Captured Public Imagination Empty Captured Public Imagination

Post by huw Fri 01 Jul 2011, 9:53 am

There is a fairly big fight on the horizon, so I've heard!

I cannot remember any fights that have captured the public like this one. I'm used to being the one person in my office boring everyone else about boxing, asking if they saw so and so fight whilst they just want to talk football (only premier league / champions league mind you).

We actually have a sweepstake going on at work, everyone has an opinion.

I really cannot remember any other fights that have people this interested. Benn / Eubank may have been but I was at school then so didn't really see anything going on that didn't directly involve me.

I'm also becoming our office boxing expert - which judging by some of my posts views on here must at least make some of you guys sympathise with my colleagues!

Bizzare as it seems the Haye vs Valuev (spelling!) was a bigger deal in my office.

I think it was mainly due to Valuev's freakish look and size however.
Got very tired, very quick of the football crowd telling me Valuev couldn't be beat because he was so big!!!!!

Anyone I've mentioned this weeks fight to just gives me a blank dot eyed expression.

Sky's marketing power is huge, Sky news, Sky One, All Sky sports, they have been banging on about this fight on the hour every hour for weeks.

We all knew the Audley Harrison fight was a joke (most of us) - but it didnt stop Sky marketing it like it was the thrilla in manilla all over again.

Never underestimate the power of marketing! and skys marketing budget is huge.

It's a good thing though - Sky seem to have increased the size of their boxing budget - which can only be a good thing.

To be fair to him, some of what comes out of his mouth leaves me cold but Haye works his nuts off selling the fight as well. Does the rounds of chat shows and interviews as commitedly as any fighter I can remember. This can only help in selling the fight.

Agree Jeff. Even though he is a bit of a chopper, any publicity is good publicity.

I don't hink it's about marketing. It's been his strategy from the start to wind up Klitschko, make him angry and get him to fight not box.

And how did the average person and non boxing fans get exposure to that without it being in the papers and on TV?

It's a heavyweight unification bout. Whatever Haye said would have made the papers. The hand wrap comments, robot, decapitation and non shaking of the hand is all geared to upsetting Wlad.

Not to the extent that other fights get. It would have got a tad more publicity being a heavyweight unification bout but no where near what has been happening with this fight. Haye has the personality and sky are backing him with their wallets. Good really cos they did with Audley and we all know that was a stinker.

Like Jeff was saying - he has been doing interviews and other shows like 'David Vs..." on sky one. All backed by sky's money.

Me personally, i'm that excited i may well have a "Jim" moment from American Pie i.e. the white gravy without a single stroke

Sadly the absolute idiots i have to work with, notably one complete idiot who thinks he knows everything about everything, think Haye will win guaranteed. It's like working with a bunch of retards. Have just asked one of the mentally retarded ones who he thought would win between his older brother and Adamek to setup the big showdown and he didn't know Wlad had an older brother. Have just told him that he should probably keep his trap shut if he's going to comment on something he has sweet f.a. idea about in true boxing fan snobbery style.

Sadly it's huge news in the office. And if the dopey idiot to my left says "all he's gotta do is dodge the incoming punches and nail him he's won easily" i am going to smash my keyboard over his head.

Football oiks should be banned from watching or talking about boxing, preferably they should also be immune from knowing the sport even exists. Muppets.

I hate when people talk about the fight and over complicate things. It's so simple really as I just explained to the guy on my right, all Haye's gotta do is dodge the incoming punches and nail him he's won easily. I wonder why he's unplugging his keyboard.

I've never been this excited for a fight in my life even Hatton - Mayweather, of course being 19 I'm not quite old enough to remember much of Tyson - Lewis and other fights of that era live so technically speaking this is my first ever real big HW contest Very Happy

Coxy, I know the feeling mate. I've had a mate trying to tell me all week that Haye has taken clean heavy punches for fun from Valuev and no one is talking about his chin . His prediction anytime I say, "Wlad could end it with a clean straight right as well remember" is always "I dunno, Haye is fast and will dodge it all". The way a lot of people are talking they must think Wlad is going to stand with his hands by his sides with his chin held high with a target drawn on it. Shocked

Post by WHU_Champo_League_in_7Yrs Fri 01 Jul 2011, 8:34 pm

I'm 18 and this is the fight I have been most interested in so far in my lifetime. All this about haye selling the fight I've got to admit that wlad has played as big a part in selling this fight. Haye was mouthy before the fight was made, and in the last week, but he was quiet for a long time. Wlad has been strangely entertaining and has managed to give as good as he gets whereas other opponents e.g. Harrison were terrible in the build up with simple comments Luke "I'm going to knock you out"

They are complete opposites, haye is quick, small, brash, badmouthed whereas wlad is towering, classic heavyweight, humble and very respectful.

From a fans point of view I am annoyed but not surprised that the undercard is very weak. Haye-wlad could easily be over in 3 mins and £15 isn't much but you want at least one good undercard fights. They should really bring back world title fights on undercards like Vasquez vs arce on the pacquaio card

I think Hatton/Mayweather, Hatton/Pacquiao were both bigger. Haye will never, ever be as big as Hatton due to his distasteful comments, behaviour and arrogance, Hatton's fanbase and respect from the people absolutely puts his to shame.

Truss read this look how most posters think he is like

You call me obsessed, a stalker, etc. But then go and dig an article up i won't read it because i couldn't give a damn what anyone thinks of me, the fact of the matter is though i aint a WUM, you are, sugar boy hit the nail on the head earlier, when they brought you back the problems arose, your just a wind up who doesn't fool me. Saying i'm obsessed of you really is stupid and baffling, especially when we look at you bringing article links up laughing ...Been doing your homework on me again haha, how can i take you seriously when you say Mayweather's better than Ali, Leonard, Sugar Ray Robinson? how can i also take you seriously when you are so obsessively bias of 1 particular fighter ? mmm i can't. Your a wum, we all know it.

Guys, do you have to do this over the majority of threads on here?
Its spoiling the articles and becoming very silly now.
Please have some respect for the OP and keep the threads on topic instead of degenerating the articles into this.

Like I said before I dont think anyone takes you seriously on here...Predictable as always young towzer

My opinion is Floyd Mayweather is the greatest of all time so whats it got to do with you...You dont allow other posters opinions and your a keyboard warrior who tries to bully others into sharing the same opinion...You also have a disgusting attitude towards posters.

Should just dish out suspensions or something. It's getting tedious reading their bickering on every thread.
