SURREY VS ESSEX BOB WILLIS TROPHY
SURREY HAVE NAMED A SQUAD OF 13 FOR THEIR BOB WILLIS TROPHY MATCH WITH ESSEX, INCLUDING LOANEES LAURIE EVANS & ADAM FINCH.
Sussex batsman Evans and Worcestershire seamer Finch have both joined the squad on a one-week loan deal specifically for this match at Chelmsford.
Gus Atkinson has also been added to the squad from last week’s opener against Middlesex, with only Jordan Clark dropping out due to a side strain he suffered in that match. Should Atkinson play, he would make his senior debut for the Club.
Tom Curran and Jason Roy have been made unavailable for selection
Reece Topley is recovering from his groin strain.
As well as Clark & Topley, four further players are unavailable through fitness issues. Jade Dernbach is progressing with his back-to-bowling programme. Nicholas Kimber & Conor McKerr are both unavailable with knee injuries while Liam Plunkett remains sidelined with a hamstring strain.
There is still no update on Nico Reifer
FULL SQUAD
Gus Atkinson
Scott Borthwick
Rikki Clarke
Matt Dunn
Laurie Evans
Adam Finch
Will Jacks
Daniel Moriarty
Ryan Patel
Jamie Smith
Mark Stoneman
James Taylor
Amar Virdi
Maybe Atkinson and Taylor to miss out, no way we can start another game with the tail starting too high.
if not maybe one of the spinners which would be very harsh on Moriaty if he is chosen to miss out.

Cheers, JimBob. Evans came through the Surrey age groups and was thought at one time to have a great future at the Club. However, he and former head coach Chris Adams never got on and he was released about a decade ago. Although largely regarded as a limited overs batsman nowadays, he'll be keen to show what we missed out on.
Evans and seamer Finch seem certain to play. Even if unwritten, that must have been part of the deals getting them both in for only a week.
I would guess that Taylor will miss out and be joined on the bench by Dunn or Atkinson. If you push me, I'll say Dunn although I hope not. Whilst Dunn has real pace which I always like, Atkinson is more of a dobber which may suit the Chelmsford track and is the better bat.
Poor from England not to release Tom Curran and Roy, particularly Roy.
We'll do well to get much out of this match. Essex are a strong side and have a canny skipper in Tendo. I've seen some suggestions that Stoneman might captain us. That appears odd - I'm not aware of Clarke being injured and doubt he would be binned from his stand-in role so soon even though he was poor against Middlesex.

What on earth are England holding back Roy and Curran for ? They aren't needed again for weeks , are they ?
And I understand they have allowed Bairstow to turn out for Yorkshire so the consistency seems missing...

Fine question, Alfie.
''Tom Curran & Jason Roy have been made unavailable for selection for Surrey after their ODI series'' is the quote from Stewart on the website and the only semblance of an explanation given by the Club.
Unfortunately I can't attend but there's an online members' forum next week at which I would expect Stewart to be more forthcoming.

They might want Rikki to focus solely on bowling/batting? Is a lot to ask to open the bowling, bat 5/6, and captain too

Quite possible but it seems strange to make the decision to go with Clarke as captain for the first match apparently regarding it as something he could take on and then change it so soon.

Cheers, JimBob, although tbf you wondered about Moriarty. Surprised by him being left out given how well he did on debut plus you would expect Essex -with Harmer in their side - to have made sure there's something in the track for spinners.

Re: SURREY VS ESSEX BOB WILLIS TROPHY
Followed England today but seems to have been a tidy performance by Surrey and better than I expected. Clarke's figures particularly caught my eye - only the one wicket but kept it very dry conceding just 24 off 18 overs.
One grumble. We gifted Essex 22 runs through 11 no balls. 5 of those from Atkinson and 4 from Virdi who bowls far too many for a slowie. If this turns out to be a tight low scoring game, I'll be seriously grumpy!

Good to see the surrey admin on twitter has a sense of humour, describing Rocky's innings as a long battling innings

Yeah, and it started so well! Absolute cracker of a delivery from Clarke to get Beard caught behind first up.
In trouble now but there could be fun if Jacks and Evans bat together for any time. Neither exactly specialise in the forward defensive push.

91/4.
As well as Jacks' 50, Evans has gone to 20 off 23. Could do with these two batting past tea.

Tea 136/5.
Maddeningly Jacks out for 70 shortly before the break to Harmer. Evans going well on 41.

187 all out. Deficit of about 75. Harmer ends with a sixfer.
Gives Essex a tricky 4 overs tonight. Last week in Essex's second dig, Sir Cowardy Cook opted out and used a nightwatchman.

No nightwatchman for Cooky. He was obviously more scared of the Kent bowlers (think it was Kent) than ours!

Re: SURREY VS ESSEX BOB WILLIS TROPHY
I thought Virdi had Cook lbw in the final over but not given. Essex reach the close on 13/0 and comfortably on top.
It probably wouldn't have made a difference to the eventual outcome but the decision to drop Moriarty seems all the more strange with the track taking increasing turn. Apart from Virdi, Surrey's attack seems very samey and not best suited for Chelmsford.

Re: SURREY VS ESSEX BOB WILLIS TROPHY
Essex 120/3 at lunch, leading by 195. Wickets shared around but Clarke hasn't bowled. Haven't listed to comms so unsure why.
I would reckon Essex will be looking to set us a target of at least 320 and then declare putting us in for some of the last session. Quite how many and quite how long we'll have to bat today probably just depends on how quickly Essex lose wickets and how greedy they are for runs.
Looking very tricky for us already ,,,,

Yeah. Tbf Harmer is a class act with experience to back him up but we sure could do with another frontline spinner alongside Virdi. At least Jacks doesn't send one rank long hop down every over like Borthwick.
Watched a bit this afternoon. Thought Finch put in a decent shift and has deserved his 2 wickets.
Essex 187/5 when I last looked. Meaning 262 ahead and us needing the highest innings score to win ...

Essex 201/5 at tea, a lead of 276.
They seem to have batted well. Not going wham bam crazy which would have probably resulted in the loss of quick wickets but steadily piling on the runs and keeping us out there getting more and more hot and knackered.
Just a question now of how long they prolong it for. Maybe an hour and give us about 14 overs tonight.

Essex's lead now beyond 320. Their batting job done.
Just make us suffer a bit more and then put us in. They've played us like a fiddle so far.

Re: SURREY VS ESSEX BOB WILLIS TROPHY
261 all out, giving us an unlikely target of 337.
Fourfers for Virdi and Finch. Fair enough, they both stuck at it and were tidier than most. Only 5 overs today from Clarke suggesting either an injury or Surrey knew the game was already gone.
A shedload of double figure scores from the Essex batsmen and a few 30s and 40s but no one reached 50. Normally, I would be unimpressed that no one went on but today they combined to do exactly what their team needed. Nothing stupid but pushing on and steadily increasing what was already a good lead.
16 overs to bat tonight ... hmmm.

Harmer stating his first few overs of the day beautifully (from an Essex perspective) - accurate, getting turn and varying bounce of the ball. Furthermore, he's just sent down a maiden to Patel in about 90 seconds. At that rate and with him staying on at one end for most of the time, there would be capacity for Essex to bowl more than 90 in the day in the unlikely event of that being required.
Porter bowling well in partnership with him. Patel and Borthwick battling and hanging on but neither looking too secure ....
