The American Trials!
You would think that the americans would want their best 100m runner in the World Championship. By having trials in which you have to finish in the top three you give the possibility that injuries/illness can really mess you up. Wouldn't it be better if the fastest american over the year got a bye?

It has always seemed insane to em to have no leeway. As well as illness you also have the effect taht for some events an athlete needs to peak to make the team, not peak at the championship they are qualifying for.
