Bangor-on-Dee racecourse has confirmed that Friday's meeting at the north Wales track has been abandoned due to severe flooding in the area.

The 151-year-old course was flooded when the River Dee burst its banks as 189.4mm of rainfall descended on the area since the beginning of February.

"The River Dee came over the top of its banks, said course clerk Ed Gretton.

"Nearly 80% of the track is now under water. The main impact is that we have abandoned our race meeting on Friday."

Flood warnings remain in place for Bangor on Dee near Wrexham as the extreme weather continues to hit north Wales.

"We know that it has ripped out two whole fences, continued clerk Gretton.

"But will not be able to assess any further damage until the water has dropped."

The racecourse, whose next fixture is 2 March, have confirmed all tickets will be refunded or transferred to a later fixture.
