Well Patchell has to be back to 2nd fly-half by now. Unlucky for Jarrod, first start for Wales playing outside that croquet of Shiite.

Not really... check it again later... seen red for lot less,Collapse2005 wrote:No9 wrote:Very close to no arms on that also... replay does show him try and wrap his arm round him...
Lucky not yellow, if the no arms was seen could have easily been red. Under RWC rules, TMO could have called for red,
I think you are getting a bit carried away with that one.
Would have been unfair though...

NZ achieve top spot in the IRB ratings without beating the No 1 side
Erm ... other than last 30 games in a row between the two sides, over the past 60+ years, maybe? Wales have had good results and played good rugby but no-one can really moan about not being No 1 if you haven’t beaten everyone else in the most recent head to head games.

Guns you’re posting a bit one-eyed today. If there’s consistency then that’s an attempt at a no arms tackle. The citing officer can review it but I think he’ll overlook it, they tend to do that during these warm-ups.
With that Poite shows his inconstancy at the scrum again.

Well played Ireland. Good win.
Wales’ starters were poor but some good signs from the finishers.

He wraps his arms. No issue at all for me. The ref seemed to view it as only a borderline penalty. It was always a pen but never anything more.

Once the better Welsh players came on Ireland looked poor (though I think McGrath was to slow when we had the ball).
Still think alot of questions still to be answered

Well played Ireland....
Not sure how can be taken from the game. Ireland had more first(ish) players playing than Wales, but neither sides full strength.
Think some of the Welsh players lost more than their opposite numbers, as more men in red played themselves off the plane, than those in green.

Certainly a different Wales team in the second half. Makes you want to feal sorry for Wales.
Patchell made all the difference to how Wales played in the second half, surely he must be Wales number 2 fly half in japan.
Well played Ireland. and hard very bad luck Wales.

Yeah well done Ireland for turning over the No.1 team... Hopefully we see a response from Wales next week. It’s time to click. If Sexton is unavailable then I rate our chances.

Hey lads
I think we all probably have a lot of discussion regarding who we think makes our respective squads....
Maybe we take that up on the respective pre-RWC Threads we both have?

That’s a fair summary. Wales will have learned a lot in terms of selection, and will probably be a bit disappointed not to have completed the comeback.
Ireland still have a lot of question marks. On this form, they’ll be worried about whether Scotland cam spring a surprise first game up, and they’d be easy meat for either NZ or SA in the quarters.

It was indeed a borderline penalty. Aki is unable to back out of the challenge as he is so close to Davies when he jumps for the ball. That it was a pass not a kick means that you cannot expect Aki to anticipate a player off the ground. The arms do wrap, just. Poite was also checking whether Davies had possession before he jumped as then it would have been penalty to Ireland.

Re: Wales and Ireland Two warm up test series Match Thread
Proper warm up game that and we learned loads....certainly better than going soft on teams like Italy. Yeah you get a soft win but you learn zip.
Amos - the ball died too often with Amos but he probably goes
Lane - should go but probably won't see Amos but is one for the future
Holmes - as above looked confident but stays
Brown - last pen was a shocker decision by ref but clearly he doesnt fly
Lee- solid and a traveller
Carre- undercooked at this level but will be one in future
Ball/Davies - assuming Beard, Hill and AWJ go then its him or Ball. After kicking Ball in the balls for his midfield passing I take Ball marginally
Williams - fizzed and deserves to be No 2 scrum half
Patchell - ah now I remember....will push Biggar IMO, totally changed 2nd half
Watkin/Williams - for me its the latter but he looks rusty needs another game fast
Steff Evans - just off the pace and doesnt have the space he needs his first counter should have been a kick. Not sure he is an international
Ben Evans - goes but he needs game time fast
Jarrod Evans - poor IMO and I dont think he understood what was going on first half....offered nothing really to combat Irish blitz and little or no kicking game
Shingler/Davies - for me its Shingler cos he offers more but I feel for Cubby. You have to assume its Moriarty, Navidi, Shingler, Tipuric, Wainwright
31 Man RWC Squad
Props - Smith, Evans, Francis, Lewis, Lee, Jones
Hookers - Ken, Dee, Elias
Locks - AWJ, Hill, Beard, Ball
Back rows - Shingler, Moriarty, Wainwright, Tipuric, Navidi
9s - Davies, Williams, Davies
10S - Bigs, Patchell
Centres - JD2, Parkes, Williams
Back 3 - Half, Adams, North, Amos, Liam

Re: Wales and Ireland Two warm up test series Match Thread
Ireland won. 'Well played' would be stretching it in my opinion. Still extremely disjointed, all over the place with rhythm. Frustratingly passive when they should be ramping up advantage periods. Always ready to let the opposition decide the level of aggression in attack. Large defensive shifts still the go-to strategy unfortunately.
Anyway, I expected worse so it's a step forward.
Will Gatland be content with the second half performance? It was dangerous and robust stuff but it's kind of Wales' signature tune at this stage - those second half surges. With Ireland being in the vulnerable mood they are currently in, it was pleasing that they were sharp enough not to be rattled into enough panic to throw away the win.
Overall, reasonably satisfied with the win, but LOADS of meat to be put on them bones yet (metaphorically speaking lest anyone think I'm still on about Irish conditioning shortfalls). Those criticisms will come next week

Not borderline whatsoever. Tackled in the air.

hmm...is that the shortest no. 1 reign in history?
thanks though...good cheap sitters are hard to find these days.
So Ireland scrape in with a poor finish to the match...hmmm...hope the coaches can get something out of it.

Think they are still number one Taylor. I think we needed a 16 point gap or something. In the end, the win was plenty...... relief.

I saw a few high (neck) swipes too in the melees. How many potential reds were out there? Enough to turn the game into a tennis match?

Interesting that one-eyed Guns has gone quiet about the scrums. Wtf was Poite’s odd calls all about there? Kilcoyne looked good. The rest of Ireland’s props and hookers were meh. If those guys don’t improve next week then Ireland won’t be much good. Oh well, onto next week!

Slagging your two least favourite teams in the same post and doing it successfully must be like winning the lottery . We’ll happily accept the No.1 tag so long as it comes from beating NZ in the final, that’s if your lot make it .

Re: Wales and Ireland Two warm up test series Match Thread
Clearly Ireland were vastly superior to Wales today. Thankfully Wales managed some kind of fight back to save ourselves from a humiliation as far as the score is concerned in the history books, though Wales 17 points could of easily been 17 to Ireland.
As the game broke up I was glad to see Patchell standing deep to try to get the line moving quickly, so Wales could at least get some momentum and make a game of it. Until that point Wales were woeful.
All in all it never ends well for Wales when we pick reserves or make too many changes, I feel sorry for all the people who bought tickets for today's game as it may as well of been an A team game. Cheap caps awarded, loyal fans ripped off, Gatland's Cardiff goodbye ending in a damp squib, with Ireland deserving the win and being unlucky not to of won by a much higher margin.

I do think the bench was wrong. We should have had a power bench to secure the win.
But by exposing 3rds to this level we found out who will step up
Some deserve mention - Lane, Patchell for taking their opportunities
Others for reminding us they aren't ready - Brown, Carre, Steff, Jarrod and possibly Amos whose tendency os to tray towards wing.

Wales were dominated in the scrums Mikey, I dont think Wales will be happy with that. Ireland had two tight heads playing and still dominated.

thanks though...good cheap sitters are hard to find these days.
So Ireland scrape in with a poor finish to the match...hmmm...hope the coaches can get something out of it.
Slagging your two least favourite teams in the same post and doing it successfully must be like winning the lottery . We’ll happily accept the No.1 tag so long as it comes from beating NZ in the final, that’s if your lot make it .
oh for sure. The match was an excellent example of NH rugby.

Given the lineups its almost more of a win for Wales. Not a great game by Ireland but some decent performances.

I wouldn’t take too much from that at all.. all four props were playing in their first games of the season pretty much so I don’t think we held great hopes for our scrum..
Bit annoying that Poite wasted so much of everyone’s time resetting again and again rather than just awarding a pen try...
To be honest the yellow card was equally pedantic... this is a friendly kick about, not a competitive match. What we all genuinely want to see is ball in play right...!

Considering the difference in the respective benches I think wales did well in the second half.
Ireland looked good though. Solid defence, good halfbacks, good back three.

Think they are still number one Taylor. I think we needed a 16 point gap or something. In the end, the win was plenty...... relief.
NZ have moved top again. Ireland 2nd, Wales drop to 4th. Wales can go back top if they win by 16 points next week. A smaller win than that merely sees them swapping with Ireland.

Where do you get dominated from? The first scrum of the match went to Wales. I agree Ireland got the upper hand but from then on they collapsed a few. Wales won the final scrum but Poite just waved play on and didn’t award us the pen. Thanks to Ireland Poite took a dislike to Brown and to be honest that’s just how scrums go, but it’s still frustrating to watch.

According to pre match press, the coaches agreement was that todays game would be largely experimental teams with next week much closer to full strength. Who do people expect to see playing next week?
