Can't see Denly being in the test side.
How about Lyth or Hales.
Even Northeast or Taylor (who opened for the Lions recently)?

Also, 28's a bit of a young cut off point IMO. In 5 years Bell will only be 34, Trott and KP only 35, Anderson 33, Tremlett 34 and even Swann will only be 37, so a number of them might well still be around.

What your list does show, however, is that England has a lot of good young talent coming through at the moment. Hopefully some of them will go on to be great international cricketer.

Agreed definitely.

It's hard to make a call on the sides in the future as form changes, but I'd say Liam's are good calls and again not too dissimilar to what I'd come up with. Although I'd have been tempted to have admitted some of Hoggy's suggestions.

I think Denly will improve as the years go on,lovely player to watch aswell. Hales is a good shout, completely forgot about him.

I had the cut off at 28 as a the average age that Cricketers retire from International Cricket is around 33/34 feel free to put players over 28 in your side though.

Reckon in 5 years we'll be able to choose from a pool of players (test and one-day) including:

Openers:
Cook
Lyth
Hales
Denly
Northeast
Kieswetter
Davies

Middle-order:
Trott
Bell
KP
Taylor
Hildreth
Bopara
Stokes
Patel

Keepers:
Prior
Davies
Kieswetter
Buttler
Bairstow

Seamers:
Anderson
Tremlett
Broad
Woakes
Bresnan
Finn
Shahzad
Harris
Topley
Dernbach
Roland-Jones
Meaker

Spinners:
Rashid
Briggs
Borthwick
Beer
Rafiq
Tredwell

Maybe a bit short on spinners (can't think of any more off the top of my head), but still, not too shabby.

Hoggy and all - even allowing for Surrey bias, you should definitely add Jason Roy king to your list.

It certainly is looking like happy days for England cricket as for the first time in a long time, they have strength in depth. Its for this reason that they are starting to win alot of series.

Team 5 years ago today

Trescothick
Strauss
Cook
Pietersen
Collingwood
Bell
GJones -
Plunkett
Hoggard

Harmison
Panesar

ODIs for the month of June 5 years ago

Trescothick, Joyce, Strauss, Collingwood, Bell, Dalrymple, GJones, Chapple, Plunkett, Mahmood, Harmison, Pietersen, Bresnan, Louden, Solanki, Kabir Ali

You could say that half the Test team now would still be playing in 5 years time but the ODI team changes more rapidly. Maybe two or three will still be there.

In five years time Flower will have probably gone and we might even have two different coaches for the different formats. We will definitely have a different selection panel. We still won't have won the World Cup. Smile

How about young Gregory at Somerset? I've heard good things about him, anyone more in the know care to comment?

Englands team in 5 years time Empty Re: Englands team in 5 years time

A couple of thoughts:

I don't rate Denly that highly technically. I'd love to be wrong but I can't see him being successful at international level. Hales and especially Lyth are probably better options.

A name no one has mentioned is Dawid Malan of middlesex. He's played some tremendous innings for them over the last couple of years and I think he could be very special, he just seems to have that extra time which all true greats have. His record is average but on a hunch I'd be very very surprised if he doesn't play for England at some point.

James Taylor is probably the next in line for the middle-order, but at the moment there is a while to go until anyone retires (not unusual to see players playing well into their mid-30s).

I don't think Bopara is upto it mentally.

Ben Stokes is a good little player, wouldn't be surprised to see him do well.

Overall England have plenty of batting talent in the wings.

Seam-bowling is similar: Topley, Harris, Roland-Jones, Finn, Bresnan, Shahzad all very young and already very good. Not convinced about Meaker, think he needs to gain a lot of strength as at the moment it's kinda 1 quick ball in 4. Unconvinced Dernbach will cut it at test level but I said the same thing about Bresnan and he proved me wrong in Aus.

Spin-bowling is a worry as things stand: I am very unconvinced about Rashid. For a leg-spinner to do well he needs to be very good. I don't think Rashid's leg-break is good enough. I could be wrong. I quite liked the look of Borthwick when I first saw him, but not sure how things stand now. Beer may be ok for ODIs but won't take wickets in test matches. Tredwell is very average but will do a job if necessary. Panesar is still youngish? Of course Swann could go on for a while. Briggs looks promising. Not sure how much else there is. Apart from Warne, most spinners mature quite late so someone like Borthwick if given 4 years may become good (or even Rashid). But certainly this is where the reserves are weakest...

unlikely, could maybe develop well with county experience and maybe play once or twice but, i expected him to go like Trego, flirt with the lions but never go the distance
