P4P Top 5 with a twist?
There is a certain air of predictability when it comes to ATG P4P lists. While these lists are subjective they often contain the same familiar names. In fact the top few places for a lot of people are often set in stone with only the odd difference in placings here and there. The majority (not all) will agree that SRR is no.1 and that a top 5 should include Henry Armstrong and Harry Greb. A top 5 is usually dominated by Americans and not many would argue with the usual names that appear.
So to be slightly different and to generate debate I want you to pick your P4P top 5 minus the Americans. Its generally a bit harder to do and there is no clear cut definitive no.1 in my eyes. So who would occupy your top 5 and why? I want it to be difficult so keep it to a 5 please... If we get a decent response i'll add up the votes and post a top 5 list. Also no critcising or questioning anyone elses list unless you post your own list first.
1. Roberto Duran
2. Sam Langford
3. Bob Fitzsimmons
4. Eder Jofre
5. Carlos Monzon
Cheers!

Off to bed (work nights) so conveniently won't be able to defend myself or my list in the meantime..

Surely it's just an exercise in editing?

I personally have both Fitz and Sam above Duran, my reasons were gone through in depth on Chris' thread yesterday. Hard to argue with the top five though. Moving outside the top five would probably have to add McLarnin, depending where you stand on his nationality of course.

Thats assuming that everyone's actually sat down and made say a top 20 p4p list which is what you'd have to have done really to edit it down to a top 5 of non Americans really. Also as I said you often hear people debate who the best ever were and it inevitably boils down to a handful of Americans. I rarely hear ppl debating who was the best of the rest so was interested to hear it but each to their own..

Cheers for the lists. Can easily see why you'd have them above Duran, Jeff. Thats why I find it interesting. I dont think there is a stand out 1 and 2.

Appreciate the curiosity of the non-American aspect, but it seems to me little more than a case of the usual top whatever minus the tommy tanks.

Yeah, quite a simple concept but i guess that the thread starter will make a top 5 of everyone's non american list, and we can see who the majority think is the best non american, it's just quicker than going through everyone's top 25 and picking out the top 5 from each list

Thats all it was Balti but don't see what the problem is with that? As i said you rarely hear people debating the best of the rest an thought it was as worthy of a thread as other things that make there way on here. I think the non-American aspect makes the lists a bit more elastic. A top 5 is usually pretty rigid and ppl can agree but if your taking someones 7th, 11th, 14th, 18th and 21st theres gonna be more diversity in the order of their lists. Fair enough if you dont want to contribute.
