Beauden Barrett wins world player of the year award!!
First topic message reminder :
https://www.worldrugby.org/news/293375
Shortlist:
BEAUDEN BARRETT (NEW ZEALAND)
The 26-year-old could become only the second player to win the prestigious accolade two years in a row after another impressive season in the All Blacks No.10 jersey. He celebrated his 50th test against Samoa with a two-try, 24-point haul and a piece of All Blacks history alongside his brothers, and finished the Lions series as top point scorer with 41. The attack-minded fly-half, who is equally at home at full-back, continued to torment defences with his instinctive play and captained the All Blacks for the first time in the non-capped victory over the Barbarians earlier this month.
OWEN FARRELL (ENGLAND AND LIONS)
Another player nominated for the second year running and third time in total, Farrell continued to pull the strings for England and the Lions at inside centre in 2017. He started all five tests in England’s victorious Six Nations campaign, reaching 50 caps for his country against Italy in February and breaking through 600 test points in the final round loss to Ireland. The 26-year-old also started the three tests on the Lions tour of New Zealand, the first of them at fly-half, and contributed 31 points in the drawn series.
ISRAEL FOLAU (AUSTRALIA)
The oldest of the nominees at 28, Folau has been back to his scintillating best in 2017. The full-back came into the year without a try in his previous 11 tests, but rediscovered his scoring touch to set a new Australian record for tries in a calendar year with 12 in his 10 tests, failing to cross the line in only two matches. The first Wallaby to score doubles in three consecutive tests back in June, he was joint top try-scorer in the Rugby Championship and will be missed on their end of year tour after electing to take a break after a long season.
RIEKO IOANE (NEW ZEALAND)
Ioane, the youngest of the nominees at only 20, is also nominated for the World Rugby Breakthrough Player of the Year award having made the All Blacks starting left-wing spot his own following a two-try haul in his first test start against the British and Irish Lions in June. He then shared the top try-scoring honour in the Rugby Championship after topping the charts for defenders beaten, clean breaks and metres made, and arrives in Europe with a record of eight tries in as nine starts this year.
MARO ITOJE (ENGLAND AND LIONS)
The Breakthrough Player of the Year in 2016, Itoje is nominated for this prestigious award for the second year running after continuing his impressive form in 2017. Deployed at blindside flanker, rather than second-row, throughout England’s victorious Six Nations campaign, his performances ensured his place on the British and Irish Lions tour to New Zealand. He came off the bench in the first test and earned a starting spot in the second-row for the remaining tests.
Winner: Barrett

Barrett didnt make the short list.
Thats because he cost you a lions win, but world rugby said thank you Barrett.
Whats probably a lot closer to the truth, is that you can be the best player in the World but that doesn't make you the best player in New Zealand.
But I do note that the Kiwi posters on here were way ahead of Gwlad when it came to making accurate discerning assessment of the World top players.
NZ isn't in the world then.....thanks for the perfect illustration not only of Kiwi ignorance but arrogance
You appear to be the only one that thinks New Zealand isnt in the World.....
Me and you then because you just said that bb can be the best player in NZ but not the world.
And now Ive just realized that you dont even understand that your non sequitur (look it up) reveals your ignorance.
Never said Beauden Barrett was the best player in New Zealand,he could be in the opinion of some, but for me, Sam Whitelock was well ahead.

You clearly did because when I posted about BB losing the Lions tour you referred to the best player in the world -which apparently is BB - who was slammed in NZ and not shortlisted. Your clumsy non sequitur about NZ rugby not being the same as World Rugby is what started it. BB errors cost you the Lions tour and World Rugby had a chuckle and said thanks. Ignorance showing up again on your part but I would expect you to understand your own posts?
Got it now or do you need a more basic explanation?

In my opinion Sam Whitelock has the been best New Zealand player, an opinion that I have expressed prior to the annual New Zealand Rugby awards, when a number of much smarter Rugby minds than yours, confirmed Sam Whitelock as the best New Zealand player of the year.

Yes the timeframes are also a factor. We have a 2017 award, not a hybrid 'part of the end of 2016 and most of 2017 but not the end part' award.
Its perhaps our common sense that allows us to see things more clearly

It fascinates me the way you always turn to insult because it frustrates you so much that you dont understand us Kiwis, but whats even more humourous is that you never will. Have a good sleep Gwlad.

So gwlad thinks Barrett won WR player of the year because he cost the ABs the Lions series and the gong was a reward from the ‘World’ for making the ABs lose.
I think it’s fair to say gwlad has just achieved ‘peak moron’. That’s a special achievement

A ‘decent performance’ from gwlad, the infamous moral Welsh victory You want so desperately to be significant or represent something significant, but alasGwlad wrote:ebop wrote:So gwlad thinks Barrett won WR player of the year because he cost the ABs the Lions series and the gong was a reward from the ‘World’ for making the ABs lose.

Re: Beauden Barrett wins world player of the year award!!
Good to see Same Cane named in the Planet Rugby side. Obviously Portia Woodman is the interesting one though.
Fair side though I wouldn't have Mako for his dual failed head hunts on Barrett.
Whitelock and Itoje at lock...fair call. And a Lions 9 and midfield...also fair.
Standout players for me for 2017 out of this lot:
Ioane
Woodman
Itoje
Marx
The Planet Rugby XV for 2017:
15 Stuart Hogg (British & Irish Lions, Scotland and Glasgow), 14 Portia Woodman (New Zealand women), 13 Jonathan Davies (British & Irish Lions, Wales and Scarlets, 12 Owen Farrell (British & Irish Lions, England and Saracens, 11 Rieko Ioane (New Zealand and Blues), 10 Beauden Barrett (New Zealand and Hurricanes), 9 Conor Murray (British & Irish Lions, Ireland and Munster), 8 Kieran Read (New Zealand and Crusaders), 7 Sam Cane (New Zealand and Chiefs), 6 Siya Kolisi (South Africa and Stormers), 5 Sam Whitelock (New Zealand and Crusaders), 4 Maro Itoje (British & Irish Lions, England and Saracens), 3 Tadhg Furlong (British & Irish Lions, Ireland and Leinster), 2 Malcolm Marx (South Africa and Lions), 1 Mako Vunipola (British & Irish Lions, England and Saracens).

Another example of how those who know one iota about rugby call BB as a Player of the Year after his Workd Rugby win while ebop thinks he is average. Ebop doesn't recognize class because he has to look at his own reflection every day

Yeah bit strange overall. Must just be picked on senior sides outstanding players rather than best players around. I'm aware of the south African custom in flanker short numbers but isn't kolisi more of a 7?

Yes she was very good, stood up one of outs a couple of times too. Pipped by Woodman as Female player of the year. In fairness Woodman is the nearest to looking like a 'man' on the field if thats how to describe it.
Having AB wingers Fred and Kawhena Woodman as pop and Uncle must help I suppose.

My concern here is that Im not convinced he is a head coach as opposed to a good backs/attack coach, its been a couple of years since Wayne Pivac left and I thought he was pretty on to it, and Alama is probably the best appointmant since wayne.
Yeah lots of ex Welly midfield backs coaching around this town, Pita Alatini is coaching Pakuranga.

What has this got to do with BB being World Player of the yer and recently named in Planet Rugby's team of the year? Nothing.

Apart from Foxy being a craftsman of rugby, Steve McDowell is the only one that immediately springs to mind, I think he is scrum coach for Georgia or Romania or some random European country. Wont mention JK.

Merry Christmans beauden, I hope by next year ebop will be able to recognize a great player when he sees one or indeed have any undertanding at all. And don't worry about losing the Lions tour for your team, the world appreciates you for it even if your countrymen dont.

BBC fans pick Barrett at 10 yet again for Team of the Year.....just excellent to see how those who know rugby recognize class. Shame he has been treated so poorly at home

Biggest joke is Vunipola at prop, when he can`t scrummage worth a damn,a props core role.

7 Irish in the top 100, not a bad return but I am really surprised that Murray is only at 21. I would have him easily in the top 10 and as the best 9 in the world.

I would have thought that the best All Black of the year might also have made it into the top 10.

Like it or not Owen Franks is noted for his Scrummaging ability[refer to Wikipedia for confirmation.Sam Whitelock
is the most underated lock in world rugby,in combination with Retalick he forms Worlds best pairing.
Beauden Barrett has had an indifferent year he`s been worked out, sometimes being intercepted or charged
down.BUT he is so quick in tackling back he saves the situation most of the time, and his Goalkicking since
the Lions series is almost up to Farrells standards.
Arguably the Crusaders 10 was the best NZ 10 of the year, and you could make a case for Finn Russell

Franks is an ok to poor international scrumager. Wiki...seriously that's not proof! Don't really rate whitelock that much to be honest but next to retallick looks excellent as I suspect every lock would.
A case for russell for what? Best 10 in the world...no. Best in nh no. Best in Scotland yes. Best attacker maybe. Well maybe if you pu rely focus on his brilliant best and ignore the times it goes wrong.

I've been heralding Furlong as the best tighthead in the world for a while and am glad he is getting the recognition he deserves. I think he is not only the best scrummaging tighthead in the world but also the best in the loose. He is an all round monster of a tighthead and only 25. The guy could become a legend.

Both Owen Franks and Sam Whitelock have 96 caps each you don`t get that for being rubbish.
The myth about the weak All Blacks scrum has been exploded against every side in the world
most sides end up going backwards.Even with 7 men in the Scrum there formidable.Sour face
Hansen as some have called him must be very happy. The worst crop of injuries ever,14 new
faces blooded, this year with all those missing back the .The World will again be chasing the
darkness.

Didn't say they were rubbish. Franks was discussed in quite a bit of depth by pooly not so long ago. He's not a great or good scrummager. He does offer a lot around the park same as vunipola. Whitelock is good but I wouldn't put him among the top 5 locks in the world. And you're right since franks has been out the scrum looks even better. But I'm afraid it'll be nz and England battling it out for a few years as the top with ireland right up there as well.

Re: Beauden Barrett wins world player of the year award!!
NZ scrum is much stronger without Frank's and Moody. Franks is an average to poor Int scrummager but has great work rate, you can see why he fits NZ.
Mako is such a lottery come scrum time. He can be awesome or dire, not his strongest skill which is a problem. What he does bring is carrying, work rate (10+ tackles at a min) and fantastic hands.
