Off-field heroics

I just spotted this story in the kiwi papers, Highlanders skipper Jamie Mackintosh performed the Heimlich manoever to save a women choking on steak. So I figured I'd open up a topic for people to put up stories on occasions where top players have gone above and beyond the call of duty.

Note this isn't an article to discuss the "heroic" in the ironic sense of the word for the drunken exploits of the Mike Phillips, Quade Coopers or Doug Howletts of the world

Gareth Delve sorted out a bloke who was beating up a girl in Melbourne earlier this year.

There was a good clip on rugbydump showing chris jack breaking up a fight between some guys in the street. pretty funny just watching him brush normal sized people aside.

This isn't just one act of heroics but Jonathan Edwards, no7 at the Scarlets is a fireman, so I guess you could say he's regularly saving lives!

Seriously though, hats off to Richard Parks, and I agree, credit to Ben Cohen for taking on a challenging role.

Blair Swannell. Twice a British Lions tourist (1899 & 1904) and capped in all four Tests in 1904, this rugged Northampton forward emigrated to Australia immediately after that tour and was capped by his new country within 12 months on a tour to New Zealand in 1905. He died leading a ferocious charge by Australian forces at Gallipoli in August 1915, he was shot whilst kneeling showing others how to aim better. He was awarded the military cross. It has been estimated that 5,000 Australian rugby players ultimately went on active war service between 1914 and 1918. This figure represents about 98 per cent of the playing numbers in the game, outside of the schools, in 1914. Many of these players never returned to Australia.

As does this chap....

Marcel Burgun. An extrovert fly-half who played against England in 1914, during the last international before hostilities began. Joined the French Air Corps to avenge his brother's death on the western front and was shot down and killed in 1916.

And for good measure, Dave Gallaher. Fought in the Boer war, captained the 1905 All Blacks, lied about his age in order to join up with the ANZACs (he was over 40 by 1914), killed at Paschendale.

Douglas Bader was tipped as a future England fly-half before losing his legs.

Tana Umaga stopped to make sure Colin Charvis didn´t choke on his own tongue after he was laid out in a big tackle. And before you mention it, I think he and saint Kev should´ve been punished for their involvement in BOD´s injury.

Donncha O'Callaghan spent a week in Haiti last year as part of his job as a Unicef goodwill ambassador.

My mum stopped in a petrol station in Pontypridd when it was hammering down with rain, and he filled up her car so she didn't get wet, he even queued at the till for her.

Just did a quick search online and I was amazed how many injured rugby players donated their organs.
They may not be household names but their sacrifice saved or improved many peoples lives.

Who? Was this around 32 years ago?

In the film Old Scores, Glyndwr got "Old Lucky" on the field so just after the All Blacks got a try, Old Lucky landed on the cross bar during the converstion and popped, so the match was a draw.

Who was the huge Canadian (might have been USA) international lock playing for a london club who battered some mouthy gits who were intimidating passengers on a tube train and smoking shortly after the King's Cross fire and subsequent ban?

I seem to remember reading eye witness accounts to him banging the miscreant's heads on the ceiling of the carriage two at a time!

As good as the Tana Umaga act was, the key here is OFF field. Unless Charvo got sparked out by JC after the game too?
