Ireland v Scotland, Dublin, 6Ns 2024 Round 5
First topic message reminder :
Ireland have a great chance to take the title and redeem themselves against Scotland at home on St Paddy's weekend.
Scotland can try to redeem themselves... Guess we're back to where we're happiest, the dark horse underdog extraordinaire. Maybe without the dark horse tag.
Stats
Bookies say 1/10 for an Ireland win 6/1 for a Scotland upset.
Last Scotland win was 2017 at Murrayfield under Vern Cotter 27-22.
Last 8 encounters Ireland have won, the biggest margin in the 2019 WC where Ireland won 27-3, the average difference being 17 points.
Last Dublin encounter Ireland won 26-5 in 2022.
Ireland just basically have to win to win the title.
Scotland will be chasing the triple crown but a title is far less likely, with best case scenario possibly second.
Prediction
Mine will be a professional Irish win against a somewhat improved but typically limited Scotland performance. They are at least 17 points better, and none of the evidence from this year points to anything other than a continued run of form against Scotland. The points difference depends on the Scottish bench selection and use.
36-12
Townsend to finally call it quits (I hope).

What a time to throw a ridiculous offload. All that hard work wasted in a nano second. Now yellow, inevitable Ireland try and that’s the game.

We need change. This is literally a carbon copy of every other Ireland performance. Try to hold them back and hope for the best. No territory game.
Toonie will cite improvement and we'll be stuck with him for another 2 years, with an extension to the 2027 WC.

Congrats Ireland, bad luck Scotland, some great defence but too many unforced errors gave Ireland field position and added to some dubious officiating at times ...

Ireland play another 5/10 performance but get away with it this time. Mental fragility needs sorting, they're better than the last 2 weeks.

Made hard work of that. Some poor decision making and a lot of handling errors.
Great defence from Scotland. Fair play to them. If they could of attacked more in that second half they may well have won.

Re: Ireland v Scotland, Dublin, 6Ns 2024 Round 5
What a strange game. Utterly heroic defence (the best I've seen in a long time) but couldn't get out our half. Several very dodgy decisions not least the try that was given when the ref must have x-ray vision, and the shocker of a penalty against Cummings. In part these penalties and our stupidity (Kinghorn) just meant we couldn't change the momentum or get out our half.
Well done Ireland - the stats were hugely on their side and it's only because of our defence that it wasn't a bigger score.
Very proud of the Scotland performance and still a huge amount of frustration in what we've done.

Well done Ireland! A very tough team to beat. Another deserved Six Nations title.
Great defence from Scotland but ultimately, unforced errors and ill discipline once again costly. A tournament of constant what ifs from start to finish.

Re: Ireland v Scotland, Dublin, 6Ns 2024 Round 5
Objectively, the defence was the only good thing about our performance. It feels very much like a rinse repeat of the last 8 performances, except we held the defence longer because Ireland's attack was so poor. We didn't attack, we didn't play for any territory, we fluffed every opportunity.
Highlights Christie is a nailed on starter and McDowall is a legitimate alternative to tuipolotu.
Sutherland is past it. We need an alternative urgently. He actually made Tiffany look good.
For me a 5.5/10 (5/5 for defence, 0.5/5 for attack) performance against a 6/10 Ireland. Better than last week but that's not hard.

I was on a flight so couldn't watch this and I'm glad I didn't.
Well done to Ireland - back to back wins is a huge achievement and should be reflected upon as such.
Reading text highlights on BBC was brutal for a Scotland fan. Sounds like we did absolutely nothing at all, had no possession and Christie tackled the entire Ireland team single handed.

I feel that Redpath brought a lot more to the team when he came on. Not just holding up the Irish try but made some good breaks and shipped the ball well

There is no excuse for professionals being so overwhelmed that they can't execute basic skills.
I'm sorry but this is a coachable issue.
