Hopefully Mikey Phil will never again grace an online rugby forum. However, I would like to see the return of BloeJoggs, he made me laugh in a 'he really is pathetic' sort of way!!

emack2, stay calm and don't rise to the wums, if any come on here they will be dealt with, but I'm not aware of anyone having a go because of my age. Driving is a different matter altogether. But if it does bother you why not remove that part of your profile
I'm fairly certain it is possible.

I have a confession. On occasion on 606 I would wum. There was something about that site which encouraged it. Whereas here the setup discourages it. I think it's because of the internal moderation and administration. Time will tell. It's still relatively 'bijou' here.

Re: Will the WUMs spoil "Son of 606"?
One of my favourite pasttimes on 606 was to send out false information and see who would snag.
I particularly remember the "Gavin Henson is moving to Munster" which ended up really taking root but other ones that used be enjoyable was to post Irelands extended training squad on on the day it was announced and make a big talking point. Rory Best as captain was one, O'Driscoll dropped was another. And after the 2009 HEC semi final defeat to Leinster I said that 5 or 6 key Munster players had all announced their retirment.
Sadly the "pub regs" have copped onto that and there doesn't appear to be that many stupid people on this forum

Staggy - you could still catch out some people. Depends how convincing the lie would be; and don't discuss it elsewhere on here, just write an article on it.

Re: Will the WUMs spoil "Son of 606"?
Also whats the difference with a WUM and Devils advocate? If I am asked for what team I think England should put out and I intentionally tout Joe Simpson for #9 in order to create a talking point is that a WUM or being Devils Advocate?
Re: Will the WUMs spoil "Son of 606"?
that's more of a Devils Advocate for me Stag. A WUM for me is something that is deliberatly there to upset other posters, not just simply for debate. WUM's are usually a lot more insulting and personal too I find. Nothing wrong with a little bit of joking around, I think it can add to a forum, I mean we can't be serious all of the time!

Re: Will the WUMs spoil "Son of 606"?
The difference is in your intentions. Devils advocates test the strength of a debater, wums just want to irritate for the sake of it.

Re: Will the WUMs spoil "Son of 606"?
I'd say the difference is that a WUM is a comment/article which you've written to intentionally annoy people. You might include some derogatory phrase or insult in it, and it doesn't give any constructive opinion. Playing devil's advocate is just expressing a less popular opinion because you agree with it or because you want to look at something from another angle and you do so constructively.

Re: Will the WUMs spoil "Son of 606"?
Well Stag, a Devil's advocate picks flaws and takes contrary opinions, even if he or she doesn't agree with the position, for the sake of creating debate. It is not necessarily to wind someone up, but can be used to help someone make their argument watertight. With WUM on the other hand, the clue is in the title.
The term Devil's advocate comes from the Roman Catholic Church, where if someone was to be canonised, the Devil's advocate was a canon lawyer who would take a skeptical view and effectively argue against the canonisation. That way, in theory, only deserving candidates would be canonised.

So that's Glas a du and Red_stag that we now know HAVE to be watched!
A moderaters life is so hard.
As an aside I used to be convinced that Red_stag was based somewhere in Wales around the Carmarthen area

Re: Will the WUMs spoil "Son of 606"?
Isn't a WUM kind of like art? Hard to put into words, but we know it when we see it? Strange analogy, I know.
I didn't use the 606 boards until recently, but read it for quite a while. I enjoy good banter and have no problem when people light each other up, as long as in good fun. People cross the line, but that also happens in real life. I lean towards the side of tolerance, but when things move towards offending with purpose, I would agree its time people are offered a permanent vacation.
Let's hope for the best as we go forwards.

From some of the discussion on old 606 it appears the worst of the WUMS are leaning towards the (unmoderated apparently) JA606

That's exactly the way i see it too, for unadulterated, SENSIBLE rugby chat, then look no further than this forum.
red_stag..
Never ever doubted that, I'm also aware that you officiate at games too, when you get more proficient and get to do the big games look out for me when in wales.............I'm the one who ALWAYS calls the refs decisions.

Staggy - there's a woman from Carmarthen who's a massive Munster fan. Everytime there's a Munster game on S4C they interview her in the crowd. It's quite odd seeing a Munster fan speaking Welsh

I can't remember Glas. She lives in Wales, and she was at the last Munster game in Thomond shown on S4C.
Lucky - ha! She should be a Leinster fan then surely!

Ospreylian you do exaggerate - but she's blonde though.

When I was in Munich (2008) the two most popular teams were Munster and Clermont. I'm willing to bet that Leinster and Toulouse are the more popular ones now.

Counter intuitive I know, and trust me they are not local! But I haven't failed to spot one whilst driving through there yet. Stopping the car breaks the spell though and they disappear leaving only a trail of fairy dust.

Re: Will the WUMs spoil "Son of 606"?
Hmmm, talk about flaming. I daresay a lot of us got dragged into long running arguments over on 606. I remember one particular argument with a particularly obtuse poster - Steviegen who absolutely went out of his way do slag off the Scarlets and tried to put me down like some sort of village idiot. Got the better of him though. He said the Blues were better than the Scarlets because they had a "Rugby Charter." I didn't need to say much after that
Always a few around though who are just determined to rile you up, though I suppose you shouldn't rise to it. The worst though is Spidey Jones who posts on the Evening Post website. Has been noticeable only by his absence since the Ospreys stumbled over the line at Aironi!
