How many points did England lose for losing to the 7th ranked team? You’d expect their points to drop through the floor.

As it was away from home the teams are more level based on handicap.
I don't imagine it will have been huge

Thanks Scottrf. I don’t follow the rankings closely but that seems a reasonable drop when at the pointy end of the table.

There is a thread devoted to IRB rankings already (Stuck to the top) - has all the info you need including the likely changes depending on next game rounds.
PS. England dropped 1.49 pts - would have been 2 pts if they were at home.

This is an old site but still does the job of calculating changes in ranking points

Re: up to date irb listings
so how much is the home advantage worth generally? or specifically, how many points would england need to be ahead of ireland in irb rankings to lose and still remain ahead after the last 6n match (assuming their points havent changed in the round 4 game which is obviously not true).
purely mathematically interested.

Home advantage is worth an extra 3 ranking points for the purposes of the calculation.
Here's a few hypothetical scenarios for the next few rounds. If you want any more run just give me a shout.

Re: up to date irb listings
From those scenarios, I'd say the World Rankings are doing their job.
If England beat France and Ireland and Ireland beat Scotland then you can say we're probably the best team in Europe and the second best team in the world, with 5 home wins and 3 away wins over a 2 year cycle (Ireland would have 5 and 2).
If Ireland get the Grand Slam they deserve to be second, they'll have a 5 and 3 vs our 4 and 2/3 (depending on the France result).
If Scotland carry on making waves and upset Ireland away (having beat England and Australia at home in the last few months) then they'll be worth a place in the top 4. Their record would be 5 home wins and 2 away over 2 Six Nations.
Wales can pick up a few points by beating France, but with losses to England and Ireland this year to go with losses to England, Scotland and France last year they are rightly ranked behind the other 3.
However the Six Nations finishes, we're all some way behind New Zealand, which is also valid. Australia and South Africa don't get gimme games against the NH anymore though.
