Re: 6N 2018 - Team of the Tournament and Retrospective
Interesting team there George but North at 14.
Nah
14. Earls: Did so much more than North to allow Ireland to be in the position to take the Slam. Was on fire, combative, speedy and defensively (example against France) like a laser guided missile at his best. It takes more than scoring tries to be a player in any position. Earls is the Championship's 14.

Re: 6N 2018 - Team of the Tournament and Retrospective
Here's mine:
1 Cian Healy - a mainstay in a dominant Irish pack
2 Stuart McInally - IMO one of the top hookers in NH rugby now. Some outstanding performances, none more so than against England
3 Tadhg Furlong - and that's without playing each game! The best TH in world rugby
4 James Ryan - nothing flashy but a beast in Ireland's boiler room
5 AWJ - he's been collosal this tournament
6 Chris Robshaw - Mr consistent had s fantastic tournament for England, one of the few players who did. Probably would have been Shingler if he'd started every game
7 Josh Navidi - honorary mention to Hamish Watson, but Navidi won their head to head down gets the nod
8 CJ Stander - an absolute beast and huge driving force in the Irish juggernaut
9 Connor Murray - he's had better individual displays the Ireland and his consistency and control is a big reason Ireland got the GS
10 Jonny Sexton - similar comments to Murray, and his drop goal against France will live long in the memory
11 Jacob Stockdale - who else!
12 Hadleigh Parkes - a younger, stronger, more skillful Jamie Roberts!
13 Mathieu Bastareaud - a physical beast who has added a bit of flair to his game! Huge presence at the breakdown too
14 Keith Earls - the form of his life
15 Matteo Minozzi - could be the new superstar of Italian rugby. Incredibly exciting player!
8 Irish, 3 Welsh, 1 Scottish, 1 English, 1 French, 1 Italian which is a reasonable split. Could have had more Scots in there but our top performers weren't consistent enough across the whole tournament. Jonny Gray deserves an honourable mention for humongous workrate and topping the tackle charts.

Re: 6N 2018 - Team of the Tournament and Retrospective
Sorry George but the title of this thread would fail the trade descriptions act. The 'team' of the tournament is simply Ireland.
Of course you mean the 'fantasy' team of the tournament, and I find the fixation in the media with such teams fascinating, and a tad unhealthy.
They often reward players like Guirado who is selected because of his work rate, but he only had such a record because of system failures around him! As a Hooker who can't hook or throw straight, should be even be in the reckoning?

Jonny Gray has set a new championship record of 100 tackles!
Interestingly Owen Farrell missed 17 tackles - the second highest in the tournament.

I counted up his tackles in the stats as 95 made 3 missed? Still a fantastic acheivement. any fantasy team without him in it is wrong ;-)

Re: 6N 2018 - Team of the Tournament and Retrospective
IMO Dan Leavy has been the best 7 in the tournament. I believe he outshine Watson and Navidi when he came up against them and also was outstanding v England.
He should get the 7 jersey. I thought Kearney was exceptional for Ireland too but Minozzi deserves the 15 jersey.

Looks like Jacques Brunel - is he the fantasy coach?
... good call, as in reality he's the one who picks the hooker that can't hook.

Just logic WC.
Every player has to make tackles and normally the flankers top those charts. A scrum half wouldn't be selected if he made the most tackles but couldn't pass or kick, so why should a hooker?
As for your (precious) opinion that Guirado will be utterly disappointed - who cares!

Nevermind. Maybe you missed out the irony ...
Anyway, it is fine to have different opinions on what a good hooker and captain should be about... hooking and throwing is what ? 5% of what they do on the field? So yes am happy to have someone leading by example and showing courage on the lose “work” specially when your team is spending most of the time defending (given we talk about the France - Ireland game).
I get that Ireland won a GS and are now (by miles) the best team of the NH and well done to them and the coaching staff and to the IRFU for all the good work over the years that made it happen. No need to become unecessary arrogant though.

Re: 6N 2018 - Team of the Tournament and Retrospective
my team of the tournament:
1. Healy
Cornerstone of a really strong Ireland pack
2. McInally
Pretty much outstanding in every game apart from Ireland, looks like he took a knock in that g
3. Furlong
The best tighthead in the world.
4. J Gray (hon mention Toner)
Apparently he broke the record for tackles made in this tournament with a tally of 98 tackles. That takes his haul to phenomenal 582 tackles from 594 attempts in his 43-Test career. Only 12 misses. Farrell missed more tackles this tournament than Gray has missed in his entire test career. Amazing.
5. AWJ (hon mention Ryan)
The best I can ever remember AWJ play, his maul defence against the french in particular was amazing.
6. Robshaw (hon mention POM)
England's best player and at times it looked like we was taking entire backrows on by himself.
7. Barclay (hon mention Leavy)
Top of the turnover tables, yes I have him here at 7 instead of 6 and yes Hamish Watson was also amazing but I feel Barclay's leadership this tournament has been excellent and he always looked like we was trying his guts out.
8. Camara (hon mention Stander)
The French pack had a good tournament and Camara and Guiardo were a big part of it.
9. Murray
Justification not needed.
10. Sexton
See above
11. Stockdale
see above
12. Aki (hon mention Parkes)
I thought Parkes had a good tournament too, but Aki edges it. I'm also a huge fan of farrell but he had a tournament to forget.
13. Jones
Played out of position against Wales, but he made up for it against France and 20x over against England. He'll rue that buthcered pass to Hogg at the Aviva but the work he went through to get to that position was wonderful. He'll mature into test match rugby with this only being his second season.
14. May (hon mention Fickou)
As with Robshaw and Farrell he looked like the only England player who cared. He looked dangerous when he got the ball and wasn't standing in touch.
15. Halfpenny
Kearney is unlucky and so is Hogg, but I thought Halfpenny was consistently excellent.
Some tough calls.

Re: 6N 2018 - Team of the Tournament and Retrospective
WC - no the irony wasn't missed. The point was that the team that wins a tournament is obviously THE "team of the tournament". It happened to be Ireland in the 6N this year, England last year, NZ in the RWC etc. That is factual, not opinion. I agree that anyone denying the best team won the tournament would indeed be ungracious or arrogant.
The fantasy collection of individuals from 1 to 15 could arguably be any permutation of the 150+ players involved in the tournament - it is fantasy after all. Jonny Gray was the top tackler, leads by example and shows courage so by your criteria why not just pick him at hooker, if hooking and throwing doesn't matter?

Why stop there? My front row of 1. Incredible Hulk 2. Captain America and 3. Thor would win plenty of scrum penalties. The Great Aukster wrote:WC - no the irony wasn't missed. George, that's just preposterous
Hulk would obviously be your tighthead (although I suppose he'd have to be better than Furlong, no sure thing), and Captain America/Thor are far too pretty to be in the front row
