Referee's and The Rugby World Cup?
Who or What decides who referee's the quarter, semi final, and final?
Does each referee get a certain amount of games?
Do they know what games they will be involved in before the Rugby World Cup?
Does each referee get evaluated after every game to see if any decisions he made was the correct one?
Discuss.

I was thinking that for this week end's game each referee who is avaiaible for this week end was put into a hat and drawn out that way.
But surely that is not the way is it?

I would imagine that the decision is based on seniority, performances so far and eligibility to officiate the game (ie not a fixture containing s side from the union they represent). Officials will probably be earmarked for games in advance but it depends how fixtures play out.
I wonder whether a referee’s style (ie more pedantic or free-flowing style) based on the two sides playing is ever taken into account? Something we’ll probably never know.

On a slightly different note I think refs should be encouraged to at least learn the basics for instructing players in other languages eg Barnes in French. It would certainly help their cause in being selected for games and be a bit fairer for sides. The assumption that both sides always understand instructions especially in the heat of battle is probably over-estimated.

The four officials selected for the 1/4 finals are those deemed the four best referees, based on seniority and performances.
Normally the final will be reffed by one of these.

Agree with that Cyril. That's what makes Barnes the best ref for me. It's great the Nige is bilingual but he could have learnt a bit of French in the last 10 years, just to smooth things over a bit.

Good to see Owens gets to defend his title as the worlds best ref as well. Two finals in a row?

As Wales are second favourites to make the final, maybe not.

The refs were selected as referees, assistants or tmo specialists in advance so I dont think we will see the likes of Owen's running up the sidelines in the final, it's either the main job or nothing.
The statement from world rugby was that the quarter final assignments were based on a review of performances at the world cup so far.
But all bat Pepyer are also the most experienced /senior world cup referees so it does feel like that influenced the selections.
It does look like they are playing knock out themselves to get the semis and final, and those who didn't get a quarter rely on someone doing something outrageous like not fixing the New Zealand game.

If england dont make the final I'd love to see barnes there. Quality ref with the best communication in the game. We'll all disagree with decisions at some but you know exactly what hes given pens for and thus what you have to do in order for him not to ping you next time.

It's a time when WR really get to mess with team psychology. It's basically sadism from the suits in high seats.
Coach (hinting strongly behind the scenes post bad game): "Em, we're pretty disappointed really with the...... well, look, we have to come out and say it straight here amongst ourselves. We don't like Ref A. And he don't like us. So let's stop pretending here. We can never please the guy. He pings us off the field and basically..... he seems to enjoy it. So we'd be quite offended, in light of what I'm saying directly to you now, if he was to get any more games involving us for a while."
Very next game, Ref A given the job.
Sadism.

I thought they picked referees based on what would annoy 606v2 members the most

Check check...TMO, show me that again slowly...
Yes, foul play, I agree. No mitigating circumstances. Right, come here, Bam...
That's totally unacceptable what you've done. It's a yellow card, I don't want to see anything like that again.
