Who should be England's 3rd choice scrum-half at the Rugby World Cup?
606v2 picks the England World Cup squad: 3rd scrum half
Martin Johnson World Cup training squad announcement a couple of weeks ago got us all talking about who should be there/shouldn't be there/should go to the World Cup/shouldn't go to the World Cup etc. Now that the heat has died down a little bit and the squad has had a bit of time to sink in, who do we think should make the final 30? Over the next few weeks I'll post a series of polls so that we can select a 30 man World Cup squad.
Current squad- as chosen by you:
Props: Dan Cole, Alex Corbisiero, Andrew Sheridan, Matt Stevens
Hookers: Dylan Hartley, Lee Mears, Steve Thompson
Locks: Louis Deacon, Courtney Lawes, Tom Palmer
Back row: Tom Croft, Nick Easter, James Haskell, Lewis Moody, Chris Robshaw, Tom Wood
Scrum halves: Danny Care, Ben Youngs
Fly halves: Toby Flood, Jonny Wilkinson
Centres: Shontayne Hape, Mike Tindall, Manu Tuilagi
Wings: Chris Ashton, Matt Banahan, Mark Cueto
Full backs: Ben Foden
The squad is shaping up nicely, with 11 backs picked from the core backs vote (as Cueto, Hape, Tindall and Tuilagi were all on 9 points, they all made it in). That leaves 3 squad spots left.
Every squad needs 3 players capable of playing 9. With 2 specialist 9s in the squad, we have the option of adding a 3rd specialist 9 or having Ben Foden (already in the squad as a full-back) covering 9 in case of an emergancy, which would leave space for another player (possibly an outside back). So today's vote is who is going to be that 3rd choice 9? Do we go with a specialist or risk it and let Foden cover?
Selection criteria: If Foden wins the vote, the squad will remain unchanged. If Simpson or Wigglesworth wins the vote, then they will be added to the squad. Multiple voting is not allowed.

Personally, I would take the specialist. If Foden is forced to play at 9, we are weaker both at 9 and at 15. I would much rather take a specialist 9 at the expense of an outside back and see Youngs at 9 and Simpson on the wing than Foden at 9, any winger from the training squad on the wing and Cueto/Armitage at full-back.

Simpson, he is better then the other two and Foden has enough on his plate being the only full back!

Simpson is too much like Youngs and Care. Wigglesworth is an AP winner. Played well in the AP final and is an experienced operator.
I don't expect Wigglesworth to be picked but would be nice to see the AP winners actually have some representatives in the England squad.

These polls have only been working off the back of Martin Johnson's training squad, which didn't include too many Sarries. We've got Stevens, Botha missed out and Wigglesworth looks set to miss out too. Hodgson (who wasn't an AP winner with Sarries, but won the competition in 2006) and Strettle could still make the squad, but there aren't all that many options in the training squad.
Had Barritt and/or Goode been in the training squad, I think they would have been picked by the 606v2 community.

robbo I am just annoyed that MJ cannot pick form players in England's biggest weakness - the centres. Anthony Allen and Brad Barritt.

I just don't think you can have your 3rd scrum half as a starter in another position. It would be a bit different if you had an Austin Healey as a scrum half/wing option in the squad but who wasn't likely to be in the starting 15. As we haven't I'll go for Simpson.
