Bench Press record!
Possibly my favorite excercise, and it seems to be the one everyone asks you about.
So what is your personal best, mine is 105Kg on a machine and 90 kg free weight!

Re: Bench Press record!
Been so long since I did them mate...as I found dumbbells worked the spot better......
If it's of any interst....
I can shift 5 reps of 110 pound dumbbells on the incline press...
won't go less than 5 on anything..

Re: Bench Press record!
I usually go up to about 105kg on free weight for my last set of 10, can't really manage higher than that (not interested in 1 rep max etc). I don't really go for size, more definition.

So why are you guys posting on a thread that's asked for a PB when you don't have one

1 rep max.....They are for silly people that want to get injured..
Even amateur types no better than to do them....
My guess is the guy doesn't train at all.
someone messing about.

I'm in agreement with Truss...really don't see the benefit of pushing out 1 rep, and generally when people do that they end up arching their back through the strain...fast track to a pretty bad injury.
Re: Bench Press record!
1 rep max's are for Weight Lifters and this is a 'Weight Lifting' forum.

Lightsout, don't get into the 'this is weightlifting, not bodybuilding' routine that plagued the old 606 weights forum. This is a forum for people interested in both, and therefore the opinions of both should be respected.

Here here..after all without bodybuilders he'd be talking to himself...

Funny thing is one leads to the other....
I can lift 400+ on the deads for 10 reps or I could...
Not interested in impressing people that aren't interested...
Interested in what works for me....higher reps work better than low..

Yeah the whole motto of going to the gym should just be to do what works for you. Doesn't matter what the huge, ripped guy in the corner is doing, just do what gets you results. High reps for me, also.
Re: Bench Press record!
Truss I'm not going to lie it is quite confusing having all the weight in pounds!

Cheers Truss, I was more shocked at the 400 for deadlifts though.

Re: Bench Press record!
You guys are so defensive, this is a forum, everyone is allowed their point of view and mine is that weight matters more than anything else and that everything else follows, if you use correct form then getting injured is unlikely as long as you've warmed up first hence more then 2 or 3 sets. That's the way I train and have made most gains, I've tried higher reps/ lower weights, yes this gets you pumped but the in my experience the gains aren't there. I actually warm down with a couple of 12 rep sets from a 1/2 rep max. When you say 'works' what are you trying to achieve doing heavier weights is proven to put the body under more stress and thus force the body to adjust to a greater degree, very simple, unless all you guys are not training to get bigger or anything and already have the exact body size and look you're after and are just training for fitness and tone.

Good stats mate. My arms are at about 15 1/2, not sure about current chest measurement. Trying to just maintain where I'm at, like the lean look at the moment.
Good to hear that age is no barrier, and that the metabolism slowing down doesn't affect results as long as you do what is right for you and eat well.

Re: Bench Press record!
That is the single reason that I hate going to the gym, people who go there and do one rep at ridiculous weights for each body part. What is that seriously going to do for apart from give you a serious injury?
I am not really one for lifting with the arm, always struggled with upper arm strength. On the other hand, I can lift a fair weight with the old legs!
When I was hitting the weights regularly I could lift about 65kg.

The older you get..the more you learn about your body...
execises that work for you, the reps, rep speed, time between sets..
Never stop learning and the older you get...generally the wiser..
more to come for you fisty I'm sure..

Re: Bench Press record!
I agree Steve, generally 8-12 reps on a sensible weight do the trick, for me at least. I do 3 or 4 sets, and slightly increase the weight per set, with the odd drop set thrown in.
Yep Truss, plenty of wisdom still to be gained. What I'm doing at the moment is getting results though, so will stick with it until I feel it needs revising.

Yeah, I am the same mate. Definitely better to keep the weight lower but do a decent number of reps. I take it you are more interested in toning rather than building?
I have a mate that just builds all the time and he looks ridiculous!

I build up to a 1 rep max with 4/5 sets and do a couple of higher rep warm down sets so infact there is alot of exercise there.

Yeah I don't see the point in size if it isn't toned size...like i said above, im approx 12 stone 3 (170lbs ish) and 6ft tall, and to me that is fine in terms of lean muscle etc.

Shouldn't worry about Windy mate, he knows that you like a good tear-up of an argument now and again, and Windy can trade insults with the best of them when he gets going. He knows it's nothing personal, and I also reckon he enjoys it now and then!
The only real issue is with personal insults, as long as you keep it clean the majority will give you relatively free reign, maybe with the odd calming words here and there.

You guys keep telling yourselves you're looking good, loads and loads of back slapping going on here, 12 Stone and 6ft is under weight even for an average man who doesn't go to the gym...I can remember coming back from a year or so in India/Nepal/Tibet and weighing around 12 stone after months of trekking etc in the Himalayas, I'm 6ft and it wasn't a good look ... my own brother who'd come to pick me up at the airport didn't recognise me at first ....way too skinny.... where is the muscle lean or not.

Mate...why do you feel the need to put everybody who contributes on this thread down....
Zane used to compete at at 12 st 12......and sometimes less.....fisty is 12'6''.
Different people can look big or small at a certain weight....depends on the composition of the body..it's structure etc....
Myself at 15 stone I like...I don't look like a sorry-assed slob of a weightlifter.. and look I think pretty classy...
If fisty is happy he is happy...But perhaps you're not!! considering you are so full of negativity to others on here..

Re: Bench Press record!
Zane was 5'9" and not 6Ft but anyway maybe you're right, there doesn't seem to be alot of energy on this forum, everyone seems to have the body they always dreamed of and doesn't have any goals set for themselves, I'm the reverse I'm not the sort of person who can go into something and not continue to challenge himself on a continuous basis, I suppose as well I'm one of those guys who thinks that size matters and of course in the world we live in it does.....I wouldn't run me down for it....whats wrong with not being happy with what you have....I used to live in a 3 bed semi and wasn't happy with it although people used to say it was a lovely house.....I now live in a 6 bed detached and people are less forth coming and why is this .....pure jealousy ...I've got what they'd love to have.....same with the body...I put myself through alot of stress with my workouts and don't take any prisoners so as to speak..... if you want to work in with me do my weights I'm not taking off plates for you so you can work in. I don't care .... you can be 18st and be in good proportion, people at work don't come up to me and say 'slob' blah blah blah ....they just look but they're not going to say anything are they and neither are people in general ....I've got it.... the sort of body that says I'm more powerful than you....yes you can't see my abs in every detail but you're not going to upset me and say anything. And you can say what you want on a basic level it's been proven men size up each other in the first few seconds of meeting, women size up men in the first few seconds of meeting, it's genetically hard wired into us all. So size counts full stop and you guys should stop fooling around and get big, it feels great. And when you get old you can always size down a bit like I plan to.

Anyone would think that you own this forum Truss, you've got very thin skin and seem to beable to find insult when there's none there, calm down a little and have a laugh at some of my comments instead of going loopy. I've already said you're cool, I want to promote the heavier weights and size on this forum as inspiration to those who want to aim at the 200kg bench press, 250kg squat etc and have a long way to go, keep slamming on the on plates and get some personal goals with the weights you want to master, what's wrong with that everything else will follow ie size/strength etd.

What absolute piffle you have just written.
12 st 6 lbs for a man of 6ft in height is a very athletic build, allowing muscle definition to show whilst also allowing for some size. Sounds to me like you are just another fat weightlifter...grossly overweight, strong - yes, but obese also.
I'm not about to enter any Mr Olympia contests, but I look in good shape.
Re: Bench Press record!
Actually funny you saying that...... according to NHS guidelines I am obese but I just can't see it ...... along with my feet as obviously my belly's sooooooooooo big. I'm as I've said a few times advocating weight and size for those out there who are strength training in order to get as strong as they can bar the juice that is, instead of those who are just training for fitness, I'm 6ft and can remember when I was 12 1/2st and was way too skinny to the point where I'd get comments on it but maybe we have totally different builds however I'd put my build as medium at most.

Actually, a friend of mine is the same height, same weight but looks really skinny and you can tell he has never seen a gym in his life. I do wonder how we can weigh the same despite me appearing much bigger. Huge dong maybe?

Different body types look bigger or smaller at the same weight...
If you are 14 stone with wide shoulders your chest probably looks smaller than a 14 stoner with no shoulders....etc....
You can have bigger legs etc.....
so look smaller from the waist up.......
