Rob Howley to the Blues?
Following on from the speculation about Dai Young moving to Wasp, it would appear that in contrast to the WM, the DM have come out supporting the rumour and suggesting that it will be announced on Thursday.
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/rugbyunion/article-2006409/London-Wasps-unveil-Dai-Young-director-rugby.html?ito=feeds-newsxml
However, its the last paragraph thats new...
"Wales attack coach Rob Howley is among the early favourites to take over the Blues after the World Cup."
What do people think?

Re: Rob Howley to the Blues?
Good choice, Robert Howley could benefit from coaching the Blues, though I think the Blues should go for Mike Rayer of Bedford.

Well, Burnell and Phil Davies are other possible candidates, as well as the Ponty duo.

Good news for Wales a change of personnel will be beneficial in bringing in new ideas if we get the right person for the job.

Re: Rob Howley to the Blues?
Is Howley ready for the top job? I have always said it was to early for Young when he was brought in.
Even as a Gwent boy would still ove to see Kingsley back in Wales.
Would the Blues maybe go for a bigger name or established coach as director then bring in the likes of Howley/Rayer etc to work underneath them.

Re: Rob Howley to the Blues?
I don't think Howley would do a good job personally, I've not been impressed with him in the Welsh set up at all. Reckon Kingsley would be a much better choice.

Rayer left the Blues coaching set up in 2005 to become head coach at Bedford that was 6 years ago, he's ready to come home now. Often Bedford finish in the Top 4 places (2nd last year) in the second division and that's without the budgets that other clubs in the division have. While the vast majority of their players are English so it's not as if he has the advantages clubs like Worcester, Bristol, Cornish Pirates or London Welsh have in terms of finances.

Re: Rob Howley to the Blues?
People forget that Howley was blues attack/skills coach for a few years and was responsible for turning our backline into a pretty mean weapon. Which laid the foundations for when Bill Millard was with us.

I think that MR would be the better choice however I still doubt dai will be at wasps. There seems to have been a great deal of swivelling on his part as to his position on the issue.
wow that last sentence could be misconstrued

Re: Rob Howley to the Blues?
Well both ESPN and BBC 5Live have tweeted today that the deal is being signed today and announced within 2 days.
Re: Rob Howley to the Blues?
Blimey. I do not want Burnell as head coach, what a dreadful decision.
If Peter Thomas & Co don't bring in a decent replacement and just promote him...then we're doomed. He's totally out of his depth at this level and he only coaches the forwards - who have been so dire this season even though they are the same pack that we won the Amlin with.

Re: Rob Howley to the Blues?
well, finally some direct answers! thanks
just hoping that he doesn't have a slow start as he did for cardiff the prem needs competition and would suffer if wasps deteriorate more

Re: Rob Howley to the Blues?
I think Cardiff could do with the money that is used to buy Young out of his contract. It's no secret that they're not made of money. I would like to see Tom Shanklin get the job.

Re: Rob Howley to the Blues?
I think they could well appoint howley as they won't have money to splash on an experienced coach. It's gonna be a tough old job. No money to spend, an ageing team and more NWQ than any other region. I think if young goes he's not left the blues in great shape. Also what experienced coach would rake on such a tough role with high expectations?
Would Paul turner turn to the dark side? I know he drinks in the Cardiff rugby club on international days!

Re: Rob Howley to the Blues?
Great news for Wales, if Dai goes the sooner Howley goes to the Blues the better, he has done nothing for Wales attack. I suspect it could be a good move for Howley as I suspect the coaching team may be out of a job after the RWC.

Re: Rob Howley to the Blues?
I think the problem for Wales is that he's not going before the world cup
Wales have been pretty dire in attack since 2008 after which his single game plan was figured out by everyone!

Re: Rob Howley to the Blues?
Huw pretty sure it was figured out in 2008 as well. It was defense that really won them that.
Re: Rob Howley to the Blues?
It's a shame it all didn't happen a few months ago and we could have tried to get a coach with vision in... somebody like Jiffy
He always seems to know everything about everything - wouldn't it be nice to see if if it was just B**locks he was talking all the time?

Re: Rob Howley to the Blues?
Burnell has come through the ranks at the Blues, and started coaching at grass roots level. He's always been a Head Coach up until joining the Blues as Forwards Coach. Maybe he's not been 'allowed' to develop under Dai. He's not a bad bet - produced a load of the current players whist the Academy Manager and is big on development - what the Blues really need to be thinking about right now.
