Wales not looking too good at the moment, Uruguay closing them down every time.

Control starts at halfback. If you don’t have it then the team doesn’t have it. It’s painful to watch Aled Davies jogging around and put in his laboured passes, when he’s not making a dire attempt at a clearout.

This is as poor as I have seen Wales play in a long time. Poor handling and composure.
I still expect them to win but they are making hard work of it.

This has the feel of many of those 4th AI games where Wales heavily rotate and struggle with the new combinations. Really poor stuff from Wales. 7-6 at half time? Poor.

Wainwright is struggling to control the ball at scrums, the pack are not giving clean ruck ball, Davies does look poor, Patchell looks nervous and offering little, Parkes looks to be carrying a knock.
Then add in that many of the Wales team have barely played in 6 months and Uruguay are permanently offside and it is no wonder Wales are struggling atm.

You have just got to take your hat off to Uruguay for the way they are playing this game and it puts to bed any talk that the WC should just be played between the top team.
This tournament was their chance to show what they can do and boy have they taken it. Some really good players in that team, who in other circumstances would likely be playing professional rugby.

mikey-dragon said the other day that Wales could make 23 changes and still beat Uruguay.
Well at the moment Wales do not look like they can beat Uruguay at all.
Am expecting Wales to cut lose in the second half, but they are making too many errors at the moment.

You absolute beast.
In all fairness, I would say Welsh girls are better looking than most other places in Wales. Your posh English ones down south look all horsey, the ones up north are a bit rough, and then you've got rugged bumpkins everywhere else.
Anyway, bit of a sh1t game, isn't it. Started well, but a classic case of everyone wanting to score tries like Gerald Davies and not working out that they're going to have to hurt themselves a bit early doors. Shingler doing ok, Tipuric standing out, Patchell showing he needs to concentrate to be a top class test player otherwise he's a liability. At the moment it's pretty clear they look like a team that's done f all training and prep together for this game, no tactical stuff etc. Should still be better though. Expect a rocket and then a second wave from the bench. Easy bonus point win in 60 minutes is what I'm sticking to.

These typeof matches can often become a bit of a nightmare.
You know you can beat them, but the you forget the basics, then errors start creeping in, then decision making goes out the window and then finally you lose your rythm.
But I am sure Gatland is laying down the law now, keep to your structures, earn the right to go wide, respect the opponent, keep toyour tactics, calm down, play the game

Oh I think they are playing well. They are a bunch of amateurs, they just said the prop is a taxi driver in Montevideo!
They are fit, they are playing as a team and with no lack of skill either and they all look prepared to die for the jersey.
This match is a massive miss match but Uruguay don't seem to have read the script.
Wales will still win and probably with a BP, but you can't take away from Uruguay being in the game at half time.

They gave it their all first half, but as amateurs it is tough to do it for 80 against a tier one team, the intensity and pace will tell after 60 minutes.

Are Wales winning? So they probably do look like they can win. For all this Uruguayan "brilliance", it has been a defensive effort only. Pure damage limitation.

Not sure why the mods keep putting up with your silly commentary all the time. Wales clearly still look like they can beat Uruguay. Bit of a contradiction there if you think Wales can cut ‘loose’.

Its an odd one. Wales are creating space but are continuously let down by handling errors.
Welsh 9 is very pedestrian.
Parkes being deployed like Jamie Roberts MarkII
Uruguay defending well but really should have been a man down after the first Wales try due to several (about 7?) consecutive penalties in a row in the red zone. They were on a final warning prior to the try and committed a penalty offence in the lead up. I still think YC's should be shown where deserved regardless if the opposition score a try.

Agree that wales are going for the miracle stuff. We’re throwing big miss passes instead of drawing the man and putting it through the hands. Basics, boys. Basics.

They're plucky for sure, and in terms of tactics, they're probably my favourite team of the tournament so far. Not too much talent per se, but some real fight and understanding of the basics - which isn't always the case with the Welsh, sadly. Uruguay remind me of Argentina of 10 years ago - in fact, they also remind me of their football team, another team I warmed to (side note - anyone remember the cringe pundit/media chat at the 2010 WC in the Ghana v Uruguay game? Too obscure? Nevermind...).
Wales should go on and thump them now - you'd hope so anyway. Players like Bradley Davies etc. are putting in their own minutes of the tournament, worth leaving it all out there.
Ryan Elias playing well as well. Showing his worth. Adams doing decently on the ball. Just literally no connection and understanding as a team really, across the board. No understanding of how to build pressure, that you can't just fling it wide wide without also running hard and straight. All you have to do here is hold the ball, get running options on the gainline, and 3-4 phases later there will be gaps in the midfield to use the hands to get between. Real basic rugby.

Uruguay are fighting like mad to deny Wales space, being aided by the ref. However looking beyond their fired up defence, they look to have the skills of a mid-table English Championship side. Uruguay look determined to work together to repel Wales. Wales look scared of getting an injury and are trying too hard to impress individually.

Agree. So many referees bottle that decision, though. A smart team would take advantage of that tendency, and contrive to allow a score, preferably out wide, rather than keep them out, and go a man down.eirebilly wrote:...They were on a final warning prior to the try and committed a penalty offence in the lead up. If you're a Dr of medicine you're very definitely 'a doctor'. It's also an old school job people can relate to/understand in the big, weird world of newspeak job titles and bogus qualifications. Degrees in other areas are a bit ambiguous - an engineer could be any number of things. If Ken Owens was a policeman, for instance, he'd literally always be called the Sheriff. Just a recognisable job - and also it jars a bit with the idea of rugby as this sport for big hulking idiots. Maybe also harks back to JPR as well - Wales are trying to play like its still the 70s in all fairness, so commentators can be forgiven.

Don't bother warning them again Angus. It's not as if you'll follow through on your warnings.
