Is anyone watching the Gentlemen's Invitational Doubles currently on one of the BBC Internet Streams just now featuring a certain Mr Andrew Castle who was Britain's great hope of doing well at Wimbledon in the 1980's. What are people's thoughts on Andrew Castle's ability as a tennis player back then. I do believe that in 1985 he came very close to pulling off a major shock by beating one of the top players in the world at that time in Sweden's Mats Wilander. Does anyone know what Andrew's best performance was at Wimbledon and in what year.

Try this too http://www.atpworldtour.com/Tennis/Players/Ca/A/Andrew-Castle.aspx?t=tf

He lost at his first Wimbledon to Wilander 2nd round in a 5-set match, 6-0 last set. This plucky loss made him briefly England's most recent GWH, subsequently to be taken over by Jeremy Bates, who I recall organised his wedding day for the 2nd Saturday of Wimbledon in the year he made the 4th round - that was self-belief!

What were Andrew Castle's key strengths as a tennis player during the 1980's and did he have any weapons which helped him get easy cheap points, or was he simply like a Caroline Wozniacki type of player, i.e. a player who just hits the ball back over the net and hopes that the opponent makes a mistake.

gbnut i was in Japan so missed the Castle bandwagon.

There is an article about his tennis exploits in the official Wimbledon programme this year (well they needed to fill it up with whatever they could find! Seriously though it looks at his opting to go to the States to study and play tennis before getting a wildcard into Wimbledon in 1986. There's even a photo of a rather young looking Mr. Castle and the obvious plug for all his media work both in and outside of tennis.

£8 for this is a bit steep though unless you're a die-hard castle fan - mind you most of the other articles weren't that great either!
