606v2 picks the Irish RWC squad: FLYHALVES
606v2 picks the Irish RWC squad: FLYHALVES
Morning all.
Hope everyone had a good weekend.
I have seen the Welsh and English have already started these kinda articles and it did seem like a good idea to try and have them all together.
So the series will determine who will be the Irish RWC squad according to the 606v2 community.
I will try and post up the next part of the series every weekday morning so we all have plenty of time to debate each position. Obviously everyone has their own opinions but try and keep a level head and back up your points with examples or clips or something.
I am going to go for a 16/14 split between the backs and forwards.
4 props
3 hookers
3 locks
6 backrow (1 able to play lock)
3 scrumhalves
2 flyhalves
3 centres (1 able to play flyhalf)
6 back 3
This is Kidney's 43 man squad.
http://www.irishrugby.ie/ireland/23313.php
So far the Squad is:
Healy, Ross, Buckley and Court
Best, Cronin and Flannery
O'Connell, O'Callaghan and Cullen
Heaslip, O'Brien, Ferris, Wallace, Jennings and Ryan
Reddan, Stringer and Murray
This is going to be a relatively easy one.
I am going to only allow 2 spots for outhalf as one of the centre's (guess who) will be 3rd option at outhalf.
Humphreys is included because DK said that players who were not in the 43 man squad due to injury may still make the plane, although less likely as they'd miss so much training and preperation.
Sexton- Great form over last few months. Attacks gain line and gets backs moving very well. Varys game well. Has good range of kicks and good distance and accuracy. Tackles better than many OH's and is a good game manager and goal kicker. A leader also.
O'Gara- Excellent goal kicking and game management. Experienced and a leader. Great passer but due to not attacking the gain line doesn't create as much space for his midfield as other OH's. Poor tackler.
Humphreys- Great broken field runner and can be very exciting. Goal kicking is of a high standard and has great distance. Poor defence and only average game management. Not really tested at international level.
Pick 2.
NB: Once this series is finished I will take our 30 man squad and go through the positions trying to establish who 606v2 thinks is Ireland's best XV.
NB: If the choice of OH appears mainly to be agreed upon I will post the one for centres later this afternoon, with the back 3 tomorrow.

No Problems here. both players will share the Jersey during the pool stages. Sexton to start against Aus and Paddy Wallace to get into the squad as a centre but will cover here in case there is an emergency

Straight forward really. Sexton first choice with O'Gara to see substantial game timea against Russia and the USA and might be used against the Aussies to try and close out the game.

Sexton and ROG, Sexton to start and to play the 80 min in the big games unless the game is over as contest.
If you want to open up international defences you need all 15 to offer an attacking threat and be able to exploit a half gap if it becomes available.

This really is the most boring of all the picks
sexton and o'gara please, rog to finish off the ozzies and maybe even seek out duncan mcrae.
Now lets move on to a juicy position like inside center
That will be a good auld chat. mcfadden v wallace
The ulstermen will be out in force for that one

Straight forward one really. I've gone for Sexton and ROG. Simply the best 2 outhalfs (halves?) we have.

Yeah this was always going to be an easy one really.
I think Sexton definitley is the one who needs to start the big games however due to his ability to run the ball and stay strong defensively.
O'Gara against a team like S.Africa would be very useful in terms of game management.
Centres will be up by 12 I'd imagine.

I have a feeling that the 1* voters are back in the way of disrupting polls like this they vote for the least likely option aka: Mick O'Driscoll

Yeah of all the votes on this topic i thought this is the one where it wouldnt matter that much, but also i like iHumph and he was only really thrown in here to make up the numbers, which was unfair to him and i thought he deserved better

I'm sure you will have plenty of time to belittle my opinions when we get into the backs and i demand that denis hickey be put down as a choice of winger and that luke fitzs bad form is nothing but a media led manhunt by the murdoch empire after they hacked his phone and overheard heard him describe how he was going to score a hattrick against the ozzies

What I'm really interested in is to see how close we were to selecting the 30 man squad once it's actually announced.
I think so far we've got it pretty much spot on (barring injuries, dramatic loss of form etc.) with the exception of scrumhalf where Murray will likely lose out to TOL. Still though, 29 out of 30 wouldn't be half bad at all.
The "debate" for No.10 was always going to be the tamest. Looking forward to the centres and back three ones though.
