Open Qualifying
Anybody you know have any success in regional qualifying? 4 of our guys went in, the guys who were top 2 in Club Champs, last years club champ (who’s now Pro) and one of our golf academy Pros. Our club champ birdied the last 3 for a -4 total and made it, the others sadly fell by the wayside from posting level, +4 & +8.
The kid is having a good year, defending his county championship title, regaining the club championship and now through to final Qualifying. Would love to see him get in but final Qualifying is such a tough school, we shall see, I certainly wouldn’t put it past him.

Re: Open Qualifying
Our local pro, from Leven, went to qualifying at Panmure and sadly scored +16 which wasn't what he, or any of us locals, expected. No excuse about the weather, either, except that it was pretty warm but the scoring was fairly high all round so the course must have been playing very fast.
EDIT: I understand from him that one of the markers on one hole missed spotting his ball, they searched for ages and couldn’t find it, he went back to the tee and as he walked down the fairway again a woman pointed to a ball just off the fairway some yards past where they’d been looking and asked if it was his! The spotter had completely missed it . Needless to say the poor chap completely lost concentration after that.

Re: Open Qualifying
Quite a few of the St.Andrews guys basically set fire to their entry fees by trying to qualify at Panmure. I don't know what they are thinking. They don't appear to be able to play anywhere that isn't wide open, but still fancy themselves as being far better than they actually are.
All but one of them returned with embarrassing scores and all they do is expose themselves as laughable pipe dreamers.
The standard required to qualify is basically where the likes of Alfie Plant and Connor Syme are at, not club golfers who are wasting money they haven't got.

How do you know the club golfers haven't got the money to waste? You may well be correct but I wouldn't have thought it was in your power to accuse them so

They're players at my club, I know most of them, I know none of them are flush, but it's still the same as setting fire to it when you post a score that a 5 handicapper would be ashamed of.
One of the guys (a saddo who has no job and lives with his mum and dad at 28 because he fancies himself as a pro) shot an 82. That's absolutely terrible.

An 82 is pretty grim. At that stage i would be tempted to take the clubs to cash converters.

It's pretty tragic Mac, they all behave like tour pro's on their twitter accounts. Commentary as if they are actually playing for a living.

Re: Open Qualifying
I think it’s a good reality check for up and coming wannabe’s. They play well in their club and perhaps County events, some get as far as the bigger amateur events and get found out, Open Qualifying does the same. Every now and again though somebody will do it and bridge the gap. I do think a lot of the middle/top amateurs don’t realise just how big the gap is between say +1/+2 and even a journeyman Pro.
I do think the young lad from our club is under no illusions.
We’ve watched Howeller make it whilst the more talented Gary Harris didn’t. More recently hes also watched County teammates Jordan Smith and Laurie Canter make it to the tour and saw other guys of similar ability to Canter try and fail.
Just found out...he’s got The Renaissance as his Final Q venue.

That's really unfair. I'm not 28 I'm only 27. I'll definitely be a pro by 28.

Re: Open Qualifying
Having a day at Hollinwell on Tuesday to watch all manner of local lads and some bigger names on a fabulous course and I think theres only 4 places available. My friends lad Ash Mason has made it which is his best achievement so far .This lad has been crashing golf balls until darkness since he was about 6.All summer hols min 54 holes around Glen Gorse.
Retief Goosen ,Robert Rock and a young man called Broadhurst from Atherstone who must be Pauls son.
If you get the chance play this course.

Re: Open Qualifying
I remember when Broadhurst had his career renaissance and won a couple of times in his mid 40s, and he put it down to his young lad telling his friends that “dad used to be a golfer”. Presumably that’s the same young lad who’s now playing himself.

Re: Open Qualifying
Pauls mum and dad used to run the clubhouse at Atherstone only club to have provided 3 ryder cup players -I don't have the other two names.
Its a hell of a golf course.First time I went I stood on the first tee and honestly had no idea where the hole went -it was uphill over some trees.Played with an old friend and his mate who was very dodgy couldn't count and used his feet a couple of times. After we had a drink and the fells left I asked my pal what his mate did and he answered 'assistant chief constable of leicestershire'

Re: Open Qualifying
Well our champ fell short yesterday, was one under through 7 then it came a bit undone. +6 morning round then +3 in the afternoon was never going to get it done. Good reality check for him, He’ll be disappointed but he’ll go away and work harder now. Was an amateur that too the top spot at the Renaissance, pretty impressive.
Some quality qualifying at Princes, Tom Lewis and the Goose.
Mary’s son fell a bit short at St Anne’s.
How was Hollinwell dyna? Noticed that the young Saunton amateur was leading after the morning round but fell away in the afternoon.

Hell it was hot those guys have some stamina.Rough high and stiff but balls found just restricts the escape shot.Proper golf course.
Andy Sullivan didn't play but made it via Ireland.Rock needs to do the business at Gullane this week and good start.

Always liked Rock, seems like very much an anti-golfer if you know what I mean. Doesn't give a toss about convention and sponsorship, does things his own way.

And are you 100% sure he’s not sponsored by Head & Shoulders?super_realist wrote:Always liked Rock, seems like very much an anti-golfer if you know what I mean. Doesn't give a toss about convention and sponsorship, does things his own way.

Re: Open Qualifying
Rob is a very genuine and professional guy .
His very first professional comp was the Midland Open at my club with my 3 playing partners in the proam(I lost the draw )Very tasty player aged about 20.
He would come back every year when he didn't have to give a little speech always got loads of advice for the younger lads and assistant pros. One year he had played the Open at St Andrews and drove down to Kedleston for the Midland Assistants on the Monday.opened the carboot and gave away a ton of balls/clothes/kit to the younger lads.He has done very well.
