SURREY VS KENT SPECSAVERS COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP
Sam Curran is included in a 14-man squad to travel to Beckenham for the Specsavers County Championship fixture against Kent starting on 20th May.
Matt Dunn could make his first appearance of the domestic campaign, as he is Surrey’s second change from the squad that was announced to face Somerset in Taunton last week.
Stuart Meaker is left out completely from the last squad.
Jade Dernbach (calf) and Amar Virdi (side) are not yet fully fit and Jordan Clark is not considered due to his poor form.
FULL SQUAD
Rory Burns (c)
Gareth Batty
Scott Borthwick
Rikki Clarke
Sam Curran
Matt Dunn
Dean Elgar
Ben Foakes
Will Jacks
Conor McKerr
Morne Morkel
Ryan Patel
Mark Stoneman
Freddie van den Berg
Burger van, Dunn and Jacks to miss out
As said on the pervious match thread Patel as the 4th seamer is not advisable
Harsh on jacks but with baby face at 7 its hard to fit him in.
Over to you chaps

Re: SURREY VS KENT SPECSAVERS COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP
Cheers, JimBob.
My guesses-
Fred to miss out, almost for sure.
Patel to also miss out unless Elgar is still Uncle Dick.
Last place is a shoot out between McKerr and Dunn. I'll say Dunny to play although that may be heart over head.
Not sure of the situation with Jordan Clark. He was so awful in the RL 50 I can understand him not being picked. Furthermore, he's not mentioned on the club website with others who are injured. However, he didn't play for the stiffs last week. Odd.

McKerr did pretty decently last time out so I'd expect him to keep his place ahead of Dunn. I'll agree with Guildford and say Jacks plays ahead of Patel.

Surrey go with James' eleven, win toss and inevitably bat.

Olly - ha!
Meanwhile, a comics cut run out sees Stoneman back in the hutch - just hope JimBob doesn't see it! Terrible.
Now 34/1. Looks a good batting track but we have to make it count. Some loose bowling from Podmore but Stevens wobbling it around and beating the bat already.

''Interesting, this ... not what we were were expecting'' - Church spot on as Surrey tumble to 45/3. Burns and Elgar both caught behind, to Podmore and Milnes respectively. Seems a decent track but still some lift and movement on offer for the bowlers.

91/5 at the break. Oh dear! There don't seem to be demons in the wicket but certainly some bounce which the Surrey batsmen haven't come to terms with.
Just to flag how badly we're doing - all 5 dismissed batsmen have played Test cricket in the last year.

JimBob - that's 4 fifties in 5 Championship innings this season for your boy Jacks. He needs to go on today though, as does Borthwick ....

Yeah, he was poor in that. Mind you, I think all our batters were.
A batting point for you now, JimBob - didn't think I would be saying that around 12:30!

Borthwick out for 95 LBW to Riley...I’m not the most trained eye but that looked to be going quite far down leg to me...

240 - 6 as Borthwick rather loses patience and tries to sweep a straight ball. Fine innings from Borthwick. After a loose period in which they were leaking runs at a tremendous rate Kent tightened up in the last 20 mins.

2nd batting point, which seemed a long way off midway through first session. Need Rikki Clarke to continue good batting form from the last match.
260 - 6 at tea. Jacks still going well, on 93. Certainly Surrey's session - although you feel Kent would fancy getting a decent first innings lead if Surrey scored about 300.

Tend to agree. We'll obviously have to see how Kent get on with the bat. However, upon having lost the toss, I feel they would then have settled for us being 260/6 at tea.

Yep, excellent innings from Jacks but some credit as well to Clarke. It would have been too easy for us to fold for 265 once Borthwick was sixth out with the score on 240.

350 - 7 and a 4th batting point. Surrey rattling along against new ball - useful partnership between Clarke and Morkel.

Re: SURREY VS KENT SPECSAVERS COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP
Entertaining day's play. Superb innings from Rikki Clarke to follow up Borthwick and Jacks' excellent knocks. Well played by Morkel and Batty too.
Does look like a fast scoring ground for any batsman who gets in, but at least Surrey are now well back in the game with full batting points.

Bang on.
Regulars will not be surprised that I totally disagree with Church's suggestion about declaring overnight. Give their opening bats as little time as possible to prepare and leave 'em wondering when they'll be walking to the crease. As Stewie has emphasised this more than once at forum meetings, I can't see why he should change approach here.
Also, we should still try to get as many runs as we can - outfield seems quick (there were plenty of boundaries) - and shouldn't assume we already have a winning total. Furthermore, Clarke deserves a dart at a ton.

Re: SURREY VS KENT SPECSAVERS COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP
As Church was discussing the overnight declaration in the final 15 minutes of play I was thinking to myself "if a man in Guildford is currently listening/watching, he will be muttering angrily about not declaring overnight"
Top fightback from the lower order - a shame Borthwick didn't get his hundred, but his knock shouldn't be underestimated. Dug in early against Stevens and saw him off, and then helped Jacks through the beginning of innings before he got going properly.
As for Jacks - superb knock, at times effortlessly hitting the boundary. What a talent!
As for Rikki Clarke - will he ever age?! Hopefully he can elegantly bludgeon (the best way I can describe his batting) his way to a hundred tomorrow AM
The game situation - we are in a decent position. By no means dominant, but a darn sight better than it was looking around 12:30pm today. And there is something in the pitch if the seamers get it in the right areas

Re: SURREY VS KENT SPECSAVERS COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP
I can't fathom why Surrey might want to declare overnight - would seem completely pointless. After all, if in the first over or two the Surrey batsmen realise conditions are very favourable to bowlers they could simply agree that they wouldn't poke and prod but that Rikki Clarke would fling the bat at everything.
I also think it's pyschologically quite useful in this situation if the side batting first are able to bat on for a few more overs on day 2. This makes it just that bit less likely that the side batting second will already be ahead on runs scored at the end of day 2. Moreover, if Kent bat well tomorrow it could be very handy for Surrey if the newish ball was still quite hard first thing on day 3.

Re: SURREY VS KENT SPECSAVERS COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP
Even though they batted for only 2 and a bit overs, McKerr/Clarke added another 19 onto the score - before Clarke nicked off to slip off Podmore. 439 all out
Handy partnerships for the 8th, 9th and 10th wicket - Morkel/Batty/McKerr all contributing double figures and hanging around for a bit. Always good to get some useful contributions from the bowlers!

Only been able to look in now and again today but have been getting worried for Surrey and you, JimBob!
Looking more like it should be a 600 v 700 first dig draw ... and we ended up 160 short which might be a problem.

Not able to follow much but seems we have battled back well with Batty leading the way. Kent currently 250 odd for 6. Would like a 100 lead from here.
