2021 England v NZ / World Test Championship Final Tipping Competition
First topic message reminder :
2021 England v NZ / World Test Championship Final
Tipping Competition Rules:
1.
Pick 2 (two) batsmen and 2 (two) bowlers from both England and New Zealand (India and NZ for the WTC Final) whom you think will score the most runs and take the most wickets. You get both batting and bowling points per innings so a bowler who scores runs has both batting and bowling scores added together.
e.g.
Conway, Williamson, Jamieson, Wagner
Sibley, Root, Broad, Anderson
2.
Pick 1 (one) fielder from each team; excluding wicket keepers for most catches in the Series.
It can be a bowler (for c&b) if you want.
e.g.
Taylor, Pope
3.
Select which wicket keeper will take the greatest number of catches, stumpings and run outs combined for each Test.
If a wicket keeper is injured then the replacement keeper's figures shall be used.
e.g.
Bracey or Watling... or "the same" amount of dismissals.
4.
Predict the Toss:
a) Who wins the toss?
e.g.
New Zealand
b) Winning captain's decision - bat or field?
e.g.
Bat
5.
a) Predict the Test result. 150 points for WTC Final.
e.g.
New Zealand
Selections must be posted a minimum one (1) hour before the commencement of play. No PM reminders shall be sent.
Scoring:
1.
1 point for every run scored by your nominated batsmen. Add together for each Test.
Bonus 20 points for 100 runs.
extra 25 points for 150 runs.
extra 40 points for 200 runs.
extra 50 points for 250 runs.
extra 60 bonus points for 300+ runs.
Note: the batting & bowling score bonuses accumulate so;
Batting:
100 runs = 120 points. A player scores 127 + 20 = 147 points.
150 runs = 195 points. A player scores 176 + 20 + 25 = 221 points.
200 runs = 285 points. A player scores 243 + 20 + 25 + 40 = 328 points.
250 runs = 385 points. A player scores 282 + 20 + 25 + 40 + 50 = 417 points
300+ runs = 445 points. A player scores 309 + 20 + 25 + 40 + 50 + 60 = 504 points.
Bowling:
20 points per wicket with a bonus 50 points for a 5-fer.
An extra 35 points for 6-fer, 40 for 7-fer, 45 for 8-fer, 50 for 9-fer.
An extra 100 bonus points for a 10-fer.
5 wickets = 100 + 50 = 150 points
6 wickets = 120 + 50 + 35 = 205 points.
7 wickets = 140 + 50 + 35 + 40 = 265 points
8 wickets = 160 + 50 + 35 + 40 + 45 = 330 points
9 wickets = 180 + 50 + 35 + 40 + 45 + 50 = 400 points
10 wickets = 200 + 50 + 35 + 40 + 45 + 50 + 100 = 520 points
Caught and bowled = 20 points for the wicket + 25 bonus points for the catch = 45 points.
2.
Fielder catches: Your nominated fieldsmen earn you 25 points per catch and 25 points for a run out.
3.
Wicket keepers: 50 points for correct selection. e,g. - Bracey or Watling.
Or if you think they will take the same number of total dismissals per innings - then nominate "the same" = 50 points.
If they take the same number of catches and stumpings (combined) and you've picked either one of the keepers - then 25 points only.
4.
a) Correctly predict who wins the toss = 15 points
b) Correctly predict what the winning Captain decides to do = 15 points - only for those with part a) above correct; no points if your a) was incorrect.
5.
a) Correctly predict the winning team for each Test = 100 points. (1st Test 50 points)
b) If you guess both Test Match outcomes correctly then there is a further 100 point bonus = 250 points.
Note: Correctly predict a "Draw" = 100 points
c) Bonus points for WTC Final = 150 points
If one (or more) of your selected players gets injured during a match or is dropped from the Test side after a match, then you’ll have the opportunity to select replacement players – either as it happens - for the injured player or before the next Test commences (for a player who gets dropped). Doesn’t have to be the actual substitute player – it can be somebody else already in the team. However, you don’t receive any of their previous points – you must start accumulating points from scratch with them.

Olly and James - the toss and captain's decision?
Duty - assuming if NZ win toss - they bat... no brainer, huh?
Also remember this one is worth 100 points for win /draw correct pick.
Cheers Guildford.
Cloudier today, Joey. Possibly think about it and then bat.

Golly Olly... it never ends!
So is it very overcast around Birmingham at the moment? You think bowl first may be a good option?
Coldest day here in 37 years years so nothing would surprise me when it comes to the weather around the globe.
So just awaiting Alfie, JD, KP_F and KC.

Cheers JD!
Given the latest team news as per Olly's post above: assuming "Watling" = Blundell.
Let me know of you want to change your selection - there's still time.

I can select his for him. England to win or NZ to win. Possibly a draw. Maybe even a tied game.
Any of the top 7 of either team for runs scored and bowlers will be Broad, Jimmy, Stone or Wood. NZ will be Boult, Henry, Wagner or the spinner.
It will either be a flat pitch or a green top, depending on how the first day goes.
India will definitely win though. They will probably win the Euro Championship as well.

Hi again Joey - just to confirm, I'll stick with the NZ keeper taking the most snaffles and so will replace Watling with Blundell. Trust fine. Thanks again for doing all this.

Nothing too tricky for me... re batsmen/bowler/all-rounder combinations though!

Is there a formula that allows me to score higher after making terrible predictions?
I feel like 4th bottom must be about my best performance in these so far. Given the amount of time I while away watching cricket I am depressingly bad at this.

ha ha! I wish.
I'm the same. Brilliant (once) when out on the actual field... but hopeless in a quickly cobbled together cyber-competition.
I still can't work out why on earth I've backed NZ (with 6 team changes) and not England... who look surprisingly settled (to the blindfolded naked eye) with only one change. What the hell was I thinking?
I mean... look at Tino up there alone at the top. Just who does he think he is? Bloody Sir Edmund "Handmade Teddy bear" Hillary?

Hi Carlos - whatever countries are playing, always try to pick Cummins & Starc! Can't go wrong with that formula, eh Joey?

Oops... sorry dear chap. I must have been rushing it this morning. Corrected for you now.
btw... I watched a bit of the T20 Blast derby v Middlesex the other day. Are you going to the return bout at the Oval or do you only go to the white ball stuff? Looks like a fun day out. The sun never seems to set.. especially if you're a Surrey fan!
Also, my sincere apologies to James for getting his hopes up... prematurely.

I'll bear it in mind. However, it will have to be authorised by a majority of members in Tino's Seamstress Guild. That might prove difficult.

Hi Joey - my membership includes all formats - cracking value imo, about £200 for all Surrey home matches in the season plus some free guest tickets and early dibs for England games at the Oval. You can specify particular format(s) only but it's peanuts to add to the County Championship which is the gold standard for me and the format I most want to watch. Apologies for the advert!
In previous seasons, I often haven't bothered with the t20s. I don't dislike it but it is my least favourite format. Also, being a cheapskate, if I'm going up to London I prefer to see more than 40 overs. Travelling to games actually costs me more each season than my membership! However, having been starved of watching cricket at the ground last year, I'm planning to go to a couple of t20s this coming week.

Great deal... so much on offer. (Sorry, meant red ball; not white.)
Similar thoughts on T20. I can watch it no problem but have only been to one game... about 5 years back. Looking forward to the Ashes later this year and early next. Will most likely go on Day 2 or 4 (Thursday 6th January or Saturday the 8th, 2022) as I try to avoid the pink day - not that I'm against the cause. Just hate dressing up and wearing a colour I've never worn before.

Notes:
Congratulations to James on finishing top of the table after edging out Tino on the final day. He correctly picked the winner and the most wicket keeper dismissals along with myself; whilst Alfie and Duty also picked the correct winner in New Zealand.
There was a late surge from Duty who rose from 11th to 8th on the final day to end up on 1167 points.
Interestingly, both King Carlos and KP_Fan finished on the same score of 1156 points.
Thank you all for your quick responses at the start of this short series and your kind diligence in getting all your picks in during the short turn around between matches. I really appreciate it - makes things a lot easier for me.
Only 5 days to go until the World Test Championship Final. It should be a great contest. I'm really looking forward to it.
Please keep an eye on this thread (from about Thursday onward) and post your picks as soon as there is any news about the team lineups.
I'm thinking we go the full hog and allocate a mighty 150 points for picking the correct winner in such an important match. What do you think?
