South Africa have often picked up cards at a higher rate than other teams in the South, so it's interesting to see them down the list.
The All Blacks received a yellow or red card every 124 minutes during the 2017 test match season.
Among tier 1 rugby nations, only Argentina received cards at a higher rate in 2017.
In all, the All Blacks had eight yellow and one red card this season. Argentina had the same numbers but played 11 tests to the All Blacks 14.
Australia was the next most carded team, receiving six yellows and one red from 13 games, a rate of one card every 148 minutes.

The changes to rules at the breakdown probably have an effect.
Also the amount of pressure on NZ as other teams improve is probably making them infringe more. They've always been some of the most cynical, just it used to be less often and in McCaw they had a player who was uncatchable.

I think you'd always have to do a more detailed analysis of that kind of thing. You'd have to also check out how many games were NH or SH reffed. It can be a factor in the sensitivity or not to infringements of a certain nature. What goes down-under can be frowned upon up North and vice versa.
