Umpires should not be giving inspirational pep talks to Kyrgios!
Anyone see this at all?
Lahyani did this when NKR was 4-6 0-3 down!

Re: Umpires should not be giving inspirational pep talks to Kyrgios!
The intervention by Lahyani was totally unacceptable and cannot be justified in any way. There needs to be some form of sanction for this.
We now know what the opponent Herbert thinks about it. He’s clearly far from impressed with the umpire (having watched the relevant video clip, once he had finished his match) - and understandably so.
The official statement subsequently issued by the USTA to the media has ended up exacerbating the level of controversy rather than helping to defuse it.
In his own presser, Federer was asked about the incident and was very clear in asserting that (whilst he attached no blame to Kyrgios, and did not criticise him at all) “it will not happen a second time ”
Well-written article in the link.

Agree with that Lags save that I’m not convinced a sanction is necessary. Personally, I think a statement from Lahyani/the USTA explaining that his intention was to ensure that Kyrgios was trying, for the good of the paying crowd, but that, on review, it is clear that he went too far in trying to achieve that outcome and an apology would be sufficient.

Also, whilst Fed attaches no blame to Kyrgios, it feels like he is getting a bit of a pass here. Ultimately, Lahyani was put in a position of trying to do what he thought was best for the match solely because Nick was apparently tanking/showing little interest. Whilst we agree he went too far, he was only in that situation because of Krygios’ attitude. That shouldn’t be overlooked.

Update: Nick Kyrgios' talk with chair umpire Mohamed Lahyani during second-round match
Does Kyrgios want to move to WTA?
Tournament Referee Brian Earley and others, the US Open determined that chair umpire Mohamed Lahyani’s conduct during Thursday’s second-round match involving Nick Kyrgios and Pierre-Hugues Herbert went beyond protocol. Lahyani was advised to adhere to proper protocols in all matches that he officiates moving forward.
