Benetton Rugby v Glasgow Warriors Saturday 5th January 2019
First topic message reminder :
Benetton Rugby v Glasgow Warriors
Stadio Monigo
Treviso
Saturday 5th January 2019
KO 15.00
Live on Premier Sport
Well after the sickening disappointments of the festive derbies, it is back to the day job of the rest of the league for Glasgow and having thrown all their festive points away in the Edinburgh double header, this match now takes on more significance than it otherwise might have done. Having had a comfortable lead at the top of our conference, Munster are now breathing right down our necks.
Benetton are no mugs these days, especially at home. They are also on form having won their double header with Zebre and as they are not going to be that interested in the euro games, will be targeting this game as an opportunity to knock off one of the big boys.
Glasgow on the other hand, won't be giving this game the full strength treatment. They have just come out of a very hard block of Euro games and derbies and several players are going to need to be rested prior to the final to euro pool games from which knock out qualification is still very possible. This game has banana skin written all over it.
On the more positive side, the Glasgow squad players have stepped up to the mark on several occasions already this season when required to do so and with several first teamers not really showing their form I the derby games will be pushing hard to make their point in on-going selection dilemmas for the coaching staff. A few players looked heavy legged last week though and in need of a bit of rejuvenation. They should get that this week.
My stab at the team:
Kebble
Stewart
Nuke
Swinson
Cummings
Wilson
Fusaro
Ashe
Horne G
Thompson
Niko
Johnson
Jones H
DTH
Jacko
Allen
Bryce
Rae
Harley
Smith
Frisbee

The confidence and the swagger has just suddenly disappeared. You can see that in Hastings more than any other player. He needs a week off now and the chance to re group. He may not even be benching for Scotland this 6N unless he gets his mojo back

Jeezo. Edinburgh seem to have broken Glasgow.
Can anyone watching the game comment on where things went wrong? Was it the breakdown and knickers back row?
We really need Glasgow to get well soon

Benetton are a much improved side these days and we won't be the only decent side they turn over at home, but even with all due respect to them, that was a game we threw away, plenty of chances to win it in the last 20 mins. We have just lost our edge.
I am a bit worried about the Cardiff game next week now, they will have nothing to lose and we will be under pressure now.

Firstly, fair play to Treviso. They played really well and were unlucky not to pick up a TBP. They've been many people's second team for years now and they really deserve their second place in their conference after all they've been through.
We really need a reaction in Europe because the last few weeks have really not been good enough. Considering Rennie has just been rewarded with a contract extension, you really start to wonder if he's up to it.
Better to lose form now than at the end of the season, but our season is on a knife edge now and we need some real leadership to get us back.

Just killed by inaccuracy and mistakes, we had them in the last 20 but could not put them away. Very frustrating.
Only positives I saw was Johnson looked right back in the grove and Lee Jones was sharp when he came back on.
Hastings had another mare and then got subbed before the final penalty, which Thompson came on and missed, we had already turned down two easier shots!

Real lack of carriers and physicality too - Wilson's 'leadership' very much missing again with stupid penalty and a pretty ineffective display. There's no way he should be playing in the 6N on current form.

Congrats Bennetton on a toughed-out win. That last penalty miss and Glasgow working it back up field must have been a bit nervy but they held out well.
Bennetton might need to bring in some oxygen tanks for the rest of the season.

Where does one buy a Southern Kings top in Glasgow?

Bit of a strange comment given all Edinburgh fans would have been supporting Glasgow, and not just because we needed Treviso to lose!
It's not like Edinburgh losing would help Glasgow in any way either.

They seem to be building nicely but if they get to the Champs Cup playoff it will be deemed a success.

Just saw the stats for the game.
We really had the lot, double the possession, twice the metres and half the tackles
How did we manage to lose?

Benetton are steadily improving, some good players and much better coaching now. They still lack depth though and will struggle in the international window when their internationals are away. They had a good set of U20s last year though and if more of them filter through, they will continue to improve.
They have won 7 games so far this season, that would be a decent shift if the season ended now and they will win more. It is good for Italian rugby and good for the league if they keep on improving.

Firstly it was a gentle wind-up because losing to perceived guff sides is Edinburgh's forte and not Glasgow. Particularly to a guff side that well and truly battered us earlier this season over in SA.
For the record though, you and others deciding to follow both Scottish sides is your business not mine but it doesn't mean I have to reciprocate.

For what it's worth, how you're feeling just now is what it has been like for Edinburgh fans for years!

Or just support a team with a proper back row!

That was like watching Scotland under frank Hadden.
if we played that game again everyday next week we would win all seven of them.

Is this officially a Crisis? I don't usually like to make a drama out of one.

Apparently Rennie said Hastings isn't subject to the 5 game limit so could play the next two games.
Not sure that would be the best idea.

That's mental, surely not.
Suspect Horne will start at 10 against the Blues next week but personally I'd play Thomson at 10 but have Hogg do the kicking.

I believed you, I was just incredulous at the thought of the guy starting next week because he must be exhausted.
Suppose it doesn't matter too much in the end because come the world cup, the Meatball will be starting fly half after his heroics at Sixways yesterday.

Can't see Thompson starting. Pete Horne maybe if he is fit
Johnson played well yesterday so you would imagine he will start at 12
