 160 of the greatest musical artists of the past 100 years are pitted against each until eventually a winner is decided. It'd be run in group stages with the top two from each group progressing etc similar to other voting tournaments we've run on here.
Picking though the initial 160 musical acts is not an easy feat especially with the wide range of musical tastes, I'm limiting it to the last 100 years as I think it's a step too far to bring in the likes of Mozart etc. I need though your help in picking the 160 acts. Please check through the list below and let me know ones I've missed that you think should be included (with justification as to why) or ones that you think shouldn't be in there (and not just because you don't like them)
Cheers!

Ignore Dagless, he's started making up names.
John Cougar Mellencamp deserves a place though.

Just did a random draw on the list so far to see what groups are like and this one turned up:
1. The Smiths
2. Rolling Stones
3. Bob Marley
4. Dr Dre
5. Beatles
Think people would forget about Dre.

I'd take out Kanye West, keep Dre and add NWA.

Tough one, as Straight Outta Compton and The Chronic are both iconic albums in their own right.
Also, The Dead Kennedy's had one good song. Bon Jovi had 3, maybe 4.

Re: the greatest musical artist from Hero's 160 subjectively chosen musical artists of the last 100 years
I've removed Lennon/McCartney to just retain the Beatles, also don't have a double up on Wham/George Michael so it's just the one of Dre and NWA.
Akin to George Michael & Wham I'd personally be considering Dre's work in NWA when I voted.

In that case maybe put Paul Simon instead of S & G.
As an aside, there is a hairstylist near where I live called Simon Paul. If I had the money I'd open up a gallery next door and call it Garfunkel Art.

I'd agree that NWA as a collective were more influential than Dre.

Paul Simon (& Garfunkel)
Dr Dre (& NWA)

I think Dire Straits probably deserve to be in and Phil Collins based on sales alone.
Why don't you just go for the 128 best selling?

Best selling doesn't always translate to best artist.
DJ Khaled, Justin Bieber and PSY are the most viewed musical videos of all time, I don't think anyone would wish to vote for them as best musical video.

Going to up it to 160 artists initially so that I can then do 32 groups of 5 with the top two going through from each group.

Okay I now have 160 entrants.
Unless there's an outcry of a number of people wanting someone in/out then it's a done deal and I'll kick off the groups on Monday.

Popular in South America and parts of Asia, Jules.
Some big ones in that list... some of which you have already noted. Were Suzie Quatro and Linda Ronstadt big in the UK? Both sold tens of millions of records worldwide and were quite popular here... as well. I'm glad I didn't mention The Bangles or The Buggles though. No A-ha I see.

Each day when I post the polls I'll try to also include a link to one of the artists most famous tracks so that anyone who perhaps isn't aware of that artist can hopefully listen and make more of an informed choice.

Don't listen to Julius, he's had too many cream horns.
You should add a few bands with revolting names, in uppercase, to appeal to SerialDAVE if he's still alive. And getting rid of the Beatles might lure Jeff back. And I know that Tino is a big fan of Menudo.

Why don't you just go for the 128 best selling?
Best selling doesn't always translate to best artist.
DJ Khaled, Justin Bieber and PSY are the most viewed musical videos of all time, I don't think anyone would wish to vote for them as best musical video.
It depends very much on your definition of best. Either way it's going to be subjective. I was just offering you a way to select your initial participants without all the nonsense. If you don't want to take it shove it up your @rse. Besides which your thread is titled greatest not best your mahoosive c0ckwomble.
Perhaps you should rename this "the greatest musical artist from Hero's 160 subjectively chosen musical artists of the last 100 years".
and, and, and whoever chooses to watch DJ Khaled, Justin Bieber and PSY musical videos may well wish to vote for them as best musical video else I'm not sure why they'd watch them.
